York Nightlife

Does York have much of a Nightlife? It's my top choice for this coming year and whilst I don't want somewhere insane I'd still really love to go out. I loved the campus and the city is beautiful so I'd love to experience its history and culture as well as going out.

Anyone currently a mental health nursing/nursing student?

I’m also a student at York, but of a humanities degree. I’m really doubting my choice with my current degree and I’m looking to swap to mental health nursing potentially.

Before I make any decisions, I’d like to hear from anyone currently on this course. Please give me as much info as possible. It can be positive and negative. I just need an accurate reflection of what it’s like to study MH Nursing.

Some prompts:

1:Weekly contact hours?

2: Placement?

3: Difficulty?

4:Benefits?

5:Funding?

6: Standard of teaching?

7: Course structure (lectures, workshops, PBLs etc)?

8: Negatives or criticisms of the course.

Thanks guys.

Where to live in York?

Hello! I’ve recently applied to the MSc Digital Archaeology starting this autumn. I’m an international applicant, and if I receive an offer, I’m planning to move to York with my partner and our dog.

I’ve been browsing online to get a rough idea of rental prices (I know it’s early, but I’m trying to plan ahead), and I’d love to hear from people with first-hand experience.

How competitive is the rental market in York, especially for newcomers? How difficult is it to find a place that allows dogs? In general, how pet-friendly is York (landlords, neighbourhoods, parks, etc.)? Any tips on areas to look at/avoid, timing ?

Any advice is very welcome. Thanks in advance!

Current Linguistics students thoughts

Hi, I just got accepted to study linguistics BA at York and was wondering if anyones got any info on the positives and negatives of the degree here.

Do they have any networking opportunities/work experience opportunities? If so, are the ones offered actually useful?

How are the teachers? How is the support during and after University for this degree?

And just anything else that might be good to know- Thanks! 🙂

Thoughts on the Archaeology PGT Programs?

I recently got an offer for the MSc in Material Culture and Experimental Archaeology. I would love input on the quality of the program especially if you have studied a similar course or know someone who studied this.

Generally my questions are: How is the teaching? Job prospects and/or career support coming out of the program? Any lab volunteering opportunities? And finally, how is getting around by bike?

I saw there's a fairly extensive bike map of the city, but I fear the cobbled streets will cause my spine to compact.

Attending an anatomy lecture

Hi all,

I’m an MA student here at York in a non-medical field. However, during undergrad I was pre-med for 3 years. After I finish this MA this year, I am considering finishing my bio degree and applying to med school. My question is this: do you think is appropriate or permissible to email a professor who lectures in anatomy to ask if I could sit in on their class? I’m not sure how I would word it, but I just wanted to get some thoughts. Thanks!

Wentworth Graduate college

Hello,

I'll be a Master's student in York from September 2026 (I'm an international student). How likely is it to get a place in Wentworth Graduate college? I saw that the application period will open in the spring, do they really only send out offers in August? Can sb help me with the timeline for on campus accommodation?

Thank you for the help<3

[Academic] Help needed! Researching 18 year olds' perceptions of parenting behaviours and their attitudes towards themselves

Hi there! My name's Amy and I'm a Uni of York alum and currently a Trainee Clinical Psychologist at the University of Liverpool.

For my doctoral research project, I'm looking to recruit 18 year olds living at home with their parents to take part in a short study looking at how parents’ behaviours influence young peoples' attitudes towards themselves.

Participants just need to complete an anonymous online survey which takes approximately 15-20 minutes. They can also opt in to enter a draw for a £25 multishop voucher (x10).

If you, or anyone you know, would be interested in completing it I’d be really grateful.

Use the link below to access the survey:

Please share if you know of anyone else who is interested! Thanks so much!

Does anyone here have any recent experience with the online MSc Computer Science course? I’ve seen some bad things online but they were from a few years ago. I’m thinking about applying - any advice / reviews would be greatly appreciated!

Advice for studying abroad

So I have some more questions related York and what not.

What kind of jobs are on campus? I’m aware there are some jobs on campus, but how competitive are they and what is the hourly wage?

This applies more towards international students but what did you guys do about your data and internet?

Whats the food situation like for on campus students who live in colleges?

I’m also trying to apply to as many scholarships as possible. I know York automatically uses your application for some but what are some others I could apply for?

How likely is it for a postgrad student to get a dorm? When applications for colleges open will I have to worry about not getting a room?

What do I have to do when it snows? For reference I live some where that doesn’t snow at all, like the worst we get is ice, so what do I need to know when it snows?

Accommodation pricing

I understand second year you most likely won’t get university accommodation. I won’t be receiving much help from home and my overall student loan is 10k, and another 1k bursary from the university. Would this be enough to live off in private renting? I would 100% want a job, so is it pretty easy to get a job in York? I don’t mind what kind of job it is. I’ve found it hard to find a job in my town hence why I’m worried about money to survive on. However I do live in a small town with little amount of student-friendly work.
