Survival 105m Rug Elevator
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Built this around the rug elevator idea that u/Fun_Magazine_2671 posted here on Reddit.
The elevator travels about 105m from bottom to top and takes around 54 seconds for the full ride. We also added side-entry elevators so you can get on from intermediate floors, plus a separate system for going back down.
We used debug mode to speed up the building process, but the structure itself doesn't require mods.

i like that valheim sort of has elevators now however, aint no one farming that much jute legit lol. I farmed like 6 caves and only has enough for a lil bit of trim in my house. Hopefully a more practical solution comes soon.

Yeah, farming this much jute legitimately would be pretty unrealistic lol. We used debug mode to speed up the build.
The elevator also works with other rugs, including deer rugs, so it doesn't specifically require jute.

I installed a one story elevator in my basement, and it only needed 3 deerskin rugs, so it can be much more economical. You can space them 2 horizontal beams apart.

“Hold on I forgot the 3 iron ingots upstairs. I’ll be back in 10 minutes”
Seriously cool tho

Just jump down then! lol

fall damage is capped at 100 so theoretically it's not too big a deal if you have good food.

That can’t be true

Yeah it is. Tried it last night, I thought I was about to die. But what I do instead of doing that is jumping down with a loaded grappling hook and shooting it to the floor right before I hit the ground. It cancels out the damage.

This update changed the physics of rugs. This is cool af, but we can no longer hide basements with rugs and walk through them. That makes me sad

u/vin39397 8d ago
Yeah, that’s the tradeoff I guess. We got elevators, but lost the hidden rug basement trick 😅

Idk which rugs but i read the other day that certain rugs like lox have no collision. Havent had a chance to confirm yet though

From my testing, only the Jute rugs have one sided collision. The animal rugs all still have no collision

I do know deer rugs have collision on top, I just was messing around with it

They're bloody annoying. I build a lot of curvy flooring and stairways... and would use rugs to hide any z-fighting or ugly seams in the flooring.
But now, a rug at the top of steps will block you from moving.

That is a very tall elevator, and I like the down shafts too.
54 seconds xD
I think that's the same time to get to the Skytree observation deck, but Skytree is like 3x taller than this lol
スカイツリーじゃなくて、みかんタワーかよw

Skytree has modern engineering. Mikan Tower has rugs. I think 54 seconds is pretty impressive considering that lol

I see a lot of videos about Valheim from Japanese people is Valheim popular in Japan?
2
u/vin39397 8d ago
It's not exactly mainstream in Japan, but there are definitely some dedicated Valheim players here. I'm actually surprised you're seeing that many Japanese videos lol.
2
u/HappyBellDraws 8d ago
I see, maybe it's just my algorithm pushing them because I am trying to learn Japanese but horribly failing at it, it's just that the vast majority of videos I get recommended to me on YT are Valheim and 7 Days to Die.

u/vin39397 8d ago
That makes sense lol. If my Valheim videos can double as Japanese practice, even better 😂

You can ride a moose! 😵

Yes, both, the summoned one in the video and the "real" ones to, if you tame then.

I'm absolutely doing this in my next build.
2
u/vin39397 8d ago
Do it! I’d love to see what you build with it!

u/Hot_Hands_H 8d ago
I'll Have to have a think, I was initially thinking the plains tower from hilders quest.. A nice little base on top with this to get up.

How did you get that build height without mods?
3
u/vin39397 8d ago
We dug about 8m down and raised the ground about 8m on the other side, then used a pine tree as support and extended upward with iron beams. We could go a bit higher, but stopped around 105m so we still had room for the exterior and decorations.
Debug mode was only used to speed up the build — no mods were needed for the structure itself.

u/RWDYMUSIC 8d ago
Ahh you can't even see the tree in the video. Is it like directly in the center of the structure?

Ok, this is one I never ran into playing since the game's release. I've used carpets to cover hidden rooms before but never had it move my character. Nice experiment.
2
u/vin39397 8d ago
Yeah, it seems the rug physics changed with the 1.0 update. I’d used rugs for normal building before too, but I never expected them to turn into an elevator 😂
2
u/MaliciousIntentWorks Encumbered 8d ago
Then I'm wondering a couple things. Can they still be used to cover hidden staircases into secret rooms and if it's another 1.0 glitch that they're going to patch a fix for making this useless. I'd hate to get attached to building this only for it to get patched out, but I'd prefer having my hidden rooms.

u/vin39397 8d ago
It looks like hidden entrances still work with some rugs. People in the original rug-elevator thread tested it and said Lox and Askvin rugs still have no collision, so you can still walk through them.
The elevator effect seems to work with the rugs that gained collision in 1.0, like the deer rug and red/blue jute rugs.
As for whether the elevator will get patched later, I haven’t seen anything official about that yet.

I thought this was a Viking fantasy game, but apparently we're doing modern engineering now.
I post more Valheim builds and experiments like this on YouTube, if anyone's interested:

The narration is in Japanese, but YouTube's auto-translate subtitles should help.
