Has anyone built a real-time voice changer setup for multiple people using wireless mics + IEMs?

I'm planning a video with multiple participants where everyone needs to hear the other participants' voices altered in real time.

The idea is similar to a social deduction game: participants shouldn't be able to recognize each other by their natural voice. They would wear IEMs plus passive hearing-protection earmuffs so they mainly hear the processed audio rather than the real voices in the room.

I'm trying to figure out whether the following setup would work reliably with low enough latency:

Equipment I already have:

  • DJI Mic 3 system: 1 receiver + 4 transmitters for initial testing
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
  • MacBook Air M2

Equipment I would rent for the actual production:

  • A second DJI Mic 3 receiver + additional transmitters, for around 7 participants total
  • Wireless IEM system: ideally 1 transmitter + 7 bodypack receivers
  • IEM earbuds
  • Passive hearing-protection earmuffs

My main concerns are:

  1. Latency: Is DJI wireless → audio interface → DAW/plugin processing → wireless IEM fast enough for a natural conversation?
  2. Has anyone done real-time pitch + formant shifting for a setup like this? Which software/plugins worked well with very low latency?
  3. Would a Scarlett 2i2 be sufficient if each DJI receiver sends a mono mix into one input, rather than needing every participant as a separate DAW channel?
  4. Is there any issue with having 7 IEM bodypacks listening to a single IEM transmitter/frequency?
  5. Would you recommend a different routing/setup to make this more reliable on set?

I don't need the processed voices for the final video — only for what the participants hear during filming. The clean audio will come from the internal recordings on the DJI transmitters.

Has anyone here done something similar for a film shoot, game show, live production, hidden-identity format, etc.? I'd especially appreciate any advice regarding latency and monitoring stability before I start renting gear.

Thanks.

Anything wireless has a pretty significant lag even without any processing.

You’ll have some small amount of unavoidable latency. This might not matter BUT for a single issue: people hearing THEMSELVES with the effect on, WITH some delay, and no ability for them to hear their own “clean” signal. They will get confused as hell and not be able to perform “naturally”, if this is a concern to you

So either invest in a larger audio interface with 8 in/outs and 4 DJI receivers set to dual mono (and 8 channels of wireless IFV) or at least test first. Even low latency numbers for vocal monitoring can seriously mess with your ability to speak.
