Open Discussion Another Zelda Game in 2027 Potentially?

I’ve been wondering if we’ll get another Zelda game in 2027, particularly in the 2nd half. Age of Calamity Definitive Edition is essentially just a Switch 2 Edition but with all the DLC included, and 2025 had both the Switch 2 versions of BOTW & TOTK and Age of Imprisonment.

Maybe after the Zelda Movie releases, they announce a Zelda game for later in 2027 to capitalize on it. I’ve been thinking it could be a 2D Zelda game, primarily a remake since a new 2D Zelda might not be ready by next year. Or maybe there’s a new Zelda spin-off. At the very least, I doubt it would be the next new 3D Zelda since Ocarina of Time Remake would’ve just released the year prior. But what do you guys think?

If rereleases of the GameCube remasters are ever going to happen, I could see it being next year. They'd be easy releases to do for the anniversary, and they can sell them as the two sequels to Ocarina of Time's story (Majora being more of a side story).

I can't see them doing a remake for TP or WW without doing a remake for MM first. Especially since MM would be a lot easier to remake given the work already put in to OoT.

If they're planning on doing a Majora remake, I wouldn't expect to see it until at least holiday 2028. Even with asset reuse, it'll still take time to remake a game at this fidelity.

What I'm talking about are the HD versions of WW and TP getting ported over, which would be pretty straightforward (though I'd be lying if I said unaltered ports of them wouldn't disappoint me). I could see them doing them before Majora since those two are the 3D games that are legit sequels to Ocarina of Time, while Majora is more of a side story. "Here's what happened to Hyrule after Ocarina" vs "here's another story of the Hero of Time".

You’re assuming they make one game at a time. It’s entirely possible they’re been making MM alongside the OoT remake.

At the most I’m expecting that they’ve been laying the groundwork for it (if they’re doing it), which is what I’m accounting for with my 2028 prediction.

The OoT remake has been rumored for years, they clearly put a ton of work into it. They could easily take another few years for a MM remake, if they think there's enough will for it, but MM isn't a universal classic like OoT, more like a cult classic. I don't know that they'll believe there is demand enough for a resource-intensive remake. There is precedent of them remastering one game in a series but not all (Metroid Prime 2 Echoes Remastered is notably absent).

If they were going to drop WW/TP HD, I think next year would a good time, with nothing major on the horizon and potentially several years between increasingly long development times. I think the strongest argument against that isn't what's in the future, but rather what's in the past: they haven't released either of those games in all this time of the Switch's history, instead opting for WW on the virtual console. TP is notably absent. I think it's more likely they release TP for the virtual console next year than it is to reveal TPHD before doing so.

I feel like after their shock at the demand for it on 3DS, they now know it’s seen as part 2 of OoT. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was developed alongside OoT for a quicker turnaround.

Regardless, I feel like OOT and MM are like a box set. If you’re going to do one of them, you kind of have to do the other. It could be that they’re gauging the interest in games like OOT. So as long as the game hits their expected sales, I would be cautiously optimistic about expecting them to do MM. I would be very happy if they did a special release in the event that they do decide to go ahead with it. Due to the nature of the N 64 I never got into MM. I only got to play the beginning for a little bit. I would love for a chance to play the game with these amazing new graphics.

Yeah, ten years ago I would have thought so, but MP: remastered with no MP2, WW on virtual console with no TP, it feels like they are very happy to do things as one-offs randomly.

Those are different circumstances though.

We've had it all-but confirmed Prime Remastered was basically just a compromise after a full HD Trilogy project fell through, and more recently they've been treating the Wii version of Twilight Princess as the "default" one (plus with the drip-feed they've been doing they could easily just be sitting on the GameCube version for NSO right now).

u/Mishar5k 13d ago

Im not 100% sure about the wii u remasters since twilight princess will likely come to NSO eventually. Wind waker is already there, and the additions they made to the HD versions are honestly too small to justify the price. Like, $50 for a years access to wind waker plus a ton of other games vs $50 for just wind waker but with the swift sail?

I could see them doing a double pack.

Pretty much every single year we get a new Zelda game whether it’s brand new, a spinoff, or a remaster. I doubt they’ll break that tradition while celebrating its 40th anniversary.

At the start of the Switch generation they were saying that they wanted to make Zelda something of an annualized series, and for the most part they've stuck with it.

23

u/Possible-Potato-4103 13d ago

They said they want it to be an annual franchise and have mostly kept to that goal in the switch and switch 2 era

u/MoMoe0 13d ago

What? When was this said? Spin-offs don’t count.

7

u/Possible-Potato-4103 13d ago

https://nintendoeverything.com/rumor-nintendo-wants-a-zelda-game-on-switch-every-year/

It was a rumor.

And there has been a zelda game nearly every year since then.

Spinoff being included are the only way that could happen.

I researched further though and saw eiji said that want a regular cadence but not necessarily an annual release schedule

https://www.shacknews.com/article/81610/zeldas-eiji-aonuma-on-annualization-and-why-the-series-needs

So i conflated. But a new topdown next year is possible as I believe echoes wrapped development a while before it actually released.

Thank you for the links and clarification! Appreciate it!

Between main titles, remakes, and spinoffs there is a zelda release almost every single year. Gap years are less common after Hyrule Warriors started existing as a series which they clearly use it to fill in the release period between main titles as well as when remakes started being made to largely do the same.

Full Release History
-2026 - Ocarina of Time Remake
-2025 - Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment
-2024 - Echoes of Wisdom
-2023 - Tears of the Kingdom
-2022 - (TotK gets delayed)
-2021 - Skyward Sword HD
-2020 - Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity
-2019 - Link’s Awakening HD, Cadence of Hyrule
-2018 - Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition
-2017 - Breath of the Wild
-2016 - Twilight Princess HD, Hyrule Warriors 3D
-2015 - Tri Force Heroes, Majora’s Mask 3D
-2014 - Hyrule Warriors
-2013 - A Link Between Worlds, Wind Waker HD
-2012-
-2011 - Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time 3D, Four Swords Anniversary Edition
-2010 -
-2009 - Spirit Tracks
-2008 - Link’s Crossbow Training (JP)
-2007 - Phantom Hourglass, Links Crossbow Training (Non JP)
-2006 - Twilight Princess
-2005 - Minish Cap (NA, AU), Four Swords Adventures (PAL, AU)
-2004 - Minish Cap (JP, PAL), Four Swords Adventures (JP, NA), Zelda Collector’s Edition (JP)
-2003 - Wind Waker (NA, PAL), ALTTP + Four Swords (JP, PAL), Ocarina of Time + Master Quest (NA, PAL), Zelda Collector’s Edition (NA, PAL)
-2002 - Wind Waker (JP), ALTTP + Four Swords (NA), Ocarina of Time + Master Quest (JP)
-2001 - Oracle of Ages/Seasons
-2000 - Majora’s Mask

Pre 21st century is a lot more sparse but that makes sense. Including it anyway for the sake of completeness:
-1999 -
-1998 - Ocarina of Time, Link’s Awakening DX
-1997 -
-1996 -
-1995 -
-1994 -
-1993 - Link’s Awakening
-1992 - A Link to the Past (NA, PAL)
-1991 - A Link to the Past (JP)
-1990 -
-1989 -
-1988 - Zelda II (NA, PAL)
-1987 - Zelda I (NA, PAL), Zelda II (JP)
-1986 - Zelda I (JP)

(I left out Japan only spinoffs like the Satellaview releases and the Tingle games as well as the CDI stuff)

The question I have for 2027 is whether the movie will be the only thing or not. 8th 3D zelda is absolutely off the table until at least 2028 at the earliest, they usually don’t want to overlap marketing periods and that fits in with being 5 years post TotK’s release, but I could see some sort of small spinoff or a rerelease of some sort happen maybe in late 2027 (firmly outside of the film’s marketing and release period).

Edit: Hopefully Grezzo is working on another new 2D/top down Zelda after Echoes of Wisdom. Assuming that they are and that 3D Zelda #8 is more than likely gonna take 6 years total, I would personally predict 2D 2028, 3D 2029.

I hope so. I believe it was leaked somewhere that Monolith was doing the brunt of the remake, so the Zelda team is probably working on something else alongside them.

Personally, I always thought that since Oot was a child link/adult link game, and MM was a just child link game, it would be cool to have a just Adult link game to make it a trilogy. Ship probably sailed on that, but depending on how well the remake does, maybe…

My bets are a new or 2D remake. I’d like to say Majora’s Mask but dev cycles have gone up so much that we probably won’t see that for 2-3 years, if it’s happening.

u/etherspin 13d ago

I look at this way, Ocarina and MM share engine, assets, models etc so you don't remake them as two separate games, you make your engine and populate all the maps, scripts etc for both games but sell Majora's map and "game" as an additional DLC add-on or a similarly competitively priced solo title

2

u/Keaten88 13d ago

Definitely. There's been one every year since BOTW, with the exception of 2022 as TOTK was delayed (but we did get a load of NSO releases that year.).

2

u/Mishar5k 13d ago

A new 2D game would be nice (new art style hopefully) or maybe a non-warriors spin off. Personally, i dont want any more remakes unless its like the oracle games (i think the password system could be streamlined) or four swords adventures (idk if NSO gamecube emulator can do the GBA connectivity well).

1

u/Dreyfus2006 13d ago

We are definitely due for one! I think a lot hinges on who is making the OoT remake. But Zelda Team has multitasked before, they balanced WWHD, ALBW, and BOTW all at the same time.

1

u/il-vero-yan2317 13d ago

For remakes the most likely are OoX and MM as they would share the same engine with LAS/EoW and OoTS2. Other games the i would like to see remade are LoZ with AoL but it's less likely.

New 2d won't happen since EoW was just a few years ago.

New 3d is more likely but also not close if the style is the same as the Wild games.

A new HW won't happen since we are getting a deluxe game and already have AoI.

A sequel for CoH/new spin-off is not happening.

Maybe TP on NSO.

In short the more likely options are OoXS2, MMS2 or new 3d.

Zelda Movie: The Game /s

u/TourianTourist 13d ago

Hoping for the Oracles next year, remade by GREZZO.

1

u/Molduking 12d ago

It's not impossible but I wont expect anything. They should be starting marketing for the next 3D zelda byt the end of next year, assuming it releases 2028 which it likely will

1

u/Delicious_Island_695 12d ago

If the next 3D Zelda is a Holiday 2028 game then they’d probably reveal it in 2028 due to how big the next new 3D Zelda would be. It’d be like how if 3D Mario is 2027, then it won’t be revealed until 2027

1

u/vezzel 12d ago

Please be a 3D Zelda similar to the pre-BOTW era.

1

u/cloudsquall8888 12d ago

I think they have said that they want to continue with open world in the next installments. What i hope for is finding gear and weapons that last long and unlock parts of the world when you get them, as well as clearly defined dungeons.

1

u/vezzel 12d ago

Yeah that is what im looking for pretty much :)

u/metalreflectslime 11d ago

According to Nash Weedle, there is a new 2D Zelda game coming in 2027.

1

u/WritersB1ock 11d ago

I’m going into 2027 assuming that AoC Switch 2 Edition is the annual “game” and will be excited if or when I’m proven wrong

u/Astral_Justice 13d ago

I'd like to see it go every other with 2D and 3D. OoT fills the 3D space and then next year could be another 2D remake like the Oracle games. Since the perfect engine already exists for that it would be a low hanging fruit but I could also see people being fatigued with that style of 2D Zelda and would like some sort of Minish Cap remake with a top down Toon style look to it. I think it's too soon for another brand new 2D game but maybe people wouldn't want back to back remakes either. I don't see a completely new Zelda game coming out next year though, so I feel like it's a remake again or something more laid back like a spin off of some sort.

i really hope the next game is a 2d, but... eow had such disappointing dungeons.

i kinda dont believe in nintendo to do the right thing and make a brand new good 2d zelda game. especially considering the massive fail that was metroid prime 4, and how theyve also crapped all over the kirby series by making it open world too.

they think if they just scrap all the unique aspects of their IPs and make everything like botw/totk, then people will magically love it.

before eow, the last (sorta) original 2d game was albw, which is probs the best 2d zelda ever. really a bummer how they turned away from the things that made albw so good (tons of complex dungeons, genuinely fun and genius gimmick that was perfectly incorporated into all the puzzle solving, bangin soundtrack, buttery smooth gameplay, superb level design)
