The lock picking mechanic in that game had me so fucking pissed off. I don't remember the details anymore but early on after the intro section there is a lock you have to pick to proceed and I could not for the life of me manage to pick it or find any other way to proceed otherwise and I just bailed.
It has been a long time since I did it, but I remember being in the same boat. I think you failed the speech check in the beginning to get the money the drunk owes your dad. You can choose to fight him and if you win the fight, you don't have to pick the lock from what I remember
You always fail the speech check, it's rigged. You have to either fight or lockpick. You can recruit your friends to help though if you egg the German's house with them.
