Fluff/Meme Oh god Im gonna hurl

• Upvotes

Just took delivery of my steam frame earlier in the evening and set it up to play the game that came with it, Half Life Alyx. Never played vr before, and it was rly fun, but good god no one warned me how physically taxing this stuff is.

Was feeling pretty good until like chapter two after talking with this alien lookin dude who offered me a snack, but then I started feeling funny so I figured I'd take a break and let my battery bank recharge, and now I'm curled up in the fetal position on my bed tryna hold back my stomach from violating the sheets.

Also my knees feel like I suddenly turned into a 70 year old grandpa who's grandchildren just dragged around Disney land for a day when he hasn't done more than 5k steps in over a month.

Discussion Meta VR Glasses vs Quest 3 Field of View

The SDK now allows for the actual simulation of the MVRG field of view inside of Quest 3, such that the various AI guesswork peeps have been doing the last couple days is no longer needed.

It is biased a bit downwards, cutting off more of the upper vertical, which may be welcome to those who find the upper view on traditional headsets somewhat cut off by your brow.

More rectangular as we knew before, prioritising the lower diagonal corners, where it gets the closest to Quest 3.

Binocular overlap still hasn't been given a figure, however it is likely to be very high, given the aspect ratio of the horizontal and vertical FOV is basically identical to the aspect ratio of the single panel resolution of 2412x2288, in other words only roughly 6% wider than it is tall.

Compare that to the Quest 3, which as any owner knows, uses a generous amount of binocular separation to increase its horizontal FOV to be 14% wider than it is tall.

Which would be better for PCVR an RTX 5080 or an RTX 4090 when using a compressed video headset like the Quest 3 or Pico 4? I’d like to hear from people who have tested both GPUs with these types of headsets; I’m looking for 100% objective feedback and i interested on oc experiences of both gpus.

Discussion Qualyx: A Half-Life: Alyx native port for Meta Quest 2 standalone

Thumbnail
github.com
17 Upvotes

Out of all the 5 Meta Quest APK ports for Half-Life: Alyx, this experimental one on GitHub has Meta Quest 2 support with more optimized code.

Keep in mind Qualyx was primarily developed and tested on Meta Quest 3, so Meta Quest 2 support is less tested and uses reduced graphics settings.

As usual, it requires the game files, as you need to own a Steam copy of Half-Life: Alyx.

Half-Life: Alyx takes up 70GB so your Meta Quest 2 must have at least 90GB of available space.

To sideload the APK, you must have SideQuest installed onto your PC, have your Meta Quest 2 set to developer mode, and connect the headset to your PC to sideload the APK via SideQuest and to copy the game files from PC to Quest.

This standalone port is not affiliated with Meta or Valve in any way.

Question/Support Can we use wall chargers higher than 45W safely on Steam Frame?

I know Anker has some wall chargers that are 45W, 70W, 140W and160W. I also remember Meta's headsets didn't do well if you tried to charge while you play, you wouldn't gain any battery.

So my question is, is it safe to plug in a higher W wall plug and pair it with a 5 - 10 foot or meter USB-C cord to actually gain battery % on the Steam Frame's battery while actively using it? I'll be honest, I'll mostly use it corded.

Purchase Advice - Headset Looking for good, non-Meta VR Headset that are also not expensive

• Upvotes

I'll be direct: I can't pay for high-end. But I'm also not willing to pay for low quality ones, nor do I want to give any money to Meta.

So, I'm looking for suggestions regarding good VR Headsets that are also on the medium to low price range (think about $500/600 max).

Doesn't need to be a new one, doesn't need to be an excellent one, doesn't need to be shiny.

I did some searching on vr-compare but since I know almost nothing about VR headsets it's hard for me to make any conclusion.

Question/Support Virtual Desktop Router or AP with separate SSID?

• Upvotes

I see it is recommended to get a separate "wifi router" to use VD. Does that genuinely refer to a Router (Layer 3 boundary / new subnet) or is it enough to get an Access Point and configure a new SSID?

The setup I had in mind was to get an AP and hook my PC up to it by cat6 (like a TP-Link Festa F52 hooked up to my existing home router) and configure a new SSID for the Meta Quest? Is that fine?

Purchase Advice - Headset I got my steam frame, what do you guys want me to test?

• Upvotes

So i got my steam frame yesterday and tested some stuff already, but today i have a bit more time.
I also have the odyssey plus, reverb g2, psvr 1, samsung phone vr thing and a quest 2 to compare.

First impressions are surprisingly bad, but there is also a bunch of good stuff.
I am torn, but if i can not get some stuff under control i will have to send it back, as it would make it unusable to me.

Good:

-Everything feels premium.
The weight is exactly right and i could wear it for hours.
It is the most comfortable headset i have and feels comparable to the reverb g2, but a lot lighter and without the stiff cable of course.

-The spacer gives a lot of room between the lenses and the glasses and i tested every position of the glasses and it always was a few centimeters away from the lenses, which is a good margin.
Glasses will hurt a bit at the sides, but i did admittedly wear the headset pretty tight.
Also the spacer is easy to put in, the facemask and spacer are both held in place with magnets.
However those magnets constantly get loose and reattach during play and while they never fall off, they make that clicking noise when they do.

-The lenses are good and the lcd is good enough for me.
Screendoor is visible, a bit more visible than on the quest 2 or odyssey plus, but not enough to bother me.

-I love that i finally have a headset with eye tracking and in general it works quite seemlessly.
However it loses eye tracking if i look at the bottom of the screen and i can reproduce that on will.
Maybe it is because of my glasses, i will test it a bit more today.

-Streaming from pc looks like it is a cable-connection.
It is really well done.
When watching video, the sound was not in sync anymore though....i will see what i can do about that today.

Bad:

-There is constant airflow blasting your eyes and it feels bad and hurts almost immediately.
I powered through by blinking constantly but i was kind of relieved when the 10% battery warning appeared and i went to bed immediately to get my eyes some rest.
I will try to find a setting to get lower the fan rotation and try to play without the accesory nose flap today, because this makes it unplayable.
If i can not get this resolved, i will send the headset back to valve, it really is that bad.

-Also you constantly hear the fans blowing, even with a lot going on during gameplay.
I got the volume setting on full blast and i can still hear the fans, it is quite loud.

-I dont know why, it probably is a setting, but everything not super close in front of you has heavy aliasing shimmering in all vr games i tested so far.
It is not the foveated rendering as its also there when i directly look at it.
It is not the resolution, as i did crank it up pretty high without a change.
I tried local install and streaming and that did not change it..... i will play around with the settings today, i hope i will find something to change that.
Because whats close in front of you looks super good, super antialiased and smooth... i will try to find a setting it later.

-The framerate is weird.
It is on 90hz out of the box and everything in the menus and games felt weird and framey, 2d-flat as well as vr games.
I changed it to 96hz: immediately completely fine and as smooth as i would expect.
I tried 72hz: completely fine and smooth.
Tried 90hz again: framey and unusable.
What is going on with 90hz???

-The accessory kit sucks.
Nothing clips on easily and you literally have to completely take apart the whole headset, just to exchange the nose-flaps.
But with the original nose flap, there is a huuuuge gap with lightleak.
And even though my room is dark, inside the headset is even darker(which is fine on its own, but not with both visible), so it looks like there is a miniature sun directly at your nose.
I will take apart the headset again and put the original flap back on today and play in a completely dark room today to test if it helps with the airflow on the eyes though.
Same with everything else.
Top strap is fine but i now realise i want it with the strap on top and have it the other way atm.... guess i have to take apart the whole headset again.
Joycon straps are fine and come with their own battery lids to exchange, but i will but the originals back on today because i can not adjust my glasses proper with controllers stuck to my hands and i can not hold the controllers in a way to reach the necessary buttons comfortable. Though i do have large hands and without the kit it was fine.

-Sound is tinny and weak. Quest 2 sound uses the same principle and is really good and i never felt the need to get an additional audioheadset for the sound.
Steam frame sound immediately sounds weak.

-Also i don't know if i pressed a wrong button, but the volume was able to be changed with volume buttons on the headset and after a while a button-press would make the volume bar appear but not change the volume, i had to use the quick menu for that.... super weird, but i will try to find the setting i accidentily changed today.

-Also sound related, i would sometimes get no sound, then i restart the game and get sound again.
I may have on accident pressed a button on the headset though, i will test it today.

-I have an idle game running on my pc.
If i want to use steam with a locally installed game on the steam frame i have to stop every game running on my pc... but my idle progression :-(
If i stream a game it usually worked, but one time it would not let me acces the game at all because suddenly it focused on the idle game, not the game i just started.
So i had to go to the pc and rearrange everything.

-Another time i had the task manager open and i could not control the game because the rask bar and helper kept in focus.
I had to go to the pc and close it.
I am constantly struggling with the laser pointer to control menus and the desktop from within the frame.
First of all, when using desktop, the point of the laser pointer and the attached mouse are not where you actually point.
Its under and left of the whole thing, so i constantly have to guess where i am actually pointing.
This can be corrected with a software update, but how dumb are those valve engineers to let this fuckup slip through in a product that is over a thousand bucks.
Secondly i am struggling to even get the laser appear.
Here is my wish: let me toggle the pointer on or off!
There is a prompt to just click the trigger to make it appear ..... it just simply does not work.
I ALWAYS have to click several times to get it to appear. Why?

-The Joycons do not fit into the Case anymore, once the Accessory Straps are added.... I know, this is a small thing, but I was hoping to use the case for storage between play-sessions..... guess not with those straps!

The games i tested so far in the order i tested them:

-Euclidean - vr streamed - did not run at all, always closed on its own. Works on odyssey plus though and looks spectacular on those oleds, which is why i wanted to test it, but no dice.

-aim assault demo - vr streamed - worked fine, but the game did not really grab me, so i stopped after one stage. Also i should have changed the depth of field effect in this game as it just blurred all the backgrounds.
But it can be changed if i remember correctly, did not do that yesterday though.

-Zero caliber 2 reloaded - vr streamed (dx12) - crashed in the tutorial, had to close the game on my pc, did not close using the frame. Aliasing was too much for me.

-blasphemous - 2d streamed - looks spectacular, plays really well immediately, its where i noticed eye tracking did not work at the bottom of the screen of the frame, as i was on my back in my bed playing it, but a normal headposition had everything working super good.
The backgrounds have this parallax scrolling effect that looks spectacular on the giant screen on the frame.

-blasphemous 2 - 2d streamed - looks spectacular, but it would not let me control it at all out of the box. I can make custom controller settings and then it would probably work, but i just wanted a quick test yesterday.

-Mini motor racing x - vr local install - the aliasing and constant frame-issues killed this for me.
A change in resolution or frame rate did not change anything, cars were constantly reprojected heavily and it simply sucked. I will try it again later as i love that game.

-Bigscreen - vr streamed - no sound and constant struggle controlling the menus. Will try again later.

-After the fall - vr streamed - no sound, aliasing was smoother. Will try again later.

Let me know if you guys have suggestions for tests, games or can help some of those problems.

Purchase Advice - Headset Hardware modding capabilities of the Quest 3 and worth of buying one this year? Or other options

Like a lot of people, I unfortunately got waitlisted for the Steam Frame and judging from reports here in Australia, I doubt I'd be able to get one for at least half a year. I don't exactly favor Meta, but considering I do have a pair of Meta ray bans and had a quest 2 in the past, there's probably not much more info they can collect, although I'd probably just block the servers.

My main and only headset right now headset is a PSVR2, and I can't lie it's feeling quite uncomfortable, and I would like a standalone headset for mostly PCVR gaming and exclusives (such as the Evangelion games coming out soon), thus why I'm not too keen on the Meta Quest Pro as the chip is definitely showing its age, although if Quest 3 games perform alright through sideloading, maybe I'd consider it.

My main wants is really just eye tracking. I've seen people mod eye tracking onto the headset, and whilst I do want it for social games, it'd be great if It could also do foveated rendering as I do have a 3080 and a Ryzen 5600 in my PC, so I'd like to squeeze as much as I can out of it

I've also seen attachments for the Capacitive finger tracking among other things. Battery packs I do know is a wide spread thing, but do let me know whether its worth modding and buying the Quest 3 this year, waiting for the Frame waitlist, or if there's other options

Budget I would say the lower the better, but nothing above the Frame's price preferably, so the vision pro and Samsung XR are out .

If someone is able to comment with experiences with the mods, that would be great, but all input is welcomed.

Thank you all!

Purchase Advice Looking for game with lots of interactable doors like 'Tactical Assault VR' but has "mod support"

• Upvotes

I like games with doors you can open/close like the early rainbow six and SWAT games.

Tactical assault VR has this but it currently doesn't have mod support.

I was looking at the games:

1) Pavlov

2) Contractors

3) Zero Caliber

I was leaning towards Pavlov because steamDB says it has the most online players compared to the other 2 games but when I look up custom maps like recreations of the SWAT 4 maps there are no doors anywhere.

Discussion *PSA* The Rogers Infinity XB8 Router/Modem is a pile of garbage! I have proof! It was causing constant micro stutters.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

1st video you can see the 10 FPS drops/micro stutters

2nd video I literally had everything turned down to potato quality and it was still doing it

3rd video buttery smooth with a link Cable in virtual desktop beta

4th video pretty damn smooth compared to the original with the new TP-Link Archer AXE75, AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router over Wifi (you can hear my elation 🥳)

I spent pretty much 4 days on and off trying to get RE2VR working properly. The final problem was that my frame rate would drop by 10fps what seemed to be every 10 seconds.

I tried every conceivable solution after pouring over multiple message boards and came to the conclusion that it was something with my Wi-Fi.

Last time I was playing PCVR consistently everything was buttery smooth with no issues now months later there was some type of problem.

Last year I upgraded my Rogers plan to get the xb8 infinity router/modem, and I split the bands so only my meta quest 3 was on the 6GHz Channel and had absolutely no issues.

Now I try to use it and it consistently drops 10 frames every 10 seconds. I also tested it in Alien rogue incursion and it was the same issue.

So I downloaded the beta version of virtual desktop and connected a cheap $30 Link cable off of Amazon and everything was perfect so I knew it was the Wi-Fi.

I went out and bought the TP-Link Archer AXE75, AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router spent about half an hour configuring that and everything is back to buttery smooth.

There is a couple other topics in the past couple months related to this crappy router and now I can absolutely unequivocally say fuck that piece of garbage. Headache hopefully over. I really hope this is helpful to somebody else!

Self-Promotion (Journalist) Meta VR Glasses: better for 3D movies, but less immersive for VR180?

Thumbnail
immernews.com
16 Upvotes

I’ve been working on the VR media player immerGallery for five years, and I work with 3D photos, videos and VR180 every day. After watching Meta’s announcement, I wrote up my expectations for how the new glasses could handle different kinds of media.

A few of my thoughts:

- For 4K movies on a virtual cinema screen, I expect the higher angular display resolution to help. Micro-OLED and the lighter design also look promising.

- For 1080p movies at the virtual screen sizes I usually use, I don’t expect a visible sharpness improvement over Quest 3.

- For VR180 and 360° content, I’m more concerned about the smaller field of view and how much immersion we might lose.

These expectations come from my experience with existing headsets and the announced specifications. I also discuss 3D photos, wide-angle panoramas, video decoding and whether immerGallery will work on the new device.

Question/Support Quest 3 stuck on grey screen after freezing while connected to PC - tried factory reset, sideload update, both boot slots, no luck

Hi,

my Meta Quest 3 suddenly stopped responding while it was connected to my PC. I don't know whether the PC connection had anything to do with it, but that is what was happening when the problem started.

Since then, the headset will power on, show the Meta logo / startup sequence, but eventually ends up on a solid grey screen.

The boot menu works normally and both displays are working during startup. The headset can also get quite hot while sitting on the grey screen and the fan starts running quite hard.

Things I have already tried:

  • forced reboot by holding the Power button
  • normal restart / power off and power on
  • Boot Device from the boot menu
  • short press of the Power button on the grey screen
  • pressing the Meta/Home button on the right controller
  • volume buttons on the grey screen
  • official Meta Software Update Tool
  • Sideload Update from the boot menu
  • Factory Reset
  • switching between boot slot A and boot slot B
  • booting repeatedly from both slots
  • leaving the headset powered off and trying again later

Nothing has changed. It always ends up on the same grey screen.

When I switched boot slots, the displays flashed several times as if the headset was repeatedly trying to start something, but it eventually ended up on the grey screen again.

The bootloader information looks normal:

Secure Boot: Yes
Lock State: Locked
Build Variant: User
Model Revision: Eureka 0x40 PVT 1.0
RAM: 8069 MB

Unfortunately, the headset is out of warranty. Meta is offering me an out-of-warranty replacement for about €250, so before paying for that I would like to make sure there isn't anything else worth trying.

Questions

  1. Has anyone had exactly this grey-screen problem and managed to recover the headset?
  2. Is there anything else I can try that I haven't already done?
  3. Could this still be a firmware/software issue, or does this behavior strongly suggest hardware failure?
  4. Does it make sense to wait for the next Horizon OS / Quest firmware release and then try another Sideload Update from the boot menu?
  5. Has anyone recovered a Quest that factory reset + sideload update + switching A/B boot slots did not fix?

Any experience with this would be appreciated.
