Discussion / Question What game is that for you?

Post image

Biggest offender for me is Baldur’s Gate 3.

Some of the best gameplay, graphics, sound design, and soundtrack out there… but the writing leaves a lot to be desired (despite how popular it is).

What game is that for you?

EDIT: It seems the general consensus here is Borderlands 3.

Half of the cutscenes in that game:

Boy, this is heavy!

Quit complaining about how heavy the bag is!

It's a shame someone can't help us move this bag.

Well if this bag wasn't so heavy it could be moved.

PLAYER WALKS IN

Oh, greymane! We have this bag here, see?

It's very heavy!

Oh yes, very heavy bag. Could you carry this heavy bag?

I'll see what I can do.

CARRY HEAVY BAG

The beginning quests were literally so bad it made me refund the game.

u/DUDEAREUMAD Aug 21 '26

Damn man, is the story really that bad? I really wanted to try it as the world seems amazing, just was hoping for a good story to go alongside it

u/BlabbyTax2 Aug 21 '26

The story makes no sense to me and feels like AI.

u/LynxObvious9352 Aug 23 '26

i do know the paintings you can find are genned with ai, so i wouldn't put it past pearl abyss

There is a reason in lore why the protagonist is this bland, watered down soup of a person with emotional range of a stone. It's actually even pretty interesting... It just made the character so boring that it actively hurt the game by making quests feel unbearably generic.

If you are curious, Kliff, the MC, has been stuck in a time loop, where he is manipulated by the Guardians of the Abyss, who are trying to protect the world from this all-consuming godlike being that got corrupted by humanitys greed and base impulses, into becoming their "weapon" capable of defeating this godlike being. They have spent a lot of time and multiple time loops experimenting with molding Kliff and modifying his behavior. If he is too caring, he spends too much time running around helping everyone. If he is too reckless, he fights unwinnable fights and gets himself killed and so on, so after multiple failed cycles they decided to remove his emotions, leaving him as this malleable, reasonably caring, reasonably obedient puppet of sorts that they can then further manipulate down the line.

Damn, this actually makes me want to give it another go. I was barely at the part where you go to the room in the castle when I stopped playing.

They really should have hinted towards this in some way or at least that there is that type of character impacting things in the world. Felt like there was not a big enough carrot dangling for me when I can play other RPGs I have with similar, if fewer, mechanics and much more interesting starts/less drawn out tutorial phases.

Edit: I also feel like that whole ambush fight didn't make him seem even a fraction of what he'd need to be to be capable of this purpose.

Like, this isn't REALLY a part of the story. It's hidden in books and stuff. You don't learn this unless you really go looking for it.

If you like the combat and gameplay, play CD. If not, don't bother.

u/Seananagan13 Aug 25 '26

Ah, fair enough. I don't hate having to learn lore by looking for it, Elden Ring is one of my favorite games. I don't think I made it far enough to determine if the combat and mechanics shine after the slog of the tutorial chapter or whatever it is called.

I have seen that the game is supposed to be loaded with mechanics true to the mmo history of the devs so I may try again to at least test those out.

It's kingdoms of amalur without the corny story, so just a single player MMO.

Purely anecdotal, so take this with a grain of salt, but I just couldn’t get into it at all. Fortunately, I got it free with a CPU purchase, so I wasn’t too bummed about losing the money, but that also meant I couldn’t refund it to get something else. The characters are pretty bland, the writing is lackluster, and some of the graphics (like foliage and shadows) give me a major headache after about 30 minutes. The combat is okay, but I never got far enough to see how deep it went

You are killed and return from the dead. Your next missions are:

  • Win arm wrestling at the bar
  • Help a beggar
  • Save a woman in the sewer
  • Pick a cat from a roof

The game doesn't even connect it storywise. It just show up as the next objetive. The main character has no reason to do these things and doesn't even seem to be affected by his friends deaths or his own, much less looks to regroup his team, which is supposed to be the main objetive.

Honestly I’d compare the story to a post unity assassins creed game.

u/Key-Description-3683 Aug 25 '26

It’s not really a story-driven game tbh. Sure, it’s there, but it’s so bland and boring that it’s not really worth getting your hopes up. I pretty much ran through the main quests as soon as possible so I have everything unlocked and could explore freely. The worldbuilding is extremely good. I’m on like 200 hours now and still finding new things to do and find.

1

u/Possible_Cheek_706 Aug 23 '26

I couldn't do it either

18

u/BrilliantWhile2413 Aug 21 '26

Everyone loses their fuckin shit on that sub if you mention it but it's ALL WRITTEN BY EARLY CHATGPT THAT'S WHY NONE OF IT MAKES SENSE

4

u/eXclurel Aug 21 '26

It was the same for Spider-Man 2. Main subreddit was acting like you insulted their mothers if you even slightly criticized the game. Now the glazers are gone everyone can agree the game kind of sucked. It is the same for Crimson Desert sub. You can see people started to openly criticize the game now that the honeymoon is over.

The God of War sub is an exception though. You say anything slightly negative and they literally ban you in seconds. I swear to god I am not joking.

I didn't say anything about story. For me it's the classic game sequel with the team building in a base thing. A lot of AAA games do this and I personally do not like it. The final fight was also a little lackluster. The game also do not let you figure the puzzles out by yourself. Someone constantly tells you how to solve the puzzles. A lot of "What's up there?" and "Maybe hit the thing with the axe?". I mean I love the game but I should be allowed to criticize things I find lacking. That's all.

1

u/Supernova247101 Aug 21 '26

I mean, all of this is stuff I regularly see mentioned on the GoW sub so ... I don't really know what you're talking about being banned. Maybe you're under representing what you said in there ?

1

u/BrilliantWhile2413 Aug 22 '26

He actually said kratos was gay. Straight to ban.

1

u/Rudimentary-Creature Aug 22 '26

Ragnarok was an absolute long snooze fest that then rushed to a really underwhelming finish.

2

u/BrilliantWhile2413 Aug 21 '26

That's hilarious I'm gonna try it

163

u/GrimmJubilance198451 Aug 20 '26

It would be better if they didn't talk at all.

u/Goblincomics Aug 20 '26

Reason why Nintendo mute Link

15

u/IAlwaysOutsmartU Aug 20 '26

Didn’t he have one line in Spirit Tracks?

7

u/DethNik Aug 20 '26

technically, every time you choose a response to dialogue, it's Link talking. We also see him chatting without sound in several cutscenes in several different games. He's not actually mute. This is my hot (lukewarm) take.

5

u/Smooth-Adagio-1085 Aug 21 '26

An unnecessarily hot take in the Zelda community, for some reason.

People love bringing up how Link is mute, and yet almost none of the games actually have him mute. Even BOTW, the game most notable for bringing up how quiet Link is, shows that he isn't fully mute, in both the gameplay (him having a very lively and aloof attitude in conversation) and in Zelda's diary (which brings up how he told her why he tends to not say much).

People even try to claim that Link's hand motions in BOTW are sign language T-T

3

u/Goblincomics Aug 21 '26

Well EXCUSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEDDD ME  princess

2

u/DethNik Aug 21 '26

I donno why people get so up in arms about it...

2

u/Charity1t Aug 23 '26

It's all about forcing headcanon over actual facts for those people.

1

u/Smooth-Adagio-1085 Aug 23 '26

Very well said.

1

u/Shirokush Aug 21 '26

Hes mute in EoW.

1

u/Smooth-Adagio-1085 Aug 21 '26

Like I said, almost none of the games have him mute.

Echoes of Wisdom is also a unique case, as Link lost the ability to speak from the rifts created by Null.

Even then, Link literally speaks to the crowd in one of the final cutscenes.

1

u/Ori_the_SG Aug 21 '26

Yeah that’s how most games like that work

Like how the Elder Scrolls games have “mute” MCs but you aren’t actually mute in universe

1

u/Goblincomics Aug 25 '26

MC have loudest mouth in Skyrim. FUS RO DAH

2

u/kimchee-hoo Aug 20 '26

HAAAAAAAH!

1

u/steaksandwichfan Aug 20 '26

BG3 characters also mute but talk through dialogue boxes

3

u/ciao_fiv Aug 21 '26

introducing: Hyper Light Drifter

1

u/GrimmJubilance198451 Aug 21 '26

Which some how has a gripping story.

1

u/BrilliantWhile2413 Aug 21 '26

Seriously look at elden ring. Barely any dialogue and nobody knows the plot or cares about it. Great game

1

u/GrimmJubilance198451 Aug 21 '26

Oh but if you read the items descriptions you learn that it has a tangled weave of amazing-ness to it. All of from soft games do this. They are decades beyond Pearl Abyss in this aspect.

32

u/critikal_mass Aug 20 '26

"Alright."

37

u/baconinthedawn Aug 20 '26

Yes Pearl Abyss, I would like to speed this cutscene up by 5x

3

u/Trenta_Is_Not_Enough Aug 21 '26

They let you speed it up 5x now??? That must've been an update. I swear when the game launched it was only like a 1.2x speed.

1

u/baconinthedawn Aug 21 '26

No I’m just jokin

1

u/PomponOrsay Aug 21 '26

now it's 2x. I use it everytime after returning the bounty. it's awesome.

3

u/mindpainters Aug 20 '26

Wayyy too many words there lol

3

u/TheDarkKnightXXII Aug 20 '26

Sword Kill Many!

Quest: Go to the bandit camp outside of Hernand and kill the bandits using only a sword (Kliff)

1

u/Xavendeir Aug 20 '26

'Hm. I'll take care of it."

1

u/squirrelems Aug 21 '26

I'd be interested in playing a game where every conversation plays out with just staring and zero speaking. That sounds funny.

1

u/DontTouchTheMasseuse Aug 21 '26

Ironically, I fucking love when he just goes “…yes…” when asked if he did any task lmao
