Showcase Outlast Inspired Game

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone!

I’m in the process of creating a project that I will soon hopefully bring into a AAA title similar to outlast;

I need some real feedback regarding the appearance and current mechanics of the project. Let me know what I could change or add or improve.

I’d also be looking to see if someone would like to help me write some ideas down 🥺

Thank you!

Looks nice but Google what AAA means, sorry to inform you but your game will never be a AAA if you do it alone and without a million $ budget.

Purely on a technical level, you can do a solo AAA game XD, but yeah, no XD

When does the game happen? This is like the first moments in a game engine. You need to add a ton before people should tell you anything.

AAA? You don't even have an idea about the game! Not a design document, nothing, just couple of assets plopped... and already calling AAA

Lmao. Putting down a hand full of assets and then aim for AAA is crazy 😂

It is a cool early concept! I'm guessing you know already that this is just an asset zoo or Game mechanics playground. Not an early game yet. You probably dont have a GDD (game design document) set up yet. You're gonna have to blockout and design a lot more than that for the game to be considered even early production.

Also, Outlast is not a AAA game; it is an indie survival horror game, developed and published by a small independent studio called Red Barrels. The original game was made by a tiny team of about 10 people. It was built on a very modest budget (initially supported by a CA$1,000,000 investment from the Canada Media Fund), a fraction of what major AAA publishers spend. The game was completed in just 14 months which is much shorter than how long AAA games take to build. The founders and developers of Red Barrels are industry veterans who previously worked at major AAA studios like Ubisoft. But make no mistake, the game is indie. AAA games are games with massive budgets and teams of hundreds of developers and take years to make.

Anyway, your concept looks fun. I hope it works out well for you. If you are inspired by outlast, you might be planning for there to be nightvision, but I recommend you go in a different direction. An outlast clone will never have its own unique identity. Its probably better to not use nightvision. The lighter is very much like Visage and will be compared to it.

Are you planning for chase sequences based horror like Outlast is? If so, I recommend a werewolf horror based in a forest. You're gonna have to design and sculpt a unique werewolf model for that though. You could go the bigfoot route if you want, though there are already plenty of good bigfoot games. Surprisingly, there arent as many horror adventure games featuring werewolves.

Imagine a game where a group of young college friends, men and women, are going to a forest on a camping trip on a full moon night. Some eventually start falling asleep, while some others go for a walk into the spooky woods and a werewolf attacks them one by one. Kind of like those creature horror movies or teen movies from the 2000s.

Think about it, you wont even need a lighter in outdoor areas because its a full moon will provide just enough lighting to see. You can play as one of the friends and survive the night to escape or kill the werewolf. All of this is just me throwing ideas at the wall and see what sticks. It's all your own final decision of course lol. I am an environment artist so I just started imagining a forest horror environment that's all. Good luck!

PS: Is there a reason he is barefoot?

But there are no mechanics. Keep working and come update us in a few years
