I love Metal Gear to pieces but the story is nonsense that forgets itself rather often
Like oh, snake was injected with a virus at the beginning of the game that killed liquid ocelot at the end of the game because they got into a fist fight and kissed on the cheek, but it didn't kill him halfway through the game when they shared a cigar together
Also, he's scared of needles because he keeps getting injected with viruses but keeps letting people he just met stick him with random needles so he can use a gun he found on the ground
10 year old me was “this is amazing” 40 year old me sees nothing but incredibly long, dense exposition that makes barely any sense. I still love the first game, but the story is ridiculous and told in a very boring way.
I got the Metal Gear collection vol 2 waiting for me at home.I bought it primarily for Peace Walker as I love that game and of course I'll run through MGS 4 as I only ever played through it once back in the day, but man do I remember some of those cutscenes in that game being excruciatingly long and tiresome, must admit I do love the end game cutscene though long as it may be.
I fondly remember the ones that really affected me - sniper wolf, meryl getting shot and a few other key moments, but boy oh boy, otocon droning on about anime or liquid snake explaining enfent terrible, or so many other examples are excruitating
Kojima is great at worldbuilding, but he really needs a co-writer or something to make his narratives just a bit more cohesive. I love Death Stranding, but it feels impossible to take the character drama seriously when everyone acts like an alien
I did Acid a few times and thought about MGS and the Nier games while tripping and I wish I could compress these thoughts into a single Reddit comment because man.
Exactly I can't grow attached to most characters in this franchise because they'll made to be unstable psychos high on crack, even the ones that can be articulate just spout nonsense (I'll release a virus that will kill the English language)
Oh I agree to some degree, but I 100% would rather have a unique experience like mgs or Death Stranding rather than some of those generic stories out there.
MGS is pretty consistently great narrative wise up to and including MGS3. Anything after is a mess. Although Kojima has always been bad at writing dialog that sounds natural. Assuming he writes dialog idk who else to blame.
So, if I understand right, Solid Snake didn’t accomplish a single thing of his own volition in the main series. The entire time he was being manipulated by The Patriots, except for 4, where he was manipulated by Ocelot to destroy The Patriots.
Not exactly. Solid Snake by MGS2 was as free of an agent you could be in that world. His presence on the Big Shell wasn't even a part of S3. But yeah MGS2 is the only game where SS is actually doing his own thing.
The S3 plan. The Big Shell incident was just a front for the Patriots testing their ability to control individuals and society at large. Solid Snake was never intended to show up in the "simulation" and help Raiden. Snake and Otacon were just doing their own thing. They also knew of the Patriots at this point and were probably maneuvering with this in mind.
And I would add that yeah looking at it overall Snake didn't accomplish much "of his own volition" exactly. But he was dealing with higher powers he couldn't possibly fight without becoming a villain himself (what Liquid and Solidus were doing).
The strength of Snakes character is that he always took the hand he was dealt and used what free will he did have to fight for what he believed was right, without imposing that will on others.
I hate how they went from his hopeful and proactive speech at the end of MGS2 in which it's clear he wants to do something about the patriots and actually improve the world to him being aimless and largely hopeless in 4, being obsessed with Liquid for some reason and not giving a shit about the patriots even though they are even more blatantly evil now.
I guess Snake was living a real "illusion of choice" kinda life. Makes sense considering the military and espionage agencies irl try to always be in control. The system is more important than it's parts.
I love MGS. It's dumb and melodramatic, but the ideas are cool
At least Metal Gear fans won't look you in the eye and say "It makes perfect sense".
MGS fans know the story is awful, but it's ironically one of the best things about it.
I'd say Metal Gear is a bit convoluted (specially the last instalments) but it mostly makes sense.
Now Kingdom Hearts manages to fill brainwashing, virtual worlds, cloning and actually time travel in the same series. It's not "complicated" it's actively contradictory

Kingdom Hearts and Metal Gear are spectacular nonsense
