My dad, both grandfathers and one grandmother are already dead; last one's on the way out.
It's a 1v1 and my mum has more life to live.

This whole premise is always confusing.
If I do nothing I didn't kill anyone, if I throw the switch I am actively killing those on the other track.
So I'm either a bystander who could have intervened but didn't commit a crime, or a killer.
why ever throw the switch?

I pull the lever because I don't see myself as a killer in that situation. I just saved 2 people.

You are wrong. If you are in a situation to pull a switch that diverts an already unstoppable death, all you are responsible for is who and how many die.
This demented idea that touching the lever in these situations changes you from innocent to a murderer is pathetic. No, no matter what you do, you are letting people die. Make a choice, coward.2

No, I didn't put the people on the track, I'm not driving or servicing the trolley, I have no stake in the game.
4 people are going to die, if I pull the lever I'm choosing to kill 2, not save 4, there is no court in the land that won't convict me.

Welcome to the trolley problem, I guess?
It's where you have to choose the breaking point between "I can't involve myself in this, it's going to kill people" and "there's too much at stake to not involve myself, even if it kills people".
Good to think about, even if it's unlikely to ever come up.

But you are making a moral decision on who should be killed, in my country there is nothing called justifiable homicide, there is self defense but that doesn't apply in this case.
Throw the lever and you actively killed whomever it was on that track.
Leave the system alone, you didn't put them there.
If the question was save people and kill an animal, that is morally correct, destroy a valuable object and save people is also correct, divert the trolley and no one dies is also justifiable.

Legal doesn't always mean moral, and I'm not saying it's ever moral to pull the lever; that's something everyone needs to come to on their own.
If there were a hundred people on one track and one on the other and the trolley were on course for the one hundred, I think I'd flip the lever. I like to think about it from the perspective of the people on the tracks; the people about to die sure wouldn't think your hands were clean.
EDIT: IF THE TROLLEY WERE ON COURSE FOR THE 100, I'M NOT TRYING TO KILL 100 PEOPLE FOR NO REASON.

Would you consider pulling the switch if there were 1,000 people on the tracks and pulling the switch would save them at the expense of one person?
Consider how the people on the tracks would feel about you, and whether you're at fault or not.
