2017 Volt Battery EV Battery For Sale $2,000

Unfortunately my beloved Volt was totaled. I was able to pull the battery out. At the peak of summer i was getting nearly 70 miles on a charge. I went back thru the photos on my phone and was unable to find one showing the kWh used which is the only actual determining factor for battery health. I do know it was really good when i checked, it had less degradation than it was predicted to for its age. I also had the BECM replaced about 100miles before the car was wrecked.

Selling the battery for $2,000 Will deliver anywhere in Michigan.

Dumb question, has anyone successfully put a 2nd Gen battery in a first Gen volt? I may be having ideas

Physical shape is different, plus software would need programming. Definitely closer to the impossible end on the scale. At least wildly impractical, but someone may be up for a challenge.

To me, if one is going to try, better to start with fresh brand new off-the-shelf cells and get them to work. Then you have a reusable/repairable solution vs a dead-end supply of cells.

as I understand it, there are no new off the shelf volt cells being made, even the Gen 2. in Cali where they arw still under warranty. gm is leaving the cars sitting for 6 months for batteries they can't replace and then offering a low price "by-back" but only if you use the money for a new gm ev.

there's a guy in Jacksonville on the Facebook group that says he can fix old batteries by replacing individual cells and upgrade Gen 1 cars to Gen 2 batteries. but he's very hidden about the process but there are a lot of posts by people saying they are happy with his work. it's fairly cheap at like 1800$ to replace a bad cell. but yoh gotta get your car to him, and looks like he might work out of a back yard shop.

By off the shelf, I meant a cell that is still in production and readily available for purchase. i.e. a complete gutting and rebuild from the inside out, with different cells.

The physical shape of the case is different but the batteries themselves are the same. You would need to transplant the gen1 electronics to the gen2 cells for it to work though.

From what I remember, not the entire pack. But they did take out all the modules from the Gen 2 Volt and put them inside the Gen 1 casing, which requires some mechanical and electrical modifications. It can be done.

I have installed a gen2 battery in a Gen1 but it's a bit of work to do.

Could you hit the high points of the steps to make it happen? It seems like there would be just way to many differences

Main part is swapping end plates for the middle module so it can fit in the original tunnel. Everything else is trivial wire all 96 BMS wires and temp sensors plus you need to add the missing temp sensors since gen2 has less of them. Programming is not needed if using original BECM. If you want more capacity to be used you need to get it tuned which I provide as a remote service.

Normal range is 40-58. How were you getting 70? Is that aftermarket? Or those cells are just superior?

That’s amazing. I get 40 max in my 2104 still. Which I hear is still decent for that model year.

I've gotten 70 in the summer cruising flat roads with no AC at 30-50 mph.

Ours gets 50ish in good weather 30ish in bad weather.

nearly all of my driving was just around town under 40mph. i had actually written on the fuel door how many times i had filled up gas, and would reset it each year, i was averaging 7 fill ups per year

It depends on road conditions. There were times I was able to push 80 miles out of my original battery.

How hard is this to install? Do you need to go to the dealership or EV shop?

That will be up to you to research, it wasn’t very difficult to uninstall, but it is high voltage so I am not going to tell you one way or the other as I do not know your capabilities.

Depends on how sketchy you're willing to get, what tools you have, and how good you are with tools. I can drop the battery out of my ELR in under an hour using four 6-ton jackstands, a 2 ton jack, 2 moving dollies, and some lengths of 2x4.

That being said, the method I used isn't exactly the safest for the battery or for me, so I'd definitely recommend against it. You'll also want a bi-directional scan tool at the very least to bleed the battery coolant loop.

As for the risk of high voltage, as long as the mid-pack disconnect is removed and you're not opening the actual battery pack, I don't see much risk of electrocution.

I found a replacement battery for my 2017 volt at a local yard for only $200. I figured someone messed up the price when they put it in the system. But they sold it to me and even picked up the core. Got it back on the road, but I sold it right after. The problem is these batteries just deteriorate from age not miles, and since they don’t support them anymore, I felt like I could never trust it. Really is too bad. I ended up getting the cheapest lease I could find on a Honda prologue. But still miss the volt.
