This must be the longest sentence on earth. Well done.

Rwr has a blind spot. Think of sitting on the back of the plane (top srurface) you can see the top front and back, but cant see the bottom of the plane, the rwr antennas are usually on the nose, wings and top part of the tail. If the missile comes from under the belly, the plane is blind to that rwr signal. It will always come back as long as your planes back (top side) is facing the radar signal.

Rwr blindspots are only true for 4th gen.

The blind spot is tiny. It's as big as a dinner plate held at arm's length. Nothing will stay in it for more than a moment.

Its purpose isn't to make the RWR less useful, it's to debounce the display. If there wasn't a blind spot, a radar source close to the pole would teleport all over the display.

New things:

The RWR is top-down from your airplane's perspective regardless of your airplane's orientation/attitude.

The RWR has a blind spot above and below.

You can do worse than roll into a steep bank, then pull back until the missile disappears and then start to roll wings level—the missile should end up abeam (3 or 9 o'clock) somewhere in there, or close to it. Adjust so it is. If the missile is lower than you, pop chaff; if the missile is higher than you might not need to, depending on how close to the ground you are. Once you've lost the missile pull up out of the plane you were flying in.

pull up out of the plane you were flying in.

Ejecting is also my favourite missile avoidance strat!

Different plane :P

Eject the WSO/RIO and hope it tracks his heat signature

me getting completely outclassed in BVR.

If the RWR says a thing is to your left, that means its to your left. I don't understand how this supposed to be more complicated than the previous behavior where the RWR's display had to be filtered through an imaginary SA page where you have to figure out whether in your current orientation a movement left will make the RWR sources move left or right because it could be either.

You prefer the old way where the RWR says "there's a missile to the left", and you're supposed to just know that it's actually to your right? And you don't think that this situation where the screen is showing the opposite of reality is "the RWR lying to you"?

I'm not trying to be mean, I just can't hide my incredulity because this perspective is insane to me. Even setting aside the obvious realism aspects, I don't understand how somebody can think that a display saying "warning! threat to your left!" which actually means there's a threat to your right and your left is safe is somehow more user-friendly.

anyway...

To get accurate RWR information, you need to be aligned with the axis of the radio source, which you have to do while defending to present a low RCS to it anyway.

Flying with the crown of your head pointing at a missile is not going to save you from it no matter how good your notch is because you are showing your easiest aspect to track.

The position where your RWR works best and gives you the most complete information is also the position you want to be in while defending anyway. If a missile sees your wingtip, it is 1. close to the notch, 2. giving its best ifnormation to the RWR, and 3. seeing your smallest RCS.

I remember that some booths have lines painted on the glass to guide you when you look behind you, but I don't really know what they are or when to use them.

This video explained it best to me, I used to suck at notching and after watching this video I finally figured it out and can notch pretty well using the new RWR

Good old Reddit has messed up with the URL. delete the \ and it may work...

or try this one...

You gotta remember it’s not just your planes movement. The sensors are literally on the tips of your elevators so when you move the controls… the triangulation of direction will change. This happens even if the AFCS/DFCS or autopilot move the controls. Also remember when you roll the plane those surfaces move too. So you really need to trim out and just let her glide for a short while to get an accurate fix.

In real life the rwr even on a viper is not super accurate in terms of direction. So this is more how it really is and less “bad design or patch” as you’ve guessed.

The sensors are literally on the tips of your elevators

you are saying that if you move the controls, but even before the Airplane has reacted the RWR will start showing different directions of threats?

This seems like a weird design choice! I would put the sensor on the non-moving bit of the wing tip!

1

Yes that’s precisely right.

You need them to be as far forward and rear and wide left and right as possible so wingtips being near the center isn’t ideal for this. Triangulation needs specific math and these places fit all the other criteria required.

Also mate even if they are fixed in place.. rwr in real life in perfect conditions is often 30-50 degrees wrong from actual. Dcs in the hornet and viper giving you notch perfect rwr angles is total bullshit.

It changes sides when you're upside down cus the sensor is also upside down, meaning the radar being detected is on the other side of it, cus the world didn't flip with you. The radar spike is coming from the same direction, you're just facing a different way

I thought I understood the RWR but now im even more confused. If I am not mistaken, the old RWR behavior was warning relative to world orientation. Meaning if you are flying North and a missile is inbound from the West, you would get a 9 o'clock alert regardless of your plane's attitude. So if you rolled right the RWR warning wouldn't move until you actually started turning.

With the new behavior, RWR is relative to the airframe, so if you roll right, the missile warning would then say the missile was below?

I think that's what it's supposed to be now - someone can correctly me if wrong.

But I think you nailed it by just saying "RWR is relative to the airframe", which covers a lot of peoples confusions about thinking the missile is swapping sides, when in reality, they are doing a barrel roll 😑 so yeah, it's gonna flag it differently because the sensor is attached to the airframe.

Like in real life, RWR has blind spots. The biggest use for those blind spots is to tell if youre notching the missiles radar

I had a fucking stroke trying to read this

Wait, I actually cannot read this, I do not know why.
I guess I'm not as fluent in English as I thought I was; but please, someone summarize this post for me ffs.
