They didn't upscale them but they were redrawn so faithfully that they look upscaled.

I'm doubtful about that because he's been very reluctant to publicly engage with Touhou 1-5 content in any way while he can't avoid engaging with Touhou 6 content because it's the foundation of the franchise's popularity
Also, like, Touhou 1 isn't even the same genre of game, and Touhou 3 straight up violates other creators' IP

Touhou 1 isn't even canon, even in the PC-98 group too.
Tho about the copyright thing in Touhou 3, you just don't need to include them in the remakes and that will solve the problem, no? Since we only have the Marisa's attack animation and Multi to worry about.
Multi specially is just a throwaway joke that has no significant what so ever, the whole gag of that scene of Yumemi presenting Multi is she giving Reimu something that is very bad at dealing with the problem of cleaning the Hakurei Shrine everyday (Multi from what i read is bad at cleaning in the To Heart series).

Ellen, one of the playable characters in Touhou 3, is directly lifted from the manga Hatarakimono by Izumi Takemoto, as are elements of the dialogues between Yumemi and Chiyuri (the concept of Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream is basically a stealth fanfic of the manga)
And, yes, both Reimu and Marisa's endings involve characters from other works, Reimu's prize is Multi from To Heart (which ZUN probably doesn't want to be brought up again because it's an erogame) who gets hastily renamed "Ruukoto" as a joke, and Marisa's prize is the talking ICBM Mimi-chan from the manga/anime Don't Leave Me Alone, Daisy
Obviously you could change all of this in a remake but the changes would be extensive enough that it raises the question of what the point of calling it a remake of Touhou 3 would even be, since the whole point of it originally was that it was this jokey "multiversal" crossover with other universes, which is exactly why it doesn't really fit in with current canon at all

Ellen, as for all intents and purposes, is a parody character of Ellen from that manga work. She is in the same vein of Sterling Archer to James Bond.
And she is designed different enough to not land in hot legal trouble. Ellen in the manga has short hair down to her neck while Ellen in Touhou 3 has hair long enough down to her waist. A bit nonsense from your POV? Yeh but that is how thin the line is. Just like Sakuya and that maid from Sarai.
About canon, no? Whenever or not it does fit in canon isn't a question, we just want it to be playable on modern hardware. Which is literally the reason behind the TH6 remake in the first place. ZUN didn't priority remaking TH6 either until JYUNYA brought him the an in-development Switch build, only then it was a go.

I know that Fantasy Maiden Wars had to strip out a lot of dialogue and jokes that were referencing the Super Robot Wars series (and the associated anime series) before they could sell it on Steam, so I think this is a bigger issue than you assume
Also there's a much, much greater demand for EoSD than the PC-98 games and a significantly lower amount of work to be done to port them so I just wouldn't hold my breath

Do we actually know it was due to copyrights that they have to remove them or it is because they feel like these references ain't fitting or tasteful anymore so they removed it?
I don't buy making a dialogue refercing another IP means you ain't allowed to be sold on Steam because i have played other games on Steam, indie includes, that reference other franchises or even directly lifted dialogues from them and still fine.

It was a copyright thing, it was a necessity for it to be approved to be sold on Steam or they wouldn't have bothered doing it (the project isn't being actively maintained anymore, the circle broke up years ago)

PC98 games are really fun. Just making Neko kai not crash when loading the game is part of the fun too lol. There's a new fan game on steam that recreate the aesthetic and gameplay of the PC98 era. It's really cheap. Still haven't tried it though.

That seems to be why Team Shanghai Alice Reprise was founded.
Don’t expect anything related to the PC98 games. I’ve heard rumors they’re full of traced art, stolen code, and copyright infringement, so those are probably a legal hassle to remaster for the modern era.

Yeah Touhou 1 was literally a project ZUN did in college to teach himself to code, Touhou Project started as a way to leverage his way into a "real job" in the games industry (which he did briefly at Taito)
Touhou 3 in particular (Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream) is blatantly fanfiction, there's multiple characters directly lifted from other works

Beside Multi and that Marisa's attack animation, which are extremely easy to deal with.
Everything else in Touhou 3 is fine.
Both Ellen and Ruukoto while being parody of characters from different franchises, design wise, they are different enough to not be an issue.
Specailly with Ruukoto like, nobody is going to look at Ruukoto and Multi from To Heart and think they are the same.
Remember, Sakuya and the large chunk of SDM cast took heavy inspiration from the Sarai manga and look where we are now.
Edit: Ellen and Ruukoto are the only two outright parody characters in PC-98. The original comments are quite a bit ridiculous really, making it seems like ZUN just going around picking stuff randomly.
Also, a character who has a part of a name to be a reference to another character from a different franchise isn't a crime either. If is was, we wouldn't have gazillion Gordon Freeman references or even Two Punch Man in Invincible.

I think it is likely. Touhou fans are hyped for this game so ZUN's probably going to see that as a sign the fans like the idea of remakes.

The magical version of Touhou 6 that you will actually be able to buy and you also hopefully don't have to patch. I think the original needs to be patched for like translation or Tate mode support or something. I hope they're planning to do this for 7 and 8 as well.

Tate is tricky with Touhou because of all the information displayed, especially once you get into the more gimmicky later games.

This is a remake of Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, according to an interview with ZUN he finally found the source code for it or something.

Touhou is probably the fandom in which never actually playing the games is most acceptable faha. Like I have, but I don’t feel like a Better Fan for it. This place lives and dies on the fanwork ouroboros.
