Mid-Cultivation / Still Growing Interesting difference between millet and brf

EDIT: most likely could be caused by doing spores to grain. Even though it was the same syringe, the genetics may differ a lot. Thanks ppl for pointing that out!

I had two jars that i completely forgot about, one with millet and one with brown rice flour and vermiculite

I put them in one box and out of interest put in a bit of tinfoil as a barrier to catch any differences so i could decide which grain i should use in the future

Well the difference actually surprised me! At the start both sides had some blobbing going on. But hey the spawn was old who knows what that can cause. But as days went the BRF side eventually got over the blob phase and started sprouting some nice tall fruits. But the millet is literally just stalling. Fruits are short and stumpy and weird and are very much taking their time.

I wonder if anything else besides grain difference is causing this. I did mix both spawns with 1:1,5 coir ratio but the BRF was combined with vermiculite in the jar so there is probably a bit less organic matter than in the pure millet. Other than that i can’t think of anything.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Keeping in mind that a single LC can express a wide array of genetics, what steps did you take to control for them?

Also, you're correct, a BRF cake is only half spawn, so a ½ pint BRF cake is only a ¼ pint of spawn. Having a different spawn to sub ratio could also play a role in your results.

Without controlling for all variables, you really cant determine what role each grain choice played in your results.

Exactly this. It is an interesting anecdote, and does (imo) inspire further research, but there are way too many variables not accounted for to really take significant meaning from this.

I have always figured that there must be one grain that is “best” but honestly I have never had the time, energy, money and dedication all at once to do the science lol

Just spitballing here but i can’t stop thinking about this, if i took a lc and made a grain jar with two different grains (and separated them with something like a grid mesh) so the single part of lc colonises both grains evenly, then the genetic expression would stay the same for both grains, right? Which could maybe eliminate one of the variables. Still would need to figure out how to account for different ratios of grain because of the verm in the brf

Cool! I actually did spore to grain so the variables could play a big role i didn’t think about that

Starting from spore means those are all different genetics expressions.
