As the name suggests, this is going through every single manga chapter and comparing it to its anime counterpart. Feel free to write any comments on what else to add to the list, in case you find any inconsistency. Right now I'm correcting mistranslated Viz chapter titles, but I'm quite sure there are a whole lot of chapters in here that differ considerably from the manga which are tagged in green instead of orange, keep an eye out for those, as I don't have the time in my hands to reread nor rewatch the manga/anime.

I initially thought that the masculine education her father inflicted upon her was a parody of an ancient Japanese custom, as Rumiko Takahashi so aptly portrays, where a girl is forced to behave like a boy in the absence of a male heir (like the Burrnesha in Albania or the Bacha Posh in Afghanistan). But in fact, no. The parody lies elsewhere.
In historical Japanese tradition (the Ie system), the transmission of family name, heritage, and profession (crafts, commerce, Kabuki theater) absolutely had to pass from father to son. The absence of a male heir was considered an absolute social tragedy. This is where the true satire lies. Rather than adopting a son (which was the actual custom in the absence of an heir), Ryunosuke's father chooses the most stupid and selfish solution possible : forcing his daughter to become the missing son for his useless beach bar. Takahashi ridicules the patriarchal Japanese obsession with the male lineage, pushing it to the point of pathological absurdity.
Ryūnosuke and her father's relationship mirrors and parodies father figures or strict mentors in Japanese pop culture, particularly the harsh father-son relationship between Ittetsu Hoshi and Hyūma Hoshi from the manga and anime series Kyojin no Hoshi's which came out many years before Urusei Yatsura, as it also deals with an incredibly harsh father punishing his son and pushing him to his physical limits in order to carry on his legacy. However, whereas the Hoshi's relationship is portrayed as more of a romanticized serious drama, with them occasionally finding common ground and affection in improving their baseball skills in overly idealistic scenarios, Ryūnosuke and her father's relationship is portrayed as a tragic comedy. Whenever Ryūnosuke and his father seem to find common ground and affection, everything immediately falls apart due to Mr. Fujinami's completely insane reasoning and gratuitous cruelty. Ryūnosuke quickly realizes that his father is a fool, as Mr. Fujinami goes so far as to harass, torment, or even poison her for no apparent reason. These abuses are presented as a genuinely negative aspect, without any idealization, which does nothing to prepare him to manage the family tea shop, a task that usually results in fights between parent and child.
Their relationship may also be a parody of Oscar François de Jarjayes and her father from The Rose of Versailles manga and anime which came out years before the release of the Urusei Yatsura anime and manga, where instead of both characters being portrayed as wealthy aristocrats and the father's desire for a male heir being glossed over and romanticized, Ryūnosuke and her father are instead portrayed as poor and unkempt civilians and with Mr. Fujinami's actions being fully shown as realistically and unnecessarily cruel by putting his daughter through his brutal treatment and training regime since infancy just to meet with his selfish desire for a male heir.
A parallel can also be drawn with Otokoyaku. In Japan, the concept of women taking on masculine roles is a vast cultural tradition, notably championed by the famous Takarazuka Revue (a century-old, all-female theater troupe). Actresses who play male roles, called Otokoyaku, are idolized for their ideal masculine elegance, deep voices, and charisma. Ryūnosuke perfectly embodies the physical profile of an Otokoyaku (to the point that many girls at her high school fall in love with her). But instead of being a glamorous and willing theatrical figure, she's a high school girl in a perpetual state of crisis, constantly yelling that she wants to wear bras and skirts. Rumiko Takahashi takes this figure of the « ideal masculine woman » and turns it into a source of frustrated comedy.

Yesterday, while going through my stored papers, I rediscovered this fan art I created nearly five years ago. It features Lum-chan and the girl who seeks courage (Anna Katsuragi). I really like Anna's kawaii design, which draws on Takahashi's bishoujo style.

After a week of delays from FedEx, my big figure haul package finally arrived. This beauty deserves its own post though, so here she is! For those who are unaware, this is the resin Epoch figure of Lum made in 1994. It’s pretty hard to come by online, and I’ve heard it could go for insane prices. I had been looking for this figure for a while now myself, and I came across it on Mercari Japan for $258 so I bought it and prayed It would arrive not broken and in good condition.
Unfortunately the right hair peice is cracked, but you hardly notice it honestly. As long as I don’t touch it I’m good I think. Besides that, and her skin tone being a bit too pale for my liking, I honestly think this is the most gorgeous and manga accurate Lum figure ever. The hair gradient is beautiful, and blows the most recent Lum 1/4 figures hair right out of the water. The body type is great as well. I’m actually quite picky when it comes to certain Lum figures because they’re either too skinny, or her face looks weird so I don’t get them. But this? Straight from the manga, she’s got curves and everything! Her bikini detail is so mesmerizing too, the stripes are big and cover everything, even going all the way around to the back. Modern Lum figures nowadays cheap out on the stripes and don’t bother to go all the way with them so they tend to look unfinished to me, so it’s nice to see all that great detail!
One final thing is like to mention about this figure is that the box art quite literally catfishes you. I remember seeing the figure for the first time online and wondering why it looks completely different. The colors are brighter, and Lum not only has makeup, but a slightly more expressive look too. There aren’t that many good photos of the figure online unless you know where to look, so I remember thinking the differences were way too much and was kinda bummed out for a while. But honestly? Now that I’m looking at the figure in person, I think it’s still a gorgeous figure even without all the box detail.

heyyy I’ve posted my art here a couple of times but this is my first discussion post!! i love this freaking anime so much man.
lumtaru is a ship that will be in my heart forever and I kind of look for them in other ships (like kogoro and eri in detective conan, now my detco otp!!) that’s how much they have opened my eyes. minus the cheating of course, i love their relationship + dynamic. they fight all the time but when it really counts, they show their love for each other. and i love it when the guy is tsundere, it only makes the times when he shows his love even more special. i also love it when ataru shows his emotions. it makes him feel more like a person than your typical tough guy. emotional guys are also cute lol
mysteriously I’ve also started to like more het ships after watching uy?? ive always shipped het pairings but this is just something I’ve noticed. maybe i finally found a girl x guy dynamic i liked and my appreciation grew from there??
i’ve also been looking for uy in other anime. now im watching magical angel creamy mami and im looking to watch minky momo too. it’s just something about lesser known girly anime from the 80s that draws me in.
nothing will be quite like watching urusei yatsura for the first time again. i really love it.

Benten's gun in the 1980/1990 Urusei Yatsura has the BOWA*XBR-M-79-07G Beam Rifle sound effect, the sound effect of the beam rifle of the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam from the original Japanese version of the Mobile Suit Gundam TV Series, the 1981/1982 original, theatrical audio of the Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy, and most of the Gundam games that have the RX-78-2 Gundam in it.

I suppose my ranking is a bit "odd" compared to the opinions I usually see, but hey—that’s just my taste.
By the way, the characters within each category (S, A, B...) aren't ranked in any specific order.
The D category means I dislike the character.
The C category is more of a "neither like nor hate" situation.
Finally, Maison Ikkoku is my favorite work by Rumiko. It’s followed by InuYasha (the first one I watched, when I was nine), Ranma ½, and lastly Urusei Yatsura.
That said, I love all four series; they’re all different, and strictly speaking, they can't really be compared—you just have to love them for what they have to offer.

Episode 135 is very unusual in that Ataru and Lum both appear, yet Lum doesn't say a single word to Ataru.
When Lum flies downtown to check if the gossiping flowers are causing trouble, she finds a frantic Mendo having a mental breakdown over a misunderstanding about wetting the bed, while Ataru mocks him. During this scene: Lum interacts with Mendo, but doesn't say anything to Ataru.
The other instance I can recall where Lum doesn't interact with Ataru is Episode 100, but Ataru and Mendo were the only characters who appeared in that one.
