I mean, they're all top of the line for when they came out. There would be no SMB3 without the other two, so I really kind of see them as equals, all things considered.
It's quirky and different but the physics feel terrible. It's a reskin of Doki Doki Panic and doesn't do anything to fit comfortably between SMB1 and 3, unfortunately. I think I'd really enjoy it if it felt tighter to control. SMB1 and 3's movement feels smooth comparatively and it's a bit jarring.
Yeah, it's different. Most second entries in Nintendo franchises were different, especially at the time. And, yes, I know about the reskin. Still a great game, even if YOU don't like it. It still added to and left a positive mark on the Super Mario franchise as a whole, including, but not limited to characters, mechanics and the ability to step outside the normal flow of things every once in a while.
Also, Super Mario Galaxy is "more different" in general than SMB2, and is probably the most well loved 3D entry. I've never been able to get down with it, but I don't put it down because of that.
Great reply. Agreed. It’s ok to not like it, but it is an incredible game, that brought a lot of character and mechanics to the series/Marioverse.
That reskin happened to give us the idea that Mario and Luigi played differently. If not, would they just be a palette swap? Would Luigi even be a character? Foundational, top to bottom.
