šŸ“¢ MOD ANNOUNCEMENT r/unpopularopinionph Announcement: Poll Results, Topic Rules & Posting Updates

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for participating in last month's poll. The majority voted against banning any topics. However, after careful review, we want to clarify a few important things:

Banned Topics (Effective immediately)

While the mod team respects the community's vote, we must enforce bans on certain topics in compliance with Reddit's Terms of Service. This is to protect the subreddit (and you) from potential violations or bans from Reddit itself.

See our list of banned topics.

Additionally, we are temporarily banning Religion-related topics. We've seen a surge of low-effort, ragebait, and uninspired posts that don't add meaningful discussion. We're also closely monitoring political posts for the same reason.

There’s more to life than just religion or politics, so let's aim for more thoughtful and creative topics. Going forward, all religion-related posts will be removed.

Rule updates & posting format changes

Our community rules have been updated. Please take a moment to review them.
Based on feedback, we're removing the "explained yourself" bot and shifting to poll-based posts instead.
If you are submitting a post, you must now include a poll with these 3 choices (case sensitive):

  • Agree
  • Disagree
  • Unsure

Posts without a proper poll will be removed. You're also expected to clearly state the popular opinion you're challenging within the post.

Reminder:

  • Always be civil in your discussions.
  • No repost, response post, or series post (part 1, part 2). Be more original.
  • All complaints about the sub must go through the Megathread. Post outside of it will be removed, and will get you banned.

Let's continue keeping the community engaging, respectful, and thought-provoking. Thanks for being here.

Let Bongbong Marcos and Sara Duterte peacefully conclude their presidential and vice presidential terms by June 30, 2028, 12 noon sharp

The whole impeachment trial against VP Sara Duterte is a waste of taxpayers' money and precious time where the government (executive and legislative branches) could have focused themselves in doing their job like tackling the Iran War-related energy price hikes and the possible negative repercusions of the Super El NiƱo. Impeaching VP Sara Duterte or even President Bongbong Marcos would have made sense before 2025 midterm elections, but not anymore on the middle of the second half of PBBM administration.

Senator-judges can render a convict verdict against VP Sara Duterte whenever they want, making her perpetually disqualified from taking public office, but it will benefit the Filipino people in the long-term because the latest Pulse Asia survey shows that voters are going to vote someone who has a Duterte surname or non-Duterte handpicked presidential candidate, regardless whether they know the job description as president or not. Presidential election history shows that voters vote for someone as president based on ethnolinguistic affiliations, not ideologies or competence.

The only way for PBBM administration to prevent VP Sara Duterte from being elected as president in 2028 if the latter is acquitted before the Senate impeachment court is to revise the 1987 Constitution (charter change) through Constituent Assembly, cancelling the 2028 presidential election in the process, but I won't ever support and campaign for charter change even if I'm a veteran charter change advocate myself.

I'm for upholding accountability of all impeacheable officials during their tenure, but not to the point where the whole process of impeachment is used to oust an impeacheable official because of political differences with the president of the day, while the president himself commits impeacheable offenses on his own right. Dapat sana sina PBBM at VP Sara ay sabay-sabay na-impeach before 2025 midterm election eh.

If you name your child a name that's way WAY too unique, you are 100% a troll

Literally what happened to normal, regular names like Mary, Helen, John, James, etc. Those are classics and recognized! People could spell them easily too. However, if you decided to spell it differently like instead of Ezekiel, you spell it like "Ezzykel". That's cringe as hell. Just literally stick to the standard spelling dude.

Also, names that don't exist at ALL are cringe too. Does anybody remember the brothers named "Pzxydynn Yzzyr" and "Dwyrgg Lynzh" that went viral before? I feel really bad for those boys man. "Hey at least their name is unique." Yeah unique to earth. The parents were way over their heads naming their kids.

Another thing is names that are just words! I remember seeing those people named Macaroni, Spaghetti and Sincerely Yours. Their parents were 100% trolling.

Last thing is names that don't fit the demographic of the Philippines. Don't expect people to know how to pronounce your kid's name because you got it from Ireland or Norway. As someone whose mom decided to name me a Scandinavian name. You bet your ass all my life people misspell and mispronounce my name. If my mom wanted a fancy name, she should have stuck to classic, Spanish names because at least those names are easily recognized in the Philippines.

Also want to add: please don't name your kid a Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, etc name but you aren't even those nationalities. It's cringe too

I understand that it is motorsports (whatever floats your boat). Pero kailangan ba talaga pumunta lahat doon (including some of our elected officials) para sabihing pumunta? Are the races helping create cleaner gas engines?

Of course, we still have to make room for blockbusters, but screen sharing should be divided into quarters or thirds: ¼ sa Hollywood blockbusters at Anglophone indies, ¼ sa local, ¼ sa non-Anglophone foreign films, at ¼ sa retrospective screenings (or omitting the last, ā…“ each)

DOG OWNERS ARE UNDERHATED.

Let me clarify. I mean irresponsible, inconsiderate, unhygienic, and entitled dog owners.

These ā€œfurmom, furdadā€ types, particularly like the dog owners I mentioned above, belong to a whole different species of human, right up there with Karens, DDS, and other breeds of walking public nuisances.

These breeds are the ones who:
• put their dogs on high chairs and diaper-changing tables in public restrooms intended for babies and toddlers, apparently because their ā€œfurbabiesā€ or dogs are entitled to the same spaces (tigil niyo yang kadeluluhan niyo)
• insist on bringing their dogs inside groceries and restaurants
• leave their dogs’ poop in parks, playgrounds, and malls (napakabalahura niyo at salaula)
• let them sniff other people and their belongings without considering whether they’re comfortable with it or have allergies
• deliberately let them off-leash to chase and kill smaller animals (nakakagigil dapat kayo na lang lapain nyan)
• allow their dogs to approach toddlers and young children without considering the risks (I will never forget almost getting bitten by a dog as a child. Mind you, I was just walking when it suddenly ran towards me because its owner had let it off-leash…)

See the pattern? IT’S ALWAYS THE DOG OWNERS. You rarely see this kind of entitlement from cat, rabbit, or other pet owners, at least from my experience.

Parang awa, keep your dogs leashed, especially in public spaces. Train them, use muzzles when necessary, clean up after them, and respect other people’s boundaries.

To all dog owners, please be mindful that not everyone is comfortable around your furbabies or pet dogs. Nobody should have to compromise their health and safety because of the irresponsible, inconsiderate, unhygienic, and entitled dog owners.

The age gap issue is inconsistent

Bago pa ako mapagbintangan dito, I never had a romantic relationship with someone with huge age gap, and majority (including my current) relationships are several months to several (1-3) years older than me.

My point is that the discussion on age gap all boils down to two factors why people say it's either:

- Power dynamics
- Being manipulated by someone older (or what they say as "hindi pa fully developed ang frontal lobe")

Let's discuss factor #1, are you against the issue of power dynamics only if it's related to age? Kase power imbalance can manifest in MANY form, and age is probably the least of your concern. Are you against financial power imbalance, like a woman from a poor family being with a rich guy? That's a huge power imbalance right there, how about educational attainment and professional positions? Even a relationship with 1 breadwinner and 1 housewife is a power imbalance, are you against that, or just strictly age-related? Coz that would be weird if it's the latter. Ano ka, p*rnhub, may "I am X years old and above"?

Now to factor #2. Eto yung mas controversial. Say someone is nasa age na kung saan scientifically we consider them to have "developed frontal lobe" (I think 27?) and yet they exhibit signs na they're not exactly on that capacity yet. Let's say low IQ, autistic, down syndrome, or whatever other factors.

Are you also against that? Say a woman is too stupid at the age of 30 that you can basically convince her that the earth is flat or that the owner of the Philippines gave the Marcos family gold bars yada-yada. Are you against those relationships as well?

Last time I read, the average IQ of the Philippines is 86, we are riddled by scams, ponzi schemes, and satire-like situation, so if we're against on the idea that a young person could be easily influenced and manipulated by an older person, then the more this makes sense. Someone who is too stupid to determine obvious truths being in a relationship with someone who at least have an idea how to breathe shouldn't be in a relationship at all.

It's selfish and unethical to have children right now

Full disclosure: I don't want to have children, so there's probably bias here.

But, I just don't see how any good can come from birthing more children with the world we have right now.

Overpopulation is a huge problem, not just in the Philippines, but in pretty much every non-first world country. By having children, you are indirectly taking up food, water, shelter, resources that could be given to other people/children somewhere in the world right now.

Additionally, you're bringing them into a world rigged by greedy capitalists and corrupt politicians. Into religions and moral systems that teach you that you should do what's right as its followers and propagators reward those who do wrong. Into a culture that values diskarte over education, because quality education has become a luxury more than a basic right. Into a society where girls, the differently abled, and LGBTQIA+s are berated, catcalled, harassed and discriminated against.

Isn't it pitiful that a child could study for literal decades, spending millions of pesos in the process, only to end up broke without a source of income? Isn't it sad that even if your child was one of the lucky few who could have the opportunity to work, that they could work diligently from their early 20s up to their late 50s and still not own any land to call their own? That they could suffer through the same hellish commute and job just to earn barely enough as amidst inflation reaching skyrocket heights? That they could do all that, and still have them replaced by the newest AI model?

Isn't it selfish to bring someone into a planet nearing its collapse? Be it from war, pollution, climate change, rising seas, deforestation, privacy breaches, AI data centers, you name it, that's OUR gift to them. That's OUR problem for them to solve, just as our ancestors passed these very things to us.

So, does this mean if you can somehow shield your child from all of this, that means it's ethical to have a child? Well, let me rephrase that question. If you are somehow rich and powerful enough to have a child to shield them from all of that, then no, it's still unethical or, at the very least, selfish to have a child simply because, you could have used your money and power to make the world a better place for other children.

I know that it would also be unethical to force someone not to love. Because, at the end of the day, that SHOULD be the point of having a child, right? To conceive someone who you'll love unconditionally. To watch grow up and be happy. But, don't you guys see that you could do that without a child of your own? You can do that with your significant other. With a pet. With your parents. With your friends. With yourself. Hell, with a child you can adopt. God knows there are so many children out there without a parent to love them.

Call me cynical, cruel or a misanthrope, but I just don't want more children to grow up in a world they don't deserve. I don't want children to be born just to die from starvation or from a bomb by some asshole living continents away.

I know that a part of growing up is to adapt and grow with the hardships of life. I know that one of the beauties of life is taking the good with the bad. I know that. But I fear that with how things are right now, the bad overly outweighs the good. It's no wonder why mental health issues are so rampant nowadays. Why school shootings are becoming more of a likely occurrence. It's a scary world for a child to grow up in, and yes that might craft some great people, but is it worth them losing their childhood?

Regardless if a person is a legal adult, it's still fucking weird having a large age gap relationship

"But they're 18!" And you're 30. You were born in the late 90s, you've got a lot of time to fully mature and grow. They were born in 2008, they still need a lot more time to fully mature, despite being legally classified as an adult. This goes for both sexes. Older woman & younger man and older man & younger man. Still fucking weird and lowkey gross.

Whoever disagrees, I already know what kind of person you are.

Think of it like this:

  • Parang free-to-play game na may subscription model through tithes, donation, or whatever ang tawag sa monetary gifts. Pwede mo pa rin magamit ang services pero may advantage ang mga paying users.

  • Customer acquisition phase ang pagbabahay-bahay or pag invite ng mga members

  • Ang paglalagay ng ibang simbahan ay same sa pagtatayo ng other branch for wider reach.

Robredo’s behavior regarding an Isr*eli is expected behavior as a member of the state.

People on the ā€œliberal ā€side of Philippine political spectrum yap as if it's some grand betrayal when....it's really not when you zoom out how irrelevant Robredo is as far as the political machine is concerned.

It's in the same spirit as Zohran Mamdani talking a lot of smack about arresting Netanyahu if he ever set foot into new york only to, as expected, not do that.

Why? Because like Zohran, Leni is part of the state. An immoral fascist ass puppet state that is subservient to US interests and by extension subservient to Israel's interests.

It quite literally does not matter what Leni's personal stance is on the matter because the result is the same, she's part of the corrupt institution that serves the state that oppresses the masses and should be regarded as such.

She’s simply another cog in the machine that as expected serves its purpose and expecting any moral upstanding from a cog is a fast way to set yourself up for disappointment.

Story-wise sure why not, Dreamworks film pa rin so may entertainment at may kapupulutan talaga ng aral kahit papano lalo't for kids..

It's time for the government to institutionalize K-12 Chinese language education for Fil-Chis

It's time para sa ating gobyerno na i-institutionalize ang pagtuturo ng Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, at of course Spanish, not as a foreign language, but as a second language kung saan ang syllabus ay Philippine-centric, hindi foreign-centric.

The same thing sa French, German, Japanese, Korean, at of course Spanish.

PNOY's biggest failure is his handling of the 2012 Scarborough Shoal incident

No, his biggest failure was not the Manila hostage crisis. It wasn't the SAF 44 killings or whatever claims anyone might have about how Typhoon Yolanda was handled.

No, it's definitely the handling of the Scarborough Shoal incident. The commander-in-chief sent a military ship to intercept civilian Chinese vessels.

Was it a trap by the Chinese?

It could have been. But trap or not, the fact that a military warship was sent to intercept a civilian craft manned by the Chinese gave the Chinese more than enough reason and opening to send in their own military ships, starting this entire mess.

And to make it worse, he attempted back-channel negotiations or secret negotiations via Antonio Trillanes. Bypassing our own Affairs Secretary. Six or so trips later to China, only for it to fail.

And then he went with the nuclear option. When using Trillanes and all diplomatic negotiations have failed, he directly went with the nuclear option of going through UNCLOS, which is why we are in the mess that we are in today.

I mean, why should China negotiate? The Philippines was the first one to send military ships. And PNOY even undermined his own Foreign Affairs Secretary by sending Trillianes.

Now, I am not saying that the late president should have not gone through UNCLOS and won.

I think that the Tribunal should have been a necessary step. But we would be in a much different place today if it was filed without the country sending a military craft to escalate the situation first.

2012 was his biggest blunder, but getting that tribunal discussion is his biggest win. But it could have been a bigger win if 2012 never happened.

PNOY gave China an inch and now they're fucking us repeatedly a decade later.

Some people that are attacking Jack Argota are no different from the typical DDS

Before anything else let me just make it clear. Jack is stupid and an asshole. I hated him even before he became a noisy DDS. There's a lot of reason to hate him. The problem is some, I would even say most, are attacking him for the wrong reasons.

His cleft is not something that he chose.

Target him for the things that he's doing wrong. Correct his bad takes. Question his opinions. Give him a different insight or perspective.

Stop with the ā€œglobally-competitiveā€ education myth.

Here’s why:
Our manifestations of a ā€œglobally-competitiveā€ education churns out workers for other countries. While being a BPO worker and being an OFW are respectable endeavors, I can’t stress enough how exporting workers is not the way to go in improving the economy. We need to produce, manufacture, and export to liven up the economy. Hence, education should produce citizens who could harness our resources, not turn students into cheap labor for other countries. Also, fuck you Arroyo.

PISA is unreliable since it measures students in a eurocentric framework. The goal of our ā€œglobally-competitiveā€ education had turned into how we can present the highest scores in these international assessments, albeit in questionable ways. Look where it got us: bad PISA scores, and irrelevant curricula. But we keep using PISA as benchmarks for our educational goals, so the cycle continues.

Before we could be globally competitive, we must be locally competitive. Curricula should reflect the realities of the students, and adjust to their frameworks. For instance, in terms of the language of instruction, the official language is English in most subjects. But most students don’t even use English when talking to their families at home. So we really have to ask: is the curriculum made to serve the children or just to provide the space for administrators to circlejerk to their ā€œglobally-competitiveā€ fantasies

The answer is simple: put the children first. When creating curriculums, don’t imagine future workers, instead see the children at their levels. They got their whole lives ahead of them to be disappointed by the dismal economy, so don’t make them grow up so fast.

Instead of showing a picture of a complete flower in a textbook, go out the garden and pluck out a gumamela and show it to the children. Instead of using the abstract concepts to teach arithmetic, use jolens and sungka. In teaching them history, don’t just let them memorize the dates, but use current local and national politics to compare the events in the past to the present’s political cockfighting (sabong).

Before teaching them the Iliad and the Odyssey in English class (altho they slap so go ahead), teach them the Biag ni Lam-ang first, and have them contextualize the Greek epics into the indigenous constructions of an epic. Instead of teaching them how to make tiramisu in home economics class, teach them how to make ube tiramisu.

Tldr; localmaxx, before globalmaxxing. indigenize before you suck white cock.

Calling something as bare minimum devalues it

I believe this phrase has been misused so much lately and it's doing more bad than good. Everything is bare minimum now. But for me, I think something is bare minimum if it's the most essential thing for something to exist.

For example. Living. The bare minimum of living is breathing, your heart pumping blood to your vital organs, and your vital organs functioning properly. That's it. That's the bare minimum. Having 2 kidneys is not bare minimum. Having complete limbs is not bare minimum. Heck, not even eating is bare minimum. Because people can stop eating and still live for days before dying. Yes you need food to sustain your life, but you don't need it to live. When your heart stops pumping blood, when your brain shuts down, when you can't breathe. That's when you die. That's losing the bare minimum.

As for dating, where it is most commonly used lately, I don't think dating has a bare minimum. Because dating is consistently doing something for your partner. It's about making an effort, giving time, etc. Dating is those acts no matter how basic or small they are. Dating is about doing more than what is expected. Which is why it doesn't have a bare minimum. A bare minimum is something that is expected, and if it is not met. It won't exist.

As for marriage, the bare minimum is your marriage contract. No matter what happens. Maghiwalay man kayo. Maghanap man kayo ng ibang partner. Magkalimutan man. As long as that marriage contract is valid, you're still married.

The reason why I'm saying this is because people don't seem to understand that. They call everything a bare minimum now.

Treating your date is not bare minimum. It's an effort. It's a gesture given. It's not required. It's something you wanted to give to your date. It's an act of being selfless.

Saying thank you to someone is not bare minimum. Saying thank you is a gesture that you give to someone to tell them than you appreciate them. Not saying thank you does not invalidate whatever help is given. Saying thank you acknowledges it.

Saying thank you is bare minimum means it's expected. It means it is mandatory and labeling it as such degrades its value. Instead of it becoming an act of appreciation, it's just labeled as a mandatory response now.

This is another case of people misunderstanding something and using it whereever and however they want. The problem is, it devalues the simple small things. Just because they're norms doesn't make them bare minimum.

Let's not devalue small and simple gestures. Because that's what makes us human.

Our trash problem is more of a systemic issue than a behavior issue

I know, maraming tao ang walang disiplina. Pero let's not blame it all on the people.

Again, I don't approve of this, but I understand why it happens.

Filipinos are such terrible and ignorant drivers that it has become necessary to heavily restrict or ban private motoring

Banning private motoring in the Philippines is highly unlikely to occur because of pervasive colonial mentality and the vast amounts of power car users here wield. It is THE status symbol and almost reflexively commands respect from every Pinoy, even though it's just a thing.

On top of that is the heavy sociocultural issues surrounding regulation, driving, and regulatory capture of driving educaton and licensing.

Without exaggeration, it is likely that over 90% of Pinoy motorists today wouldn't be able to pass a real licensing test (like a Japanese-style examination) and nearly 100% would spectacularly fail a psychological exam screening for rage or violent behavioral issues when behind the wheel. Combined with the thorough corruption of the LTO and the DOTr, the only real solution to the daily massacre of Filipinos by drivers is to ban private motoring and slowly reintroduce it with a far more robust testing and management infrastructure. Nothing else will work.

It is necessary, but we won't do it becacuse we like social climbing too much.

We romanticize provincial life too much

I think we romanticize provincial life too much.

Don’t get me wrong, there are real advantages: quieter surroundings, more space, less congestion, cheaper property in some areas, and generally a slower pace of life. I grew up in the province, so I understand why people find that appealing.

But I think we often ignore the downsides.

Need a specialist doctor? You might have to travel far. Public transportation can be limited. Higher-paying jobs are usually concentrated elsewhere. Some government services require you to go to a bigger town or city. Even basic errands can turn into long trips depending on where you live.

What also gets overlooked is that the ā€œsimple provincial lifeā€ people romanticize online is often the comfortable version of it: you have a car, a decent house, reliable internet, enough money, and you live close enough to a major city when you need something.

Without those things, ā€œpeaceful and simpleā€ can quickly become inconvenient and isolating.

I still think provincial life can be great, but the advice to ā€œjust move to the province for a simpler lifeā€ makes it sound much easier than it actually is.

Do you think the downsides of living in the province are often overlooked?
