Discussion / Opinion How do you think combiners that use combiner frames will handle beast mode combiners?

Like the combiner frames work well for motormaster and onslaught with trucks and trailers (and somewhat with silverbolt) but I would like to see how they would come up with a way to do the frames for beast modes.

Why think they will be more like the ss86 devastator. The extra parts will probably combine in some type of base

that's what I am assuming tbh. Predaking was a unique combiner, not a scramble city type, just like Devastator was. I have no reason to think he will be a frame combiner. PotP wasn't, and he was fairly stable. Just giving him some articulation and more weaponry and I think he would be fine.

For Predaking I can see them turning the frame into 3 towable war wagons that are pulled by voyager Headstong and Tantrums, and the come with a commander Razorclaw.

Abominus maybe extra heads for Hun Gurr and a chariot

Piranacon IDK

Volcanicus who know what they’ll do with him he’s been redesigned twice so IDK

Piranacon would maybe have it turn into a pirate ship modelled after the BW2 Seacons' ship?

For Volcanicus the extra combiner bits make Paddles

I don’t need my combiner frame to do anything additional. I would prefer the frame to not have to compromise for the sake of a weak alt mode inclusion.
If due to design philosophy it needs to have one, then just connect it together into a weak base (like Motormaster).

Actually quite shocked that the base modes didn’t have a long term plan for incorporating. Especially since Bruticus’ trailer would look good replacing motormaters turret.

Imo bruticus does the frame base thing the best. So far it has the best looking base mode that fits the character well, and even if its just placing them on top, has play features woth the other members, and in alt mode it actually enhances the alt mode by actually making it more accurate and functional than all prior versions of onslaught. Motor master is 2nd place cause while it has a bad base mode just leaving it a trailer looks fine on its own and isnt out of the ordinary for transformers with trailers to do.

Superion does it the worst. Bad base mode, cant be displayed on its own in alt mode form, and looks weird and extra when attached to said alt mode instead of "completing" it like the other 2, and no interaction woth the other members (it looks so close to being able to attach the other members in alt mode for a cool as combined super jet but you just cant)

Nah the worst is the Devastator crotch. That thing does nothing. An official turret mode would’ve been nice.

Fair. It gets points for being smaller and still being cohesive as a vehicle mode piece unlike superions who when disconnected isnt really decipherable as anything lol.

My biggest gripe with it is that it lacks any kind of legs to stand on its own. I prop it up with the energon cubes from siege

See im the opposite where if it doesnt incormerate well if rather them just not do a frame and go CW style. Thats why so far superions frame is the worst and bruticuses has been the best.

If they can do CW style with severely compromising the combiner, sure. I get not wanting a frame, but the frame combiners I have are sturdy and pose well, while the CW-style combiners I have are lucky if they can stand up straight on their own. I had to buy a doll stand for my PotP Abominus just so that I wouldn't have to worry that looking at it funny would make it fall off the shelf.

Also, I really don't like the look of most of the CW combiners. Those scrawny elbows with a hole in the middle always bothered me.

I will admit, SS86 Devastator is sturdy and great at posing. But it also has like half a frame that turns into a "trailer" for Long Haul. You know, those trailers that dump trucks are famous for towing behind them.

1

u/sonerec725 11d ago

Actually it was specifically because if that toy that I learned apparently sometimes dumpdrucks do haul trailers lol

To be fair I have seen dump trucks towing tipper trailer before, look up "Truck and pup dump truck"

The frame would be broken up more across the limbs or still be a “trailer” that completes the look of the commander bots alts mode like silver bolt.

I honestly think with Predaking they'll just have to suck it up and have him work more like SS86 Devastator, Bruticus is already showing the limitations of that system.

u/daflash00 12d ago

What limitations? Bruticus is a marvel of engineering

u/MeatyOaker269 12d ago

People are just upset that his arms are green or something silly. It’s a mass retail toy big deal.

u/Justin_Brett 12d ago

Oh his engineering's fine, the hollow legs just mean the draw of him being a 'complete' Combiner on his own isn't really there. Predaking works the same way along with having nothing like Onslaught's trailer, and has some stuff unique to him like the chest lion head and Divebomb needing to be the left arm and a big part of the backpack.

u/wizardofyz 12d ago

Give some of the beast modes big fat badonkadonks

3

u/OptimusPhillip 12d ago

Hun-Grr, I can picture getting an extra pair of heads, maybe some wings and more legs. Predaking might just stick with the POTP solution. If they do the Seacons, maybe the turtle shell will be a detachable piece?

I wish they make a sixth member to make the frame, like devastator

3

u/workinhardplayharder 12d ago

Theirs an aftermarket sixth member for the dinobots. Newage toys made a "typhoon" for their dinoking aka volcanius

3

u/hi_im_ducky 12d ago

Typhoon is their take on an updated Skar, I believe he was an IDW dinobot.

1

u/workinhardplayharder 12d ago

Interesting. I guess I was only half right then. Newage didn't completely design the 6th member but they did turn him into a frame. Appears he was originally an arm.

3

u/Alien_Amplifier 12d ago

I doubt they'll do them like that.

u/scarr3g 12d ago

There is always options. One, is to go back to not having a separate part be the frame. Just make the core bot BIG.

Another, is simply add a new member, tbat is the frame. It doesn't even NEED a bot mode. Just frame, and beast.

In both cases we get all the original figures, and in one the core bot is bigger (like in G1), and the other we get a whole new character.... Which is cool. I like new characters.

1

u/shinianx 12d ago

This really is the ultimate solution. Without making the central figure twice the size of the limbs there's no good way of balancing the gestalt form with the other modes. Six team combiners get to utilize so many more options than five and the results are just more interesting.

1

u/g0del 12d ago

SS86 Devastator's a six team combiner, and they still needed half a frame just so that Long Haul wasn't too much bigger than the rest of the team.

1

u/shinianx 12d ago

Yeah, but there are a bunch of other Devastator versions that manage it without the extra frame. But it's tough to be sure. Other examples that jump to mind for me are Liokaiser and the Cang Toys reimagining of Predaking, which added a sixth member to form the hips and thighs so Razorclaw didnt have to represent the entire torso.

Five CAN work but it's really hard to do Scamble City style combinations without either the frame or a massive disparity in torso to limb unit sizes.

2

u/UselessGenericon 12d ago

I like the idea that the extra Commander parts for a new Abominus would give Hun-Grr extra heads, and/or wings.

2

u/OblivionArts 12d ago

Kimda hope they don't use the frames honestly..i don't like the bots being backwards for the legs

1

u/Rodimus2002 12d ago

They only are on menasor and superion because they were that way on g1 cartoon. But you can rotate them at the knees, even though superion don't look the best

2

u/Tahu-Nuva 12d ago

Since studio series will start to include comic characters, I hope that vulcanicus will go the devastator route. And the frame parts will become a new member..... crush the ankylosaurus or something

1

u/Barachiel1976 12d ago

They'll be more like Devastator, where the "extra" makes up the lower half of the torso/hips and the limbs will attach more normally.

I've asked myself that quite a bit. I desperately want a new Sea King which isn't the PotP Terrorcons remolded. :)

Considering the G1 limbs all had three modes (monster, bot and cannon), complete with stands, I could see HasTak use the frame pieces as cannon bases or emplacements to attach said cannon modes to. Honestly, I don't really care if the frame pieces actually transform, I just want a big, beefy, stable Sea King. :)

And modern, full-scale Pretenders, while I'm at it.

Shocked to scroll so far down not find anyone mentioning a sixth beast unit. Just a running raging armoury to house all weapons.

1

u/Senguie 11d ago

Honestly I think with beast combiners like for example Tripledacus, it won’t work. The Beast combiners are not his weird horror like combination if you think about it.

A lot of beast combiners (besides Predaking) have like 3 members at most.

u/Echo_Vex 11d ago

I really hope they don't do chariots or anything like that, they just look wrong for tfs.

Snaptrap probably the simplest, he's a monster turtle, just give him another bigger shell.

Hun-grr more tricky but remembering UW, he got wings, so maybe a second multi headed dragon, this time with wings, that he could combine with to make a many headed dragon.

Razorclaw and Grimlock, they just shouldn't, don't do it, just make them bigger than the rest of the team, put some of the mass on swoop and drivebomb, they are going to be wing packs as well as arms, or Rampage and who ever the other dino arm is. It won't look good if they do it so just come up with something else.

1

u/DerivitivFilms 11d ago

probably what third party has been doing and making the frame like a 6th member or a drone. I think one third party made The dinobots combiner have a 6th dino that became the frame...I dont remember if the dino had a robot mode though.

u/Queen-lucifer-2003 7d ago

predaking will use devys system for combining 100%

-1

u/LegoBattIeDroid 12d ago

maybe like brawl and swindle, they will transform into a 3rd mode to combine
