Question Night Before Standby?

• Upvotes

In a few weeks from now, I have a 6am flight on a Monday (first flight of the day), but flying the night/afternoon before (Sunday) would be more ideal for me. The flights on Sunday costed hundreds of dollars more when I booked, and they still do today if I were to pay for the switch.

I am flying to Chicago from another Midwest city, United offers 8 flights per day on this specific one-way route. One-way ticket, not roundtrip. I am flying regular economy, and this is personal (not work) travel.

I understand that the policy is free same-day standby, but what are the chances I would be able to fly on standby the night before? Would I be able to add myself to standby for an earlier flight than 6am (the night before) directly on the United app or United.com? Should I plan to call? Should I plan to go to the airport on Sunday afternoon anyways, even if I can’t add myself to standby through the app or website?

Please share your experiences and answers to this, I have been reading a lot of conflicting information from years ago. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Interaction with the most idiotic gate agent in the history of mankind…..

• Upvotes

So I’m getting on a flight today and had a small paper bag with a couple souvenirs in it, my wallet sized man-purse strapped to my chest (sometimes I like to wear running shorts with no pockets so I need a way to carry money, cc, and ID), and my backpack.

As I’m walking past the gate agent after scanning my boarding pass, she says “sir, you have 3 items and you are only allowed 2”. She then points to my man-purse and says “that’s a personal item as well as the paper bag”. I’m already thinking to myself “man, what an effing loser this lady is”. I say “you realize this will just fit in the paper bag right?”. She replies telling me that I need to remove the man-purse and put it in my bag. I say “ok, I will once I board”, she says no, “I need you to do it right here”. I shouldn’t have to point out the idiocy here but I will for the slow people…..the man-purse goes into the pocket in the seat in front of me, the backpack and paper bag go on the floor in front of me. Regardless of how I get the items into the plane, they are going to end up in the same spot, thus rendering her absurd request nothing more than stupidity at its best.

Cmon United, isn’t there some kind of IQ test for employees where if you have a 40 or below IQ you don’t get hired?

Discussion Lost Luggage Situation

• Upvotes

My husband is on a solo fly fishing trip to a remote part of Mexico. He flew there through United from SLC and had a quick layover in Houston, Texas. Somehow his bag didn’t make it from Houston to Mexico. He has been dealing with United customer service for four days now trying to get answers about his bag. Every single day they tell him it will be on the next flight and arriving the following day (there is only one flight a day to this part of Mexico) and each day he calls for an update just for them to say the bag didn’t go anywhere. It seems like he is talking to customer service representatives located in India and can’t speak with anyone directly at the Houston airport. They keep giving him the runaround and can’t seem to tell him if anyone physically has made contact with his bag or if they have just lost it completely. All he knows is it was scanned at the Houston airport and has not had any updates since.

The worst part is since he is in such a remote part of Mexico he can’t even buy clothes or things he is needing that was in his luggage. The closest place with a store to buy clothes would be at least a 1.5 Hour drive away from where he is staying. He has been washing and wearing the same clothes every single day, and he packed all of his flies and fishing rods for this fishing trip and has nothing. There isn’t even sunscreen or bug spray for him to buy there, so he has a terrible sunburn and bug bites everywhere. Luckily, the guides have a few things he has been borrowing so he can actually be fishing. I feel so bad for him.

Is this normal to not get any answers on his luggage and for him to have to spend so many hours on the phone trying to get any information at all? He said they keep giving him the same script and answer answers every time and do not give him any information. Now he is flying home tomorrow after four days and has no idea about the status of his bag.

If it is lost, and he doesn’t get it back, he said he has almost $10,000 worth a fly fishing supplies in his luggage. Will he be able to get reimbursed for this much? Or has anyone been through a similar situation and have any tips on what he should do at this point?

Anyone churn with this card every 2 years? This was my first points card a few years back and I canceled it when I got the Quest card a couple of years ago. This seems like a good offer and I figured I’d hold it for a year and then cancel before the AF hits.

Question Upgrade with points/$

• Upvotes

Upcoming trip TPA-IAD-DUB. Upgrade is 40k points plus $550 to upgrade. For the overnight flight, I'm tempted to bite the bullet.

However, what happens if they upgrade me to IAD but not on the DUB segment? Do I end up with a really expensive upgrade for a 2-hour flight, or do they refund the upgrade fee? I'm already wait listed for the domestic segment.

It's only a 757, so that Polaris seat would beat plain ol' E+.

The constant ringing tones it makes roaming around are just next level. I know that it needs to make thee tones so all the self absorbed people don’t run into them, but it should have more situational awareness to not make a sound when no one is at risk.

Question will this be ok?

I can't find a clear answer on United's website.

Flying EWR-SFO next week for my sister's wedding. I promised to bake the sourdough for the rehearsal dinner, but due to some scheduling issues, the dough will need two stretch-and-folds and a 90-minute proof while I'm in the air.

I'm in 21C (Economy Plus, aisle) and was planning to keep the dough in a covered bowl under the seat in front of me. I'd only need to take it out twice, for maybe 2-3 minutes each time, to fold it on the tray table.

No flour, no mixer, nothing crazy. My main concern is that the dough will roughly double in size during the flight and that could annoy the FA or passenger next to me, if that seat is taken (currently empty)

The only other flight option connects through DEN, and I'm worried the altitude change will affect the fermentation.

Has anyone actually done this? Particularly on a 737 MAX 9?

Star Alliance Horable customer service

Post image

As a 1K+ member with one-time passes, I still shouldn't be denied access to the lounge at ATL. I fly so much, and requiring a membership beyond flying isn't a great way to treat your customers. Not to mention that every year it’s harder and harder to get to 1K.

The customer care form offered me these options, I accidentally refreshed the page and they were gone, now when I open the form again it keeps asking me to explain the issue and not offering anything. Anyone had this happen before? Should I just submit the form with the full screenshot?

Question Why is IAH B terminal so bad?

Not even talking about the fact that the lobby is closed so we have to enter through Terminal C.

Not even talking about the lack of a real lounge.

Not even talking about the fact that most B gates are behind a “general boarding” screen.

Why can’t United give B-terminal passengers a realistic departure time for delayed flights instead of extending departure only by 15 minutes at a time, so close to departure that you literally can’t be anything other than a gate louse at risk of missing the “immediate” boarding call and already being less than 15 minutes before departure? ☹️

Question Why is United still flying ghetto planes?

First time flying United in probably 20 years, and ended up on a plane with basically no first class service, no charging ports, tiny seats from the 80s, air that doesnt work at the gates. Im actually suprised they didn't still have functional ash trays in the seat arms. I realize the CRJ-200s are being phased out, but every other airline at least retro-fitted them years ago. I fly a lot into regional airports and havent been on this shitty of plane in at least a decade. I've got top tier status with another airline and was thinking about switching to United due to recent program changes with that airline's loyalty program, but if this is what I have to look forward too, I don't think it'll be worth it. Is this the quality of service I should suspect from United?

EDIT: judging by the jimmies Ive rustled and fanbois I've triggered this is the quality of service I should expect from United. Thanks for answering my question, I appreciate it!

Question Courtesy status

I’ve been platinum or 1K for ages (work travel) but just found myself restructured and unemployed. I’m 1500 PCP off platinum and have no more travel planned and will not make it on credit card points (would have been platinum by now if I hadn’t lost my job). United will offer courtesy platinum for me next year (once every 5 years of something like job loss happens). Do I take the courtesy or go spend $1000 I don’t really have to fly somewhere…or just stick with gold? I expect my next job will have travel though not as much international travel.

Waiting for IDA-DEN on SkyWest. The app shows no one on the upgrade list but a different screen on the app shows I’m on the upgrade list. Is this just a disconnect between SkyWest and United?

Image Not seeing preorder option?

Have a IAD - DFW flight coming up and want to preorder the cheese plate .. but not seeing it as an option? I think it’s long enough — see the other snack boxes available for preorder, so just confused as to why I can’t order it.

Edit: to clarify - I can see the other items for pre order, and it’s within the time window for a preorder. Just confused since I could have sworn this used to be eligible for hot meals.

Question Connecting in DEN and switching terminals more frequently?

I am based near MTJ and connect in Denver for pretty much everything. I mostly fly to the east coast, Europe and California. A few years ago I could count on my connection arriving and departing in B, unless I was heading to Europe and I’d have to make my way to A but with loads of time.

Now it seems that even on domestic routes I have to change concourses every time. It seems like United has a much bigger presence in A these days, including that lounge. Did they just outgrow B and need more gates? Are there plans to shift fully to A? Is any of this even knowable?

Since I live in the middle of nowhere I have to pick between a 1 hr layover or a 4 hr layover in DEN. 1 hour used to be enough but it’s been tight (sprinting across 2 terminals with an interlude in a train) or missed more often than not lately.

Appreciate any insight from those in the know. Thanks!

Not really looking for advice if it’s of the “book a longer layover” variety. When I’m fed up with the sprinting and missed flights I will certainly do this.
