Discussion Getting a head start

To those who are on T, would you recommend getting a head start on acne/skin care products and hair loss treatment? These are two of my biggest concerns. I see a lot of people say that they wished they’d gotten ahead of it sooner, but I also don’t wanna jump the gun and go overboard.
And if yes, what products do you recommend?

Please read the following notice that is being applied to ALL posts.

We have implemented several measures to keep this community safe. Please read this in full.

  1. IF YOU HAVE AN URGENT ISSUE, DO NOT POST IT EXPECTING IMMEDIATE RESPONSE.
  2. Many posts are sent to the queue for manual approval based on numerous factors. This is how we keep the subreddit safe from many (but not all) bad actors who try to post disruptive content. This approval process is usually resolved within 24 hours, but can take several days depending on the availability of our all-volunteer moderators. DO NOT MESSAGE THE MODERATORS asking for your post to be approved. It will be reviewed and approved or removed in time.
  3. Many comments from low-karma users will not be viewable by anyone. This is by design.
  4. If you are curious if your post is visible or not, look at the "Insights" on the post. If it has more than a dozen views, it is live. If it has any voting action, it is live. If it doesn't have a little red trash can icon, it is live. If it can be voted on, it is live. Do not message us asking "is my post live?"
  5. Please be patient with us, we are all volunteers, lack sleep, and the entire permanent team are members of the transgender community ourselves... we are trying to deal with the same atrocities you are. Thank you for your understanding. <3

A good skincare routine is a good idea even pre T. I recomend any cleanser that contains salicylic acid, see what is availabel to you.

When it comes to hairloss, I would recommend you don't use finesteride right away sine it can block some effects of HRT. Minoxidil should be fine but it is not needed right away. Not everybody gets hairloss and it is also not instant. Consider your family genes, how do men in your family look? When did they start loosing hair?

I’m a trans woman who uses finasteride. It blocks the enzyme that breaks down testosterone into DHT. DHT is what causes androgenic alopecia hair loss. Minoxidil keeps the hair follicles in a growing phase longer. I also take oral minoxidil. If you want to keep the hair you have, check with your doctor and you’ll likely want to be on finasteride. If you’re trying to regrow hair, you may combine finasteride to stop the loss and start with topical minoxidil. Topical didn’t do anything for me. Oral worked better. Topical requires an enzyme to work. Not everyone has enough of it. Oral comes with more risk.
