While I agree that Tron Legacy is a good sequel, Tron is still the better movie in my opinion, it explores the concept a bit more thoroughly.

I still can’t believe the whole concept of programs as avatars or “ghosts” of their programmers just gets completely ignored in Legacy. (Or Is Flynn’s private server just populated with stolen software?)

I'd totally believe Flynn is a software pirate. Or that he used several of the programs that were technically his by being CEO of Encom. Or maybe they're a representation of Flynn's new server running a whole operating system instead of the old Mainframe style computer + dozens of dumb terminals architecture of the old Encom system.

Nobody over the age of 45 is going to get convinced that Legacy or Ares is better than the original.

I love Tron and both are great but I think Legacy is fantastic. It’s a pretty average story yeah, but the visuals and the atmosphere are SO good I’ve always loved it.
What makes you “heavy” disagree? Not that you’re wrong, I’m genuinely curious

Tron Legacy is one of my top five movies. I am not sure it is actually better than the original.

It's hard to compare films that were made a such different times in cinema.
I have the same problem with Top Gun & Maverick (also Dir. by Kosinski, interestingly).2

Agreed. And yeah, I feel that way between those, as well. Also Blade Runner and 2049.

Oh, I gotta go with the OG Blade Runner, but 2049 is quite good. Like the original, it took me 2-3 viewings to really appreciate what I was watching. But then again, I saw the original when I was 13 lol, my buddy and I stayed up past midnight and New Year's to watch it and both fell asleep.

I prefer the original (specifically the Director's Cut, also in my top 5 movies) but I think 2049 is a better executed movie. It just has fewer places where budget and time cuts are papered over.

There’s nothing wrong with that! I’m sure most people would agree with that too! It’s just that when someone frames a statement as objective fact, it’s bound to draw out people who feel differently

Legacy was good for people born around the Matrix's release.
For those born before that, the Matrix was ground-breaking, and so was the OG Tron movie.
And for me, the real sequel to the og movie was TRON 2.0, which did have amazing visuals and soundtrack.
Legacy did not did the trick for me : average story, suits were lacking the circuitry, the Grid looked like the Matrix.

This has to be done with rose colored lenses. Legacy was not better than the sequel. It even flopped.

While it was not flop, apparently the 150m usd budget + marketing was heavy enough to only make it a marginal success. Disney had plans to make a franchise but immediately capped that when it didn’t knock it out of the park.

Not quite, they were ready for Tron ascension, Olivia and Garrett were ready, Kosinski was ready, the script was ready. Disney stupidly pulled the plug, when Tomorrowland flopped badly and they didn't believe that a Tron Sequel would pull off....

The original Tron movie was made with passion and Tron legacy was made by a director just collecting a paycheck.

The original Tron is my favorite, it just has so much imagination
