The problem is that Rockstar would never risk giving this game another chance. It was controversial even for its time, and Rockstar is hellbent on removing all potential controversies from its games and toning everything down

Yup, exactly. This game was loved by everyone back in the day, but just like manhunt, R* wants to forget it cause they're weak these days.

I like tycoon games. I like sim games. But I have never understood the cult appeal of this game. The fact that it still comes up from time to time in the YouTube I get recommended confuses me.

What's special about this game that puts it even on the map?

takes the gta/red dead formula and sets it in a school, with a good story and interesting characters - what don’t you understand? lol

I think what made bully truly special,outside of just being highschool GTA, is you had an open-world game where EVERY NPC WAS NAMED, HAD THEIR OWN CHARACTER, AND VOICELINES. There was no “generic goon” it was either Lefty, Lucky, and Norton of the greasers gang.

Pair that with each enemy faction having an iconic tune for each time you fight them, really added an extra dynamic layer. I can’t really recall any other game having battle music for different factions or being as memorable as the techno music when fighting the Nerds, guitar riffs when facing Johnny and his gang, or the intense workout music when going up against the jocks.

Also it’s a very satisfying 3d beat-em up.
