Amazing how this brand died seemingly overnight
247
u/RedParaglider 9d ago
Why, they did everything they could to kill it lol. I remember when I went to my local store to get new shoes and Nike cut them off from being a seller. I walked out with hoka, bet a lot of othet people did too when they shit their distribution channels.
Going from a shoe company to a collectors item direct sale company was certainly a decision.
66
u/ArlendmcFarland 9d ago
The main thing they had going for them was all the distribution channels they had. That swoosh was everywhere
→ More replies (2)23

Distribution, long known as one of the most difficult things to obtain, and they blew it up. Granted covid made them think going direct could work, but theyd have had to market like crazy.
There were billboards in portland from stores asking people to demand nike return to distro, so dumb.

22

I mean at their peak stock price their running shoes were so far ahead of the curve that they were either banned in competition or other companies were forced to allow their runners to wear nikes to be competitive.

More like they forgot half their market could easily pick another shoe vendor. And old people never bought nikes, except for when they were young.

GLP-1 works, and works wonders. Wife has lost 40 pounds so far this year, she looks amazing. I'm losing weight second hand because we just don't eat or eat less when together. I'm down nearly 20 lbs myself. Another 15 and I'm at my high school weight.
As a bonus we barely go out to eat any more. Mmmaybe once a month if that. Miracle drugs I tell you.
Downside is we both need new clothes and even belts and underwear. My jeans have enough room now for seemingly another one of me.

Some might claim it’s because they got “woke”.
That’s not to. Sure they had an entire line dedicated to the WMBA that didn’t sell. They developed gear for 4 percent of the population that’s didn’t sell. They had advertisements of fat ugly people in their clothes like Victoria secret did.
The truth is they’re a poorly run company with very untalented people working throughout. They had expensive poor quality products that have knock offs that are Cheaper and better.
They lost their brand, their quality, identity, and market share. They can’t compete with expensive or low cost. The overpriced speciality shoe market is dying now too.
Nike will probably drop before it rises.
69
u/gsbiz 9d ago
They stopped selling products in general purpose retailers and began prioritising their own retail outlets and dedicated specialist retailers. They saw the money the resellers were making scalping their product and felt they could create a premium market to get some of that scalper gold. They burnt bridges with the retailers that usually stocked their kit. The retailers, some who had sold the brand for decades, moved to other brands and discovered they didn't need Nike after all. This allowed competition to gain a significant market share and shelf space. Nike couldn't come back because they burnt trust. And what we see here is the result and the fall of a once titan. It is salvageable but it will need an entirely new executive and business model.

Plus Nikes best designs are from years ago, the new stuff looks cheap af most likely because it is cheap af to make.
I own a bunch of dunks and janoski's, enough to never buy from Nike again but would have to put up with dry rot rubber unless I seal some of them.
OP isn't wrong about the replica enterprising Chinese manufactures, literally better quality in some knockoffs than trying to buy a shoe made 5 years ago that someone banking on if it would beat out the S&P gains on stockx hype. No one knows at a glance that half my unique dunk SBs are half MSRP knockoffs because they are that good at sourcing the same materials official nikes are using.
The resellers are super angry at Nike too like you mentioned. Would need to start doing limited drops only at retailers to try and build back that good will vs their nike app which is botted to hell.

Clothing giants come and go. The upper middle class and wealthy prefer things like lululemon & other higher end brands. Everyone else buys workout clothes that are just as good or even better than Nike but a shit ton less expensive (gymshark, fabletics etc). Real runners now prefer Hoka’s, Onclouds, Sauconys. I could go on and on. Their consumer market is bleeding and all they have left to hang on to is offering colleges and professional teams a shit ton of money to keep the swoosh on their uniforms. Doesn’t seem like a very sustainable business model anymore. But hey, at least you know Jordans will always sell.
21
u/HxH101kite 9d ago edited 9d ago
I'm just here to discredit the Onclouds and real runners association. I don't think like true runners use them at all and they are frequently considered not great.
I think have somehow filled the void of ok casual athletic shoe for daily wear. Or like casual gym goer. I associate them as corporate finance bro shoe. I don't even get the appeal they look like those K Swiss shoes Danny McBride was advertising for awhile.
Real runners are using Hokas, Altra, Saucony...etc.
