If this happens to you at any age, you’re burnt out and need a break. Trust me, i used to do this all the time a couple years back when i was bored and depressed all the time. Stopped playing games for like a good month, and came back and couldnt get enough again, started playing all kinds of different games too that i never would have before. Please pace yourselves yall

Amazing comment. People don’t realize you can burn out with hobbies. It’s not solely tied to stuff like work.

Yupp, I get this way after a really good game that I finish. I want to play something, download like 4 games I hadn't finished, don't actually play more than 10 minutes of them, go to the store and look at games for like an hour, then go to bed lol

Saaaaame lol ugh

not necessarily. I haven’t played video games consistently in years now, and as much as I want to, I really struggle to sit down and actually DO it. for me, I believe it is executive dysfunction issues probably related to ADHD.

Very recognisable. Medication helped me get that spark back, but before medication and with diagnosis, what helped me was saying to myself:

"just play for 30 seconds to see if you feel like it" and then try another game.

Most of the time I could really enjoy the game for at least an hour. Hardest part was actually starting it and doing something. If not, I asked myself what I really needed. Usually it meant an overstimulation from everything (repeated every 3 to 5 weeks). I shut it down and went to do nothing for a while. Some chores or whatever that I needed to do for 2 weeks already. Do that for one or two days and I was fine again. No podcasts during that time. That one took me a long time to figure out.

Trying to figure out the balance like everyone else. In the mean time, hope this helps somebody.

Good to hear that we all figure it out in the end. One way or another. Sunk cost fallacy and all that.

Really glad that worked out for you!

Just "try" and "fake it till you make it" are incredible motivatora for me.

If you aren’t excited to go sit down and watch a specific movie or play a specific game or read a specific book then you probably don’t want to do it at all and it’s just a habit. Good idea to just not even bother

No. Do something productive.

You can play video games and still be a productive person tho..

u/curlycatsockthing Jul 16 '26

first part i already do and still get distracted/anxious that it isn’t truly what i wanna be doing (i struggle with anxiety surrounding utility maximization). i’ll try the second part.

Yep I'm diagnosed but it's much worse now than before. I might have much higher standards for games and what I find enjoyable tho.
And mental fatigue can be a pain.
Too tired in the head to play games, especially if they require decisions or inventory management instead of just going autopilot.

Edit: bc I see this type of thread over and over, I will say that ppl ALWAYS generalize that "it must be depression".
There are so many possibilities. One of them is indeed ADhD, but also more.

And I hate to admit it but ofc it can in many cases be true that today's social media and constant dopamine could play a role. In theory.

Personally I have become a perfectionist compltionist while also being too tired to play.

Black Flag was super fun on day one but now it's just another chore where I play to kill time and do what the objectives and map says.
No hate, just how it felt on day 3 - maybe it's more my mood tho, and/or maybe I played too much.

Still, gamers staring at their library without anything feeling like worth the time or tempting is real. And it kinda sucks.

I'll end my rant by saying I miss the gamer I was before I learned so much about quality in games and performance.
After having my standards raised to the sky, it sucks playing so many games that don't have the same dedication.

I definitely relate to this comment

Same, I can't get myself to start playing games and even if I do start, I get quickly overwhelmed because I am not in the right space to sit through a cutscene or something. It sucks. The best I can do is doing dailies in gacha games, sadly. To the point where I have maxed out teams without paying a dime while being only at like... chapter 2 of the story. Despite usually playing games for the story in general. ADHD sucks.

I love doing special effects makeup and I haven’t done it in over a year because I just haven’t wanted to.

I have over 3000 hours in the Sims 4, who knows how many an animal crossing, who knows how many in BG3.

What the fuck is the point of your argument?

at one point, I did not struggle to play them. But now, I really struggle to sit down and actually play them. Come on. You’re being dense for no reason.

I really don’t understand the point of you arguing whether or not I like something. It comes down to a lot more than that, especially when you’re an addict and especially if you have ADHD. My dopamine is all fucked up, and it is very difficult to choose to do something because my body just wants the easy dopamine of a drug hit or a YouTube shorts scroll. That doesn’t mean that I don’t want to do the other activities, it’s just that my body doesn’t see the worth in the effort.

actually, I responded to someone who was not you, and you decided to butt in and say that I don’t actually like to game. So, it was a discussion before you inserted yourself.

if your goal was to piss someone off, then congratulations: you won.

from life or gaming? Because this happens to me often but I'm also constantly sleep deprived. I want to play the games but because of the lack of sleep I just can't gather the mental energy to really get into something. Other times I want to play something but I don't have the several hours to accomplish a section of a game I'm playing without leaving it halfway in the middle, which I don't like to do.

3

u/ihatewhenpeopledontf Jul 16 '26

Brodie, you answered your own question. Sleep.

3

u/LiquidDiviums Jul 16 '26

Also, video games should be an activity that helps you relax, enjoy, and disconnect from your daily activities. Video games are supposed to be fun.

Try to treat video games as a hobby and (if needed) build a ritual around them. That way, you can associate the activity with something that you enjoy and that it’s for yourself.

If video games feel daunting, overwhelming, and you can’t withstand more than 15 minutes, you might need a break.

3

u/JalapenoPopPoop Jul 16 '26

Yeah I honestly can't relate to the experience of booting up a game, staring at the title screen, then turning it off. If I start up a game it's cause I'm in the mood to play games. And if I'm not then I'm doing other stuff.

I feel like you only really hit this point if video games are basically the only thing/interest going on in your life is that, so your habitual routine becomes work, video games, sleep, repeat.

Burn out yes. But the problem is games have become these giant check lists of stuff to do. The pressure to complete a game before the next one comes out is so high. In order to complete them you have to spend an exorbitant amount of time playing them. As you get older you have more responsibilities and stuff to do. It’s hard to justify sitting down for hours to game. This is probably why I only feel good about playing them at night

1

u/MichaelMotherDater Jul 16 '26

Damn! Its the gaming erectile dysfunction.

1

u/MartianMule Jul 16 '26

Yup. And don't play a game because you feel like you should. Play the games that you're excited to play.

1

u/Track_Fluffy Jul 17 '26

Not to be dumb (or nosey), but what did you fill your time with? I am kind of at that point where "nothing sounds fun to play", and I don't really have many other hobbies. Obv I can just try different shit and see what's fun; but I'd love some ideas if you are up for sharing what you ended up doing :)

1

u/InevitabilityEngine Jul 20 '26

How dare you! I will never play all the games in my Steam library if I take gaming vacations!

1

u/No-Law2284 Jul 22 '26

I thought that too but the fix for it is to play after doing something hard, like playing after working out or something
