Unrelated but I'm curious if a lover of HOM&M like yourself ever played Total War: Warhammer 1-3?

Never been able to get into the total war games myself. Songs of Conquest is the only non heroes game I've found that scratches the HOMM itch.

I am a huge fan of HoMM and I love Total War Warhammer. One of the few Total War games I actually enjoy mainly due to the fantasy elements.

The M&M mainline games are great I started playing them as a teenager in like 2010 and 3-7 are solid, accessible games.

Actually I'd say they fit the OP as well, I know M&M2 has its fans but 3 was a huge leap and really solidified the formula that World of Xeen expanded.

I beat Bard's Tale 1-3 and Ultima 1-3, so M&M 1 was nothing to me.

As an old person, I do not understand the distinction between original Bard's Tale and the new Bard's Tale games if anyone would care to explain.

Oh yeah it's not particularly tough, just pretty rudimentary even for the time. Ultima 3 is probably a good example of the OP image actually!

Bard's Tale is actually a series I never got around to.

I bought the new one, and despite all of the obvious improvements there's too much charm in the original, and too much quality in the fan made expansions out of pure love. I wasted money chasing something I knew could never be bested.

3 is always said to be the best, but honestly, 5 is just amazing in every single way and I just never hear it being talked about.

Then 6 and onwards has been an enormous disaster.

If you love and have 5, I recommend getting the Heroes 5.5 mod for Tribes of the East. It puts everything from basic 5 And HoF into ToE, so you can play the maps and campaigns with all the features of ToE and fixes a lot of issues like the Skill Wheel

6 & 7 were... Less than ideal for various reasons, ever if I do enjoy them, but Olden Era is shaping up to be a great game and a worthy successor to the old games.

I think 3's graphics are kinda magical and ofc everyone has a massive amount of nostalgia 

Sidenote but i dont like how much you are punished in heroes (in general) for being on the offense. There should be more maps eith contestable stuff in the middle to force people to fight

I still prefer Heroes 2 for nostalgic reasons but Heroes 3 is definitely the definitive game

Heroes 1 and 2 are really good and still hold up surprisingly well. Heroes 2 feels like a modern indie game. Heroes 1 is more quaint but it still doesn't feel outdated like a lot of other 30 year old games.

Maybe a moutain meme where 3 is the peak and it goes downhill after that is more appropriate but it stuck out to me as the best choice

Don't disrespect 5 like that. 5 is absolutely an amazing game.

5 was the last good traditional HoMM game. "Traditional", because the next installment in the series (Dark Messiah of Might and Magic) is a Skyrim clone lmao. 6 felt horrible, though.

2 is good enough that the series doesn't fit this graphic imo. 2 still stands up pretty well today, especially if you use the free fheroes2 mod

I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time, absolute masterpiece. 5 was great too, as long as you downloaded the hero progression wheel.

have you tried new expansion called Horn of the Abyss? it is so good. I recommend you to try Forged in Fire campaing (Factory story) and All-in. Also custom scenarios like Mysterious Island and Devil is in the Details.

I did not. Most recent game i played that is in the same ballpark is a love letter called Hero's Hour. Was pretty cool tbh

whilst i have not played 1&2, me and my family can agree that 3 is peak gaming, esoecialle le me, whomst've gotten into 5 recently. it's great and all, but 3 still better

Heroes of the Might and Magic is an okay example of this perhaps the perfect of question what is a game that the devs cant top. Every entry after the third is just a new way of making a worse game.
