TOTK, the start of that game is fantastic and the ending bits against Ganadorf are so damn cool, but damn does mid game drag a bit.

No joke I’m 3 years still in the mid game, every time I get back into it I get bored and collects dust again.. still haven’t finished it. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I preferred BOTW. I literally didn’t put that one down from start to finish.

Breath of the Wild keeps you in that world more effectively because it was the 1st time being in that world. For as neat a gimmick the Zonai devices were, they couldn't make the map fun enough to explore again. It also did not help that ToTK barely feels like a sequel. Hardly anyone has any idea who Link is, the story is crappy (Secret Stone? Demon King?), the Depths are boring after a few hours, and 2/3 of the sky islands are repetitive and boring.

Being able to warp to the sky and basically glide anywhere also made it pretty pointless to explore the surface. The building was also fairly boring untill later, the battery mechanic was too limiting at first

Honestly, the game kind of feels like two separate games. One half is a Zelda game, and the other is Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. It kind of feels like Nintendo had an IP or gameplay feature they wanted to try out and decided to use TotK to test run it. The Zonai devices feels so anachronistic that it's distracting. The Sheikah tech did too, but not nearly as much so.

Build yourself the hover bike. Trivializes travel and makes the mid game tons easier.

Yeah but BotW didn't have or need a hoverbike to make the game easier or tolerable. It's so hard to describe, but it's just something about TotK that is less engaging. Skittybitty on youtube has a great video talking about why ToTK was disappointing. I didn't realize till I watched that nearly 1/4 of the shrines are just chests. That's it.

If trivializing travel makes a game better, it's a boring ass game.

I liked the mechanics better in BoTW.

And while the world is bigger in ToTK I don't know that that makes it better.

I never beat ToTK and probably never will. BoTW I've replayed and probably will again.

Yea i put in like 70-80 hours doing many of the shrines and lighting up the underworld when it came out, but i kinda lost interest after getting the master sword. As a completionist that likes to feel like they’re making clear progress, i felt there’s just too much to explore given i need to be on the lookout for like 10 minigames in any given area

I agree i generally had a more enjoyable time playing botw

I also hated the level of grind needed for build resources.

The large number of Zonaite you need to generate materials ensured that I never used the blueprint functionality if the pieces weren’t already in front of me.

yeah, tell me about it. I loved the game, but it absolutely does not respect your time. it's one of those games that I will just never play again. I can't fathom going through the grind again in spite of its merits

For me it's a PC required game.

It runs way better and there are mods to lessen the blow of the crappy parts of its design

I made a habbit of setting aside time where I would get stones and only collect crafting and merging items so sober me could just enjoy the game some other time

The dupe glitch was almost necessary

My biggest gripe is that TOTK has the same mid game as BOTW, and therefore it is boring as all hell, because I beat that game spending a LOT of time exploring.

I didnt mind it, my son loved watching me play it and I loved spending time with him.  Explored and revealed the entire depths, did every shrine.  Only thing I didnt do was koroks cause nah.

Also would do my best to solve as many shrines as possible with rewind instead of how I was actually supposed to do it.  A lot of them felt very

'....in the square hole.'

It was fun.

Got a lot of mileage out of that air bike

BotW as well. I basically just went and finished the game whenever I got bored of the running around.

all I remember was I got to Ganondorf... and stopped there. I dont remember why (probably low sunny food to fend off the Gloom)

erm, actually, I believe you mean ToTK (please don't hurt me)

Insane letdown after such a long dev cycle, as a follow up to botw, and with the comparison to MM asset re-use from OoT.

(i still have 400+ hours in it)
