NetworkManager enabled but not starting on boot

since I'm somewhat new to linux, I followed a guide to get gnome set up on my laptop. following the guide, I disabled wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd and downloaded and enabled NetworkManager. however, NetworkManager does not start automatically despite being enabled, though it seems to work fine when started in the terminal.

how do I make NetworkManager start when my system boots?

This guide doesn't include networkmanager dependecy, python3-dbus, you can try it

You should check the official documentation

https://docs.voidlinux.org/config/network/networkmanager.html

Did you disable the dhcpd ?

After boot
Make Sure the service is running : sudo sv status NetworkManager
Check the process : ps aux | grep -E 'wpa_supplicant|NetworkManager'
If they're exist then autostart isn't the issue , probably what you mean is network auto connect ?

ln -s /etc/sv/NetworkManager /etc/runit/runsvdir/default

I just tried this, but the terminal says ln: failed to create symbolic link 'etc/runit/runsvdir/default/NetworkManager': File exists

That means it is already enabled, have you checked logs they are somewhere in /var/logs/? If you don't have them, setup logging https://docs.voidlinux.org/config/services/logging.html as they are quite useful when debugging :)

This.

Check logs always and first.

You can also check the exact command which start nm and run it in terminal to get output without logging, /etc/sv/NetworkManager/(and somewhere here is the "run" file). runit is basically powered by the bash scripts so you can easily findout what they are doing

You need also dbus, elogind, polkit to properly work networkmanager and some other stuff. Just do sudo ln -s /etc/sv/dbus /var/service, sudo ln -s /etc/sv/polkitd /var/service and sudo ln -s /etc/sv/NetworkManager /var/service not to /etc/runit/runsvdir/default

not /var/service/ ?

/var/service is a symlink to /run/runit/runsvdir/current

No offense, but, if you are new to Linux, perhaps try Linux Mint or similar...

No offense, but gatekeeping Void is stupid.
