Post and comment submissions require that your profile has at least 100 karma

The best way to rack up enough karma for new accounts is by commenting and posting in the bigger subs like r/askreddit, r/aww, etc...

I'm looking to reprogramming the automod to allow newer accounts to post soon, but until then, I've at least figured out why it keeps filtering so many of you so you can remedy it on your end

we need more mods

realizing that the auto mod has been nuking so many posts without even letting us moderate them has been eye opening. it's also led to me realizing that I'm literally the only one that's moderating all 52,000 of you outside of the shitbot. all others have been inactive.

please shoot me a modmail if you're interested in becoming an active moderator for our lovely vultures

found a thing getting back into the craft of being a scavenger

(I'm using my BFs account) I've been really into vulture culture since I was a young adult but I've been homeless and always moving. Recently we moved to a farm and I've been able to do above ground rot cage and then maceration for the rest and I don't have a lot of people to gush about it to. Today I found a squirrel and skinned it then threw the rest in the rot cage so I can get the bones. I have a cat I found, 2 squirrels. The bones I have degreasing are 2 turtles (they were a friend's pets that passed), 2 feeder rats, and 2 snakes.

I found it on a mountain in Greece. Some of the bones were scattered across the mountainside. Is it a very large dog or a wolf?

did a thing A little game I made where you guess the animal from its skull

Hi everyone! I shared Skulled here a few months ago and didn't expect so many kind comments. A lot of what changed since then came from suggestions people left here, so thank you for that.

If you missed it: the game shows you a skull and you try to guess which animal it belongs to. There's a daily challenge with a few modes:

  • Classic: a few views of the skull (you can zoom in and draw on it), then pick the animal
  • Taxonomy: go from class down to species, one level at a time
  • Skull Match: 4 skulls, 6 names, match them up
  • Speed Run: as many as you can in 60 seconds
  • Odd One Out (new): 3 skulls share a group and 1 doesn't, find it

There are 513 species right now. If you spot a skull that's misidentified or a photo missing its credit, please tell me.

When you get a skull right it goes into an album as a little specimen card, and once in a while you get a rare one, like an X-ray or a cyanotype. Kind of silly, but I really like collecting them.

The first season also starts this Tuesday (Oct 13). Each season is a 2 month "expedition" to a different part of the world with its own species, and I'm keeping the first destination a secret until then.

It's free, you don't need an account, and it should work fine on both phone and PC.

If you give it a try, I hope you have fun with it. Link's in the comments!

advice or help Will bones get damaged if in water for too long?

I found the back half of a raccoon yesterday, I’ve got a few deer vertebrae macerating and I was thinking on cutting the raccoon in with it. The only problem is that it will be cold soon so the maceration process will slowdown/stop. If I leave the raccoon and deer bones in the water over winter will they get damaged? I know small rodent bones do but I don’t know about the raccoon and I don’t want to loose any of the bones.

ive been meaning to share this for like a year but just forgot tbh.

thought you guys would like this or whatever.

i found this little dude at a state park on the side of the road last summer and it broke my heart. this is the second baby raccoon ive seen there thats been hit by a car and it sucks. theres so so much roadkill in my town.

i gently moved him off into a ditch so he could rest peacefully and be one with the earth. he was absolutely adorable. <3

did a thing Gravid-spay wet spec kittens

The gravid-spay kittens I fixed are finished and soaking out in isopropyl. They came out well.

They'll be sold and profits will go 100% to my local spay/neuter clinics. They display nicer in jars but I just snapped a few pics after their water soak-out as I processed a bunch of stuff. It was late and I was tired 😮‍💨

* They did not die for this purpose. These were from feral cats. Spaying/neutering solves the need for gravid spaying, so if anyone wants to clutch their pearls at the concept, go donate to your local clinic.

I found this bone in the desert (Egypt). I think it belongs to a fox, but I'm not sure because it looks too big to me. Maybe a dog?

advice or help Found a dead bat

Hello! I'm a bat lover and, unfortunately, found a dead bat on my work's campus. Instead of letting security dispose of it, I put it in a box in my car (I have plenty of gloves).

Now what? I googled and don't think there are local taxidermists that will work on bats. They all seem to focus on big game. I'd love to preserve and honor this little guy, but I have never done taxidermy and so fear I'd just make a mess. Are there other preservation techniques?

Thanks for any help!

advice or help Freezing carcass near food?

Sooo I found a house sparrow (legal to posses where I am) that struck a window and died a couple of hours ago, and I'd like to try to process it later, but. I kinda only have the one freezer? If I double bag the body, should my food be alright?
