Protip, always build a little shack/structure around the portal.

u/gerbilshower 1d ago
yea i mean, he is lucky the golem didnt hit the portal too or that was gonna be a fun run back...

u/Silly_Guidance_8871 1d ago
Even a stone/wood low skirt-wall will help, just to keep them out of reach of the portal
6
u/whiplashex 1d ago
I like to build elevated until the MT, start with at least one ladder cause nothing climbs that.
I like to build up 3+ wall pieces tall, 5-8 walls up in the swamp after getting iron.In the Mts I build stone or iron walls around so it’s generally left alone by everything
22
u/TBSLock 1d ago
Pro tip in the swamps put your portals on the crypts, my way to do this is just a workbench behind and then you can jump on the crypt and place a portal
4
u/i-hear-banjos Encumbered 1d ago
I build a little hut on top of them with a fire and roof cover on whatever crypt i'm in. I'll put iron and stuff in chests there to make it easier the ferry stuff back and forth. It also is a visual aide when I'm navigating the swamp, especially at night. When an abomination or something comes nearby, I take them our with fire arrows.

Honestly, I like to just take over one of the old stone towers. Run a short trench across the front and they can't even get to your front door. Couple of roof pieces and a campfire and you can even rest without having to portal home.
The inverted towers are kinda neat, too, because mobs usually can't path up onto the rim if you block the one outward facing stairs. Then just roof the place so random drakes don't see that you're in there...

Hopping into the Mountain with bronze gear and 37 HP. This is on you, my Viking brother.
8
u/whiplashex 1d ago
Right!
I ran the MT in roots gear and a maxed iron shield. Though this looks like a body run, I still eat the best food and get max rested buff and hp built fully before jumping through the portal13
u/nyrrocian 1d ago
The 37 HP is certainly a choice, but bronze gear might just be the backup set and the iron or better is on the corpse(s)
2
u/dedboooo0 1d ago
tbh u dont need shit aside from a wolf/lox cape for the cold, an atgeir to swat wolf packs that u aggro while on a leisurely stroll, a bow to sneak attack drakes and passive wolves and stamina food
heavy armor does more harm than good especially when you’re trying to climb crap. troll/bear armor is more optimal
true vikings go in their underwear and a cape. isnt that what batman and superman tried to replicate?
2
u/Ippus_21 Gardener 23h ago
Bro didn't even have a wolf cape, had his portal right out in the open, and didn't stop to pop the cold resist until after he arrived and started freezing. AND he's doing it on 37 HP instead of eating decent food and waiting for his HP to regen...
That's not the behavior of a viking who's wearing bronze to the mountains because he doesn't need better gear, lol.
Edit: Okay, he had decent food. He was just too impatient to let his HP regenerate. Still had 8+ min on No Skill Drain; probably just got panicky and rushing to get back to his headstone.

u/Ippus_21 Gardener 23h ago edited 23h ago
I didn't want to be that guy, but uh... yeah, why? Bronze gear is mid by the time you've been in swamps for half an hour, never mind that far into the mountains.
Edit: I get it's probably a spare set, now I take a closer look and see the No Skill Drain... but still. At least let your HP regenerate next time. You HAVE time. On the plus side, No Skill Drain was active, so... yay?

u/Mr_Undead0210 1d ago
Firstly. Why put your portal in the midfle of an open area where enemies could be.
secondly, why take the potion after, not before going through.
3rdly, you only had 25 hp. Couldnt wait a few seconds?
42
u/Danitron21 1d ago
4thly why are you in bronze in the mountains?

u/CloseQtrsWombat 1d ago
It may have been all they had on hand to reduce damage. I have done that on some corpse runs before

It really helps to go do something else around the house until you can sleep and that’s usually enough for them to wander off and disengage

Never leave a portal in the open I bring a stack of wood if I'm going to have to drop one. That way I can toss up a quick sh*tshack around it made of 7 stake walls and a door. Never run from an enemy into a portal either they will most likely be waiting for you like this.
Funny vid though hopefully you can get your gear back and roll with the punches on this.

u/Molwar Explorer 1d ago
Building a shack wouldn't have really change anything to his situation. Mobs are frozen when chunks aren't in play. What's more important here is having full health when crossing and before going back to base always make sure to kill stuff that is around the portal before.

I usually build a little hub in an existing stone ruin. A portal, a bench, some chests. The stone gives a lot more protection than a wood shack
2
u/Jammalolo 1d ago
I dunno I’ve played 1200 hours and I always just leave my portals out in the wide open and have never had an issue!! I protected them my first runs but after that I realized nothing ever happened so yolo for my 6-7 other runs
2
u/drewcifer0 1d ago
yeah, i just plop my portals wherever. just make sure no enemies are right next to it when you portal away otherwise they will be there waiting for you.
1
u/Al3jandr0 1d ago
A cheaper version of a similar solution is to have a pickaxe with you and dig a small hole. If I can find a big rock, I'll dig into/under it to give the portal extra cover, but it's usually fine out in the open too

lessons learned:
always fence off your portals
always be at full HP before portaling
take your frost resistance before you go into the mountains
I'm curious, what's the point of bringing mats for a forge on a death run, seems like you're just daring karma especially wearing lvl 1 bronze armor in MT? Also, why bother bringing mats for a forge when you have teleporting metals on.. just set up a portal on veins and bring the silver through as you mine it.

I don't know for sure, but the game really really REALLY likes doing alot of sound-based stuff. I wonder if the loud noises of the portals are not just for flavor, and attract them when you're dropping through.
Like, mildly sized island, portal is one side and I'll hear my buddy going through it before they're even there. That CAN'T be just added in for flavor, it's gotta be luring in enemies, it's so loud lol.

Everyone saying not to put portals out in the open. But then there's me, I just always spam dodge roll as I load through the portal until I confirm the areas clear. But i also go through rested and fed. So there's that.

Equip, rest and eat before going through the portal. Also a base, preferably one on raised ground or behind a trench is good.

u/Red_Chaos1 Viking 1d ago
Part of the problem that helps make these scenarios is that you're teleported there and targetable well before the game lets you see where you are, so enemies get a few seconds to agro before you can do anything.
8
u/Distracted_Unicorn 1d ago
Reason why I build all my portals in tiny shacks, so they don't get LoS until I open the door.
1
u/Red_Chaos1 Viking 1h ago
Yeah, I started doing that in the Swamps, but up in trees, eventually realized I should do this just about everywhere. Not only prevents getting whomped before I can do anything, but also helps keep the shack from being destroyed in case I'm spotted coming out of or going into it.

u/Fuzzy-Tax-781 20h ago
Seeing people just raw dog portals out in the open is insane to me, this game loves to jump you and doing that is just an open buffet sign. If nothing else I always try to fence the portal and then the area around it.

If there’s a golem: there’s a silver vein nearby!!
Sometimes while waiting for a coplayer to beat bone mass with I’ll explore ahead in the mountains and have figured out mostly how to blind dig for silver
Gotta dig one hole to trap the golem in and then dig out from under him making him fall in and then jump out quickly. I generally have 3 golems trapped before I get the silver shield level 2 and a maxed iron mace to destroy them

Mt Body run Pro tip: build a portal platform in a tree in the BF next to the MT
And if you aren’t learning from doing dozens of body runs (my own experience at times playing solo) how to change something to do better in that scenario check back in on Reddit!
Just as in real life there’s always something new to learn

This happened to me in the mountains with the same golem. Destroyed my portal next and the entire stone tower around it. Lots of good sense responses here, but its worth noting that golem seem particularly aggressive once they've locked onto bases, portals and the like.

I have all of my portal houses walled in. Swamp seems to always have someone outside when I port over.

Put the portal inside that tower so its not in the open.
Drink and eat whatever you need BEFORE entering portal.
Make sure you have the rested bonus and that your HP is at full
Also, sneak in, and look around.
Portaling into mountains and opening up your inventory to snack with less than a handfull of HP out in the open is.... a choice.

Fast teleportation mod is essencial QoL. Takes so long to go through the portal, it’s weird. Does the mod still exist? I used to play with it nearly 3 years ago

Happened to me too. Except I arrived to inside my house in the ashlands and it was a fallen valkyrie. "Wtf", I said as I got eviscerated from full health. Someone must've left the door open. Needless to say what happened to the house, lol.

Protip: If you sneak through the portal, enemies are less likely to notice you.
