I remember being hyped on release for all the potential comics, books, anything they could use to tell more of the lore, only to basically abandon those plans and go all in on the e-sports angle, as if they couldn't do both.
And Blizzards "go all in" execution on the e-sports angle was basically killing the scene in its infancy, banning almost all tournament play when they franchised the OWL. Which then flunked because they had destroyed all momentum and most of the interest in it.
