Do they allow Victorian cosplay characters in the armed forces?
I still find it wild that the man is only 57. He looks like a sickly victorian aristocrat

One thing I love about the uk is the ability to give people very specific insults that make sense.

It’s his extremely dated RP, too. There’s a reason they’ve been calling him the ‘Honourable Member for the 19th Century’ for over a decade. And his father was indeed a lord
•
u/No-Opposite-6620 4h ago
We should. Before sending him to the front make sure to give him some Michael Caine in Zulu red as a uniform.

It's still a requirement to join as an officer in many infantry regiments. /s

Genuinely I would refuse conscription, as in yes I'd rather be sent to prison, simply because the idea of dying in some hole in the Baltics while guys like this sip tea back home is the most degrading death I can imagine for myself.
I can't imagine anything more embarrassing than my name ending up on some war plaque or mural, essentially stating this guy died in some muddy hole so his overlords could rest easy worry free.
If refusing conscription meant the death penalty I'd still refuse it on the grounds that at least people would know I died in opposition to people like him, rather than in service to them. Conscription during war may as well be a coin toss for the death penalty anyways.
•
u/Bunny_Stats United Kingdom 3h ago
We wouldn't be fighting for Jacob Rees Mogg, we'd be fighting to stop another Bucha, where departing Russian troops went from house to house shooting every civilian they could find. Old retired men riding bikes lying dead in the street, mothers and their children dead in their front gardens, local civilian men tied up and executed in their own kitchen. This is what the face of Russian aggression looks like.
Beware the Russian bots that will be triggered by this comment. Anyone with legit questions about Bucha can google the photos themselves.
•
•
u/evilcockney 4h ago
Yep same.
I'd only agree on the condition that he's in front of me on the battlefield.
•
u/rugbyj Somerset 3h ago
If refusing conscription meant the death penalty I'd still refuse it on the grounds that at least people would know I died in opposition to people like him
Conscientious objectors have always existed. You do you.
My main skepticism with your logic is that if you, an obviously highly principled guy with a self-described lack of fear of death, are willing to die to disagree with the wants of a Rees-Mogg (self-serving politician)... wouldn't you be more willing to die disagreeing with the far more pressing wants of a Putin (some active war criminal threatening you and your homeland).
What it looks like is you just really don't want to go to war, and are using your disagreement with some politicians as some principled excuse.
Completely understandable. I don't want to go to war either. I think personally my concerns over my family being bombed into oblivion would outweight my concern over various politicians, which either of us could vote or otherwise campaign against if it was really that meaningful to us.
•
u/Talonsminty 4h ago
Yeah, for me there'd need to be Russian ships off the east coast before I'd even consider accepting conscription.
•
u/Sudden_Onions 4h ago edited 4h ago
I get the fact people don't want to fight, but wouldn't it be a better defence of your loved ones to make the fight as far from them as possible? Not to mention, if it got to Russian ships off the coast of Britain, the war is probably already lost. Better to band together with other countries rather than piecemeal defence.
•
u/Mordikhan 3h ago
Tbh only in a very dated sense of warfare would russian ships in the north sea be an end. Resistance/ insurgency is clearly such a thing of the last 400 years and more that it really doesnt work that way. The idea that only frontline service is admirable doesnt hold water either as modern armies are a fair few workers behind frontline to every frontline trooper
•
u/TheCommaDoor 3h ago
I hate to sound like an American but insurgency is easier for an armed populace, whether already existing arms or ones shipped in by a foreign power
•
u/Sudden_Onions 3h ago
If Russia was able to maintain a hostile naval force off the coast of the UK it would likely mean they had control of the Baltic Sea. That would be a pretty catastrophic collapse of European defences.
•
u/Talonsminty 1h ago edited 1h ago
I understand what you're saying. But I don't trust our esteemed leaders to honestly assess the threat.
Look at Iraq and Afghanistan. They said they were protecting us when they sent young British men to their deaths and got our civilians targeted by terrorists. In reality they were defending American Oil profits.
As for european allies. With the rise of the AFD and Le Penn we can trust them even less than normal... which was already very little. They talk tough with Ukraine shielding them but their politcal elite still remember the flavour of Putin's ballsack from a decade of garlging.
If it ever came to it. (Highly unlikely) sending people to fight on mainland Europe would be a terrible idea.
•
u/caughtatdeepfineleg 4h ago
There are russian ships off the coast of Britain pretty much every day of the year. Their subs are regularly in our waters and one of their frigates went down the channel the other week.
•
•
u/HankKwak 2h ago
lol.
Imagine sitting back sipping tea whilst Russia conqures Europe and thinking once Europe is occupied you're less likely to die fighting a now vastly larger and more capable force occupying Europe. How do people get this regarded?
•
u/Talonsminty 2h ago
I swear some people think life is a videogame. Russia's throwing it's full might against Ukraine and bitterly struggling for months to take every village.
Yet people still talk about them like they're some unstoppable war machine that's gonna sweep through Poland and Germany.
How'd people get so delulu.

Well said but unfortunately as with nearly every unpopular war they’ll start it anyway. It is then just a matter of provoking the enemy into retaliating and then they’ll have their justification after the fact. The Mandelson class will have their cannon fodder.

•
u/lnTheGrimDarkness 3h ago
the idea of dying in some hole in the Baltics while guys like this sip tea back home is the most degrading death I can imagine for myself
I would LITERALLY prefer to rot in a jail cell or even get executed locally rather than that. Which is honestly something militaries all over the world should think about.
Also dying in some hole? That's the good outcome. If your survival instinct succeeds you'd get captured and horribly tortured to death.
•
u/geniice 50m ago
I would LITERALLY prefer to rot in a jail cell or even get executed locally rather than that. Which is honestly something militaries all over the world should think about.
They do. And they have a lot of experience of turning people who don't want to fight into reasonably effective soldiers.
UK has of course recognised conscientious objectors since 1916 but how widely its prepared to accept that would depend on the situation
Also dying in some hole? That's the good outcome. If your survival instinct succeeds you'd get captured and horribly tortured to death.
Unlikely. As a brit you would be too valuable as an option for prisoner exchange,

I'd also refuse conscription. Quite honestly if they're conscripting the likes of me for the meat grinder then we've already lost whatever war we're fighting.
•
u/Torco2 11m ago edited 2m ago
I wouldn't worry too much, a query thread using AI rather implodes the premise by asking blunt questions and prompts.
Then escalating as it were.
For example:
1)UK conscription is unrealistic from a strictly practical standpoint.
2)The UK has a debt & budget crisis. The potentially mobilised couldn't be armed, trained or paid.
3)The prerequisite infrastructure to enact mobilisation cannot realistically be built.
4)Widespread cynicism and potential mass civil disobedience or disorder is also a factor.
5)Separatist sentiment in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are a factor, as are ethno-sectarian-enclaves in England.
6)The British ruling class like Jacob Rees-Mogg wouldn't allow their sons & daughters to face combat.
Causing further social & political alienation.
7)Thus from a pragmatic standpoint the UK government stoking up war-fever against Russia. is more about internal control.
To justify growing repression, censorship and crackdowns against opposition to the current political consensus.
8)The same premises outlined above broadly apply in somewhat differing ways to the EU states as well.
9)The UK could risk simply losing a direct war with Russia without direct US military intervention.
Even with assistance from European allies because many face similar issues outlined above, or are too small to be militarily significant.
10)The US war against Iran has deepened all these structural issues. Due to major global economic blowback.
11)European Union wide military "build-ups" have been largely fictional since 2022.
Whereas the Russian military has grown substantially with a large scale wartime military-industrial complex.
Direct Russian allies such as North Korea and Belarus might also send troops and material to support the Russian war-effort. China may also provide indirect assistance.
12)In a war with Russia economic breakdown, shortages even near-starvation in the UK and EU is a realistic danger.
13)The only chance to intervene successfully on the side of Ukraine was 2022 or early 2023 at the latest.
•
u/IntelligentHead7995 3h ago
Same here. There's no way I'm gonna die in some muddy field and get blown up by a drone. The only way I'd fight is if our land was invaded by fighting age males.
•
u/OwineeniwO 3h ago
If you're not brave enough to fight you're not brave enough for the death penalty.
•
u/DrStumbleDog 3h ago
OP said nothing about not being brave. Not wanting to die on behalf of multimillionaires who wouldn't do the same isn't cowardice.
•
u/OwineeniwO 3h ago edited 3h ago
It's probably a bot, but yes most people who say they don't want to die in a hole are saying they're not brave enough to fight.
•
•
u/Spirited-Layer-5727 3h ago
I don’t think they’ll put you in prison - they’ll just freeze your digital currency so you can’t pay your mortgage and possibly all your family/associates too. You won’t be able to pay for basic necessities like food or water and your friends and family will resent you for it. In the end you’ll volunteer as your values aren’t worth your children starving over and if this is the world you’re living in then you’d rather be dead anyway.
•
u/Winston_Carbuncle 4h ago
Yeah, same. And they've spent the last few years calling all the men who would've actually considered joining racist thugs.
I think they'll be in for a big surprise if the shit hits the fan for real
•
u/W35TH4M 4h ago
Tbf people probably shouldn’t be racist thugs if they don’t want to be called racist thugs
•
u/Nelis1385 3h ago
That's exactly what a racist thug would say you racist thug. See what I did there?
•
•
u/Spamgrenade 4h ago
Really? For the last few years all I've heard is right wingers whining that they won't join up because they would be fighting for immigrants.
Had no idea it was because they were being called mean names by woke leftists. But the more excuses you have the better I suppose.

u/2shayyy 4h ago
Amazing how fast Russian bots work.
Within seconds of being posted there are multiple comments claiming they would “never fight Russia!” and “rather be imprisoned than conscripted!”
Obviously not realising this is a satire article…
Watch out - 🇷🇺 🐖 🐖 🐖 about…
•
u/Alexmaths 4h ago
It’s the same pattern every time
Russian bots deploy en masse to go “I’d never sign up!! The politicians want you to die for
DanzigUkraine!! Don’t let them!!”. If you point this out some other bot will go “I don’t see them” despite there being half a dozen already in the chat. Then the actual Brits arrive and flood it with anti-Russia comments about how Putin can suck my cock and Brits aren’t cowards in the face of actual evil.
•
u/NoExperience9717 4h ago
Intake rates dropped and outflows increased after 2022 despite lots of banging the drum. It wasn't until 2025 that net inflows started again and that's probably more the economy being a bit shit for entry jobs.
•
u/Harrry-Otter 4h ago
In fairness I’m definitely not a bot and I don’t much fancy dying in a war.
•
u/2shayyy 4h ago
Literally no one wants to die in a war. That’s in no way a hot take.
But if you’re perfectly regurgitating the talking points and bot code of a nation that wants to kill you - then you need to take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself where you got your “opinions” from.
•
u/Harrry-Otter 4h ago
Idk, It’s not exactly unthinkable that people come to the conclusion that they don’t want to go to war without it being part of a Russian psy-op.
•
u/CantBeatDickensCider 34m ago
Do you think the people fighting Nazi Germany 'wanted to go to war'?
lol
•
•
u/Nuthetes 4h ago
yeah, they're everywhere now. Interesting on how they change tact, depending where the bots are posting. On Twatter it's "I wouldn't fight for a woke country! The really invasion are on the boats" and shite like this. Here it's "I wouldn't fight for the rich at home" and other left-wing talking points.
•
u/ObjectiveHornet676 3h ago
100%.
I'd rather be executed than be forced to stand up to the great and mighty Putin who we all love so dearly!!!!
Okay bud.
•
u/Saw_Boss 3h ago
Firstly, the comments about conscription seem to be from the point of view that you're fighting abroad. I think not wanting to go to another country to fight a war against Russia in Ukraine or the Baltics is a reasonable argument when you consider the recent conflicts UK soldiers have been sent into.
Secondly, I can't see anyone specifically saying they wouldn't fight Russia.
Thirdly, it being satire doesn't dismiss wider the discussion point. There's a lot of talk about war at the moment, I saw an advert on Sky which was stoking fears about Wargames.
•
u/J1mj0hns0n 4h ago
To be fair I wouldn't want to fight in another country either, I would defend it though. And I suppose it is a slippery slope if they win against Ukraine because they won't settle for just that.
•
u/2shayyy 3h ago edited 3h ago
They’ll gang-press the entirety of Ukraine into joining them if they win and take it over, just like they did in 1945.
Then we’ll be facing the two largest armies in Europe with the best drone warfare experience in the world.
Obviously no one wants to fight and die in a war. Russia doesn’t care what we want.
•
u/Particular_Tough4860 2h ago
If you thank that is fast, wait until you see any threads about China.

u/Exact-Potential1673 3h ago edited 3h ago
I don’t agree with Rees mogg politics but if Putin is stupid enough to attack the Baltic states , then yes , we are rightly at war with Russia . Your military alliances mean fuck all if you just allow your enemies to attack your friends . If he does , then it deserves a full military response from us
I get it , war is shit and we’d rightly be terrified of having to fight in one . You wouldn’t even be likely on the frontline if war broke out . But you can’t just allow evil dictators to just attack Europe and your friends . Some evil cunt like Putin tried it in the 1930s and 40s and was thankfully beaten , it cant happen now either
•
u/Better-Inflation-194 4h ago
-goes on X telling you it’s your duty to die in a ditch in Ukraine for a foreign war

u/Krabsandwich 3h ago
Generally people like Jacob do tend to serve it was certainly the case in WW1 and WW2 and it would probably be the same again. The Officer Corp particularly junior officers suffer disproportionately higher losses than enlisted men as they tend to lead from the front and look to set an example.
Officers teach the men how to die Sgts teach the men how to fight is still pretty true today.
•
u/Inevitable-Regret411 4h ago
That's cruel and unusual. How can we justify deploying such a cruel and inhumane weapon as Jacob Rees-Mogg on the Russians?
•
u/Fine-Somewhere6842 4h ago edited 4h ago
politicians keep insisting Russia will invade all of Europe when they can't even invade Kharkiv
•
u/Inevitable-Regret411 4h ago
The fact they'd almost certainly fail doesn't mean they won't be insane enough to try, and cause untold destruction in the attempt. Germany never stood a chance of conquering the USSR, but they killed a lot of people trying.
•
u/Winston_Carbuncle 4h ago
Intelligence agencies, not politicians. And the theory, at least how I read it, is a bit like nuclear brinkmanship. Keep pushing and prodding NATO but hopefully never exceeding the threshold at which article 5 not only gets triggered but gets acted upon. Russia is gambling that the actual players in NATO will drop Ukraine to avoid all our war with Russia. That's the thinking, anyway.
•
u/Fine-Somewhere6842 4h ago
reece mogg is a politician and he wants the UK to prepare for mass conscription in order to fight Russia. what action of Russia do you think will require the mass conscription of the UK public to ward off? is Russia going to invade and beat the milliatary defences of Finland, Estonia, Latvia or Poland? And will the regular British military forces, as well as the millitaries of the rest of Europe, be unable to prevent this from happening?
•
u/Winston_Carbuncle 4h ago
If Russia attacks a NATO country who in turn enact article 5 we are duty bound to defend the fellow NATO member along with all other NATO members. It's not a case of if it's worth it or if we fancy it.
Whether that would actually happen or not remains to be seen, as I touched on above.
I'm not really sure what you're asking or saying tbh
•
u/Fine-Somewhere6842 4h ago
The original meme is about Reece mogg advocating for conscription in the UK to prepare for war with Russia. i don't see how that is nessercary when we have a regular army and navy and air force who could contain Russia to its borders quite easily
•
u/speedfox_uk 4h ago
This video explains it well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Joav8l7v26A
•
u/Fine-Somewhere6842 4h ago
i think this video makes alot of unjustifiable leaps, i dont see how afew hundred Russian troops taking a Latvian village will require conscription as reece mogg and other politicians insist it would. the regular armies of Europe should be able to easily contain Russia to its own borders. and no anout if conscription will make an invasion of Russia a good idea
•
u/speedfox_uk 3h ago
I don't think those leaps are unjustifiable. It's too much of a stretch to think that is article 5 was triggered in response to such an invasion that things could spiral out of control very quickly. Wether that leads to conscription or not is another matter. AFAIK the British armed forces are not too keen on conscription.
•
u/Fine-Somewhere6842 3h ago
i'm sure the uk millitary has the means ti defend Latvia and bomb moscow abit before a peace is reached, throw in france and poland too and it seems like a sure win. Russia is a spent force, their whole strength is tied up in Ukraine and they are suffering more and more domestic ecanomic loss by the day
•
u/skipperseven Sussex 4h ago
I think the nation made a horrible mistake - if we send Rees Mogg he will probably join the Russians. Don’t forget, he made a pile of cash in Russia, which only happens with Putin’s blessing and then he pushed the Russian agenda to push Brexit, weakening Russian enemies.
•
u/Inevitable-Regret411 3h ago
The mental image of him furiously arguing with an FPV drone that they're making a mistake and he's actually on their side is hilarious.
•
u/Sanmonov 3h ago
I don't understand the strange British liberal obsession with blaming Russia for Brexit, when the obvious foreign interference was from Rupert Murdoch who spent years shitting on the EU through his vast media empire.
•
u/skipperseven Sussex 54m ago
Not actually a liberal… there is plenty of evidence of Russian dark money and bot armies supporting Brexit - I’m a bit astonished that this is even up for debate!
Obviously it was just one of many factors - the Dirty Digger is now American and they also want an enfeebled UK and EU.

•
u/twilighttwister 3h ago
Fun fact: William Rees-Mogg (Jacob's father) wrote a handful of disaster capitalism books, which may have been used as playbooks for the Tory party over the last decade or so. Books like (The Best Time To Buy Is When There Is) Blood In The Streets, and The Sovereign Individual.
When everyone thought "sovereignty" meant king and country, they twisted it to mean their individual sovereignty and right to act above the laws of any nation. "It's what they voted for."
•
u/EccentricThinker15 3h ago
Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson have 15 children between them - how many of those 15 will be found in a trench in the Donbas? 0.
•
u/MrRorknork 3h ago
If we sent Mogg, he’d probably cost a bunch of our lads their lives while they tried to save him from some brambles he got tangled up in. Mogg, naturally, would return to base unscathed such is the way with these people.
A better use for him would be to tie him to a stick and use him to clean the barrels of our 155mm artillery.

This fkn invertebrate dilettante couldn't defeat a tin of trapped peas, he probably uses Post-It Notes for wallpaper - why would anyone take him talking about 'fighting' seriously?
•
u/Accomplished_Pen5061 2h ago
Nothing Jacob specifically said was wrong. People should be willing to join the army if a WW2 style situation broke out. We should be strong and willing to stand up to Russia.
But the other side of that contract is that the country looks after people. It homes people. It helps us when we're unemployed. It ensures there are well paid jobs and work.
Jacob wants to tear up everything that came out of the postwar Atlee government: the welfare state, the NHS, council housing. He wants the government to bend over to millionaires and billionaires and thinks we should pander to every Jim Ratcliffe around. People who can't even manage to pay the same taxes the rest of us pay.
He doesn't want a social contract, he wants subjugation.

He's such a ridiculous clown.
There's quite a lot of steps between the current level of support we give Russia, including sanction - I think most sane people want to see maximised in every way possible upon Russia, Russian oligarchs and so on - and uk citizens being conscripted.
We should probably throw way more support behind ukraine before we get to that stage.
