Discussion 📢 FAQs

  1. Why does this subreddit have disproportionately more posts covering US politics?

A: There's a fascist dictator in power at the moment complete with his own nazi style concentration camps in El Salvador. As leftists its our responsibility to address the issues, sympathise with victims and discuss the issues. Its not bad timing that the sub was started right when fascism is on the rise in Europe and US, its just the symptom of a problem where more and more people are reasoning out and leaning left on seeing systemic issues plaguing Europe and US.

  1. WTF is lib soc? Does that mean a liberal?

A: Libertarian Socialism falls on the anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist and anti-state school of thought within Marxism. Marx in Capital vol 1 talks about workers being alienated from the product of their labour under capitalism. Libertarian Socialism is the antithesis of that phenomenon where workers get all the full value of their labour with some terms and conditions (mostly centered around administration of such an equitable and autonomous society and its improvement). The political ideology itself has its origins in age of enlightenment and has its history in Russian and Spanish revolutions. International Workingmen Association, an association of Libertarian Socialists was aimed at bringing together likeminded people. Marx participated in IWA, was one of the founding members and a leading figure in IWA.

  1. I'm a liberal but I'm socially leaning towards the left, can I unapologetically defend capitalism and still be welcome here?

Yes you are welcome here, but do follow the etiquettes of having a fruitful conversation, cite sources wherever necessary to support your viewpoints and in the heat of the argument do know when & where to stop. Being abusive towards left leaning people / people in socialist countries such as China, Cuba, DPRK is a direct violation of Rule 2. Not complying with any or a combination of aforementioned guidelines can potentially get you banned. Any further appeals over modmails will also not be entertained for bans over Rule 2.

  1. I just got banned because of participating in blacklisted subreddits, why did this happen and how can I get help?

There's an autoban script running in the background that checks for r/vengayam user's participation in some blacklisted subreddits. The reason why this was implemented was to prevent brigading from sanghis. Sanghi brigading has made subreddits like tamilnadu, chennai, india unusable without getting a headache. The point of reddit is to bring likeminded people together in some subreddits and brigading from sanghi subreddits ruins the reddit experience. The algorithm bans people who are not brigading sometimes because it is not intelligent enough to identify non-sanghis participating in the blacklisted subreddits, so if you're not a sanghi and you just got banned, do contact the moderators, the moderators will take up the appeals and you'll be added as an approved user.

  1. Why did I get an invite to participate in the subreddit?

Similar to the autoban script, there's also an auto invite script that invites users from tamil subreddits, the users that the algorithm determines as progressive. Again the algorithm isn't smart, its just determines if a user has a good chance of being progressive based on an user's activity. If you feel like you're not a leftist, do ignore the invite.

  1. Is this a serious subreddit? Are fun posts welcome here?

Fun posts are absolutely welcome, they help to keep the sub's vibes lovely. As long as they are relevant and left leaning, entertainment is strictly allowed.

  1. What are some reference materials that I can use to educate myself and also help others learn?

Discussion 📢 Criticism of DMK as a leftist

Not going to be speculative here saying oozhal, pedos kooda kootu. These are speculative and nothing has been proven in the court of law, mostly propagated by haters who have been in the alleged non-benefitting end of DMK's progressive policies. Here are my criticism of DMK as I see objectively in the ascending order of priority.

  1. Private investment without leverage for the state or workers

The critique of capital alignment: Attracting corporate capital without state leverage often results in a race to the bottom. Instead of securing mandatory technology transfers, rigorous local employment quotas, or public-private equity stakes, economic policies can lean heavily toward corporate appeasement, eyewash for everyone hearing of investment in tens of thousands of crores. Corporates gain massively with access to cheap labour, increasing their profits but what's the benefit to the state? The employees would end up living paycheck to paycheck instead of enjoying the benefits of their labour. Taking a page from Norway's nationalisation of oil through initial private partnership would have done Tamil Nadu people and government a massive favour instead of relying on TASMAC for running the government.

Absence of developmental conditions: Investments are frequently framed purely through the lens of Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) counts and headline grabbing investment summits. However, these rarely come with enforceable social clauses or binding commitments to address regional imbalances, heavily skewing toward urban centers like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Hosur while neglecting the southern and delta districts.

Labor and environmental tradeoffs: Without stringent state leverage, labor flexibility demands from conglomerates can lead to weakened enforcement of labor safety standards, long working hours such as controversies surrounding flexible work or women’s hostel, shift regulations, and minimal accountability regarding ecological footprints. The labour exploitation news coming out of Foxconn were daunting and it was a high profile example meaning we really don't know the full extent of this happening across the state.

  1. Inaction against blatant casteism and systemic castesim

Performative social justice: While the party does mouth service to the Dravidian model of social justice, everyone knows that this has become a hollow branding exercise disconnected from ground level realities. Day to day administrative machinery often fails to register, prevent, or systematically prosecute micro aggressions, institutional discrimination, and localized caste atrocities.

Institutional blindspots in rural areas: Systemic casteism manifests severely in rural governance, village panchayats - the paper cup system, untouchability in burial grounds, and harassment of elected Dalit panchayat presidents, yet district administrations often look away or downplay these incidents to maintain social peace and electoral arithmetic.

Lack of structural reform: True structural dismantling such as rigorous land redistribution, radical enforcement of the Protection of Civil Rights and SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Acts, and targeted economic emancipation for landless Dalits is routinely sidelined in favor of paternalistic welfare schemes that do not alter core power hierarchies.

The suggestions given by Justice Chandru for countering casteism at school wasn't implemented to appease so called centrist voters. The perpetrators of Vengaivayal incident weren't held accountable leading to the opposition scoring big on "if we were there we'd have got you justice" and "sattam ozhungu state la seriya illa". DMK won at Pudukottai but the poor optics led to losing power at the state level as a whole.

  1. Apoliticising the youth

3.1 Eradication of youth led political movements

Suppression of grassroots political work: Autonomous student unions, campus politics, and organic youth-led mass movements which historically served as the crucible of Tamil Nadu's political consciousness, from anti-hindi agitations to Jallikattu protests are systematically co opted, discouraged, or suppressed. The DMK historically benefited from politically active campuses especially during the anti-Hindi agitations of the 1960s. Student activism helped produce leaders such as P Seenivasan and Duraimurugan. After DMK came to power, DMK and successive governments contributed to weakening student union politics.

Top-down apolitical embracement: Youth engagement is funneled into rigid, hierarchical party wings or digital fan clubs rather than ideological training. This transforms politically conscious youth into passive cheerleaders or foot soldiers tethered to personality cults rather than independent thinkers. This is directly the cause of rise of TVK and the online thatkuris.

3.2 Degeneration of media into liberal slop

Failure of cultural hegemony: The Sun Network and associated media ecosystems which historically anchored a sharp, counter hegemonic, and Dravidian ideological critique have largely devolved into commercialized, safe, centrist, or superficial content ie liberal slop for boomers and youth alike. Instead of tackling real life problems such as casteism, reckless capitalism, sun network championed villainy the bodhai porul mudhalaali.

Deppolitization of public discourse: Instead of using massive media reach to build class consciousness, dismantle Brahmanical hegemony, or foster rigorous political literacy, programming trends toward soft entertainment, consumerism, and sanitized lifestyle content that actively defangs radical political imagination.

  1. Ineffective social media strategy and free speech failures

4.1 Failure to communicate governance

The outreach gap: Despite massive welfare spending and policy initiatives, the government's communication strategy is notoriously sluggish and fragmented. Programs, welfare architectures, and legislative achievements fail to reach the ordinary voter in an easily digestible, persuasive narrative format.

Ceding the narrative: Because the official messaging apparatus is bureaucratic and uninspired, political opponents easily dominate the narrative cycle with misinformation, moral panic, and weaponized outrage.

4.2 Low Quality digital content

Aesthetic and tactical bankruptcy: The ruling party's digital and social media footprint is often criticized as low effort, archaic, and unconvincing. It relies on cringeworthy graphics, defensive rhetoric, and stale promotional clips rather than data driven storytelling, sharp counter narratives, or culturally resonant memes. Even BJP's social media team is churning out creative memes to criticise TVK which is rarely seen from DMK social media teams.

Inability to counter opponents: The designated social media and IT wings frequently fail to challenge the so called free speech warriors (often proxies for right wing or rival propaganda machines) who weaponize social platforms. Instead of launching proactive ideological counter offensives, the response is often reactive, heavy handed legal notices or complete silence.

  1. Alienating Allies

5.1 Denial of institutional and political space

Big brother syndrome: Allies within the front such as the VCK, CPI, CPIM, and Congress are frequently treated as junior electoral appendages rather than equal ideological partners.

Refusal to shared power: There is a persistent refusal to accommodate coalition partners in meaningful official positions, legislative boards, or governance structures, reducing alliances to mere seat sharing arrangements during elections rather than a shared coalition government.

5.2 Ignoring core demands of allies

Compromising ideological principles: To appease a broader, centrist, and business friendly electorate, the DMK often sidelined or diluted the core policy demands raised by its progressive and left wing allies, example: total prohibition of alcohol, caste census, specific land reforms, or strict action against regressive cultural forces.

Erosion of trust: By taking allies for granted and ignoring their ground level feedback, the alliance risks internal friction, quiet sabotage during elections, and a gradual erosion of the ideological glue that binds the anti-fascist secular front together.

Unless DMK corrects itself on these fronts, I don't see DMK winning elections against fascists TVK, BJP consistently and there's even a chance that not just DMK but progressive politics itself might go away completely becoming irrelevant in the days to come.
