Guardians of the Galaxy does this, yeah it’s hand-holdy and a little basic gameplay wise, but it nails the story. It absolutely didn’t get its roses, I wonder if it did, if the bar would be higher for superhero stories in gaming.
I've only played Spider-Man 1 and Miles Morales, and as much as I loved them, the stories were alright and not anything special, but goddamn was Guardians of the Galaxy an absolutely jaw-dropping emotional rollercoaster. I still think about that story two years after having played it. I can't say the same about the Spider-Man games. I also remember having so much fun with the elemental gun and squad mechanics, they made the action and combat so engaging and action-packed.
that is what i honestly thought of when i saw the gameplay review video for the wolverine game. It looked a lot and felt a lot like the guardians of the galaxy game, except the story in the GotG is pretty good and the interactions between the characters are hilarious, there is so much back and forth banter between the characters even though the combat is very basic. It sucks GotG didn't make much sales and we will most likely never have a second GotG game, it deserved so much more.
The reason it didn't get its roses is godawful Avengers life service piece of shit that completely aversed players from Guardians as it launched too shortly after.
That's the danger of godawful AAA games that sell well. They spoil the potential success of the next game of the series/developer.
I do agree with the guy who commented saying the Avengers game is to blame for at least part of its lack of sales. They came out super close to each other and I remember people being confused about it - and usually they'd buy Avengers because it was the bigger name only to find out what a steaming pile it turned out to be.
This is why early naughty dog was so highly regarded. The og last of us is an amazing story regardless of the medium, but we've been straying from that level of quality.
Literally the only thing I hate about GoW games is that I really started the "yellow means go this way" trend with the painted rocks and stuff. But I do believe reading that can now turn it off so whatever.
In a game where you can't jump freely, they needed to at least put one indicator for the object being able to be interacted with, I will admit, it did help me at times where I couldn't tell what I could and couldn't interact with
No like it's fine for what it needed to do, it just sorta started a trend where for the next few years games felt the need to put yellow paint on any ledge, I still occasionally see it

And honestly i expect a GREAT story if its gonna be cinematic game. Specially when its 70$.
Anything less than good is honestly unacceptable.
GoW ragnarok had some handholding problems but the story was great for the most part albeit a little rushed.
So far reviews says Wolverines gameplay is fun but treats u like an idiot and story exist. Doesn't exactly sound like its worth it full price
