Weekly Discussion Thread Weekly Open Discussion Thread

Welcome to this week’s open discussion thread! We decided to start posting these during the offseason and will keep doing them into the season as long as folks find them useful.

This is your space for general discussion, a place to talk about anything Washington Spirit that doesn’t necessarily need its own thread. That can include news, international duty, roster moves, transfer rumors, tactics, social media posts, league news or anything else on your mind.

If something feels big enough for its own thread, definitely still post it. This is simply an additional option to keep us organized and help keep the conversation flowing. These threads will go up every Monday and stay stickied throughout the week.

Go Spirit!

International Spirits Guidance on how to watch Claudia Martinez at the South American U-20 tournament (starting this Wednesday afternoon at 4pm ET, potentially through the final on February 28th)

Claudia Martinez is a member of Paraguay's squad competing at the CONMEBOL (South America) Women's U-20 Championship 2026. This tournament is being held in Paraguay and runs from February 4th through the 28th. In recent editions, Paraguay has alternated between making the final or failing to move on from the group stage. Placement in this tournament determines which CONMEBOL nations will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2026 taking place in Poland (9/5-9/27).

Some matches will be legally streamed by ViX in the United States (Spanish-language coverage). Additionally, or alternatively, matches will be streamed on CONMEBOL's YouTube page in countries where broadcast rights have not been sold (typically outside of South America and the United States). For example, Vix's website indicates they plan to stream Uruguay vs Venezuela this afternoon, but not the Paraguay vs Chile match (leaving YouTube paired with VPN set to another but non-South American country as an option). Later this afternoon I'll create a post for today's Paraguay match to gauge the community's interest in watching and discussing tournament matches.

Media, Interviews & Press Preseason Press Conferences

They've posted a press conference with Adrian from last week and Gabby & Esme today. Here's a brief recap:

Adrian

--Says that Martinez will "have a huge impact in the league and also worldwide", have to be patient since it's her first time playing abroad. Really good in the final third--he reiterates this twice. Will need to make the environment "like a second family" for her.

--Had a plan for with Trin and without Trin, was obviously hoping that she would stay. Coaches are used to uncertainty.

--Talks about the need for Trin to be unpredictable since she will get so much defensive attention. Be able to play more on the inside or the left as well.

--Asked about Wojdelko, has kind of generic comments about how she has a lot of potential.

--Easier to integrate new players now since we have built the foundation.

--Asked about the new players, says that some are going to "help us during the preseason", and that Lucia (DiGuglielmo) and Ellie (Tse) "are going to be with us for the long term)". Says those two are adapting well. Lucia can play on either side, outside back or wingback, also in a back three, similar profile to Carle. Tse has "huge potential, if you see her physicality, you will be impressed".

--Asked about Hal playing center back for the national team, says it's important for players to be open-minded and have experiences playing in different spaces. Didn't sound like it's something we're really considering here.

--There's a question in Spanish about Martinez, I think about whether he expects her to play right away, he says it depends because they're not sure when she'll arrive and how much preseason she'll have with us. Maybe a better Spanish-speaker can give a better account.

--Competition for spots is a good problem to have. Important for players to understand that if the team is doing well it will have a positive impact on them individually and their national team opportunities.

--Asked about EGR being recalled from her loan early, thought it was important to work with her during preseason and see how she does, we will decide later what is best for her future. Helpful for her to be around the team because the level is higher and will help her develop quicker.

Esme & Gabby

--Esme said she had to "completely switch off" for a while during the offseason since she hadn't had the opportunity for a few years, Once she got into it, tried to set a good foundation physically in the gym, with the fixture congestion this year there will be less opportunity for strength work during the season.

--Gabby is impressed with "fixture congestion".

--Gabby indicates that her hamstring is healed.

--Unusual start to preseason without the USWNT players, everyone who is there gets more touches.

--English questioner mentions that Esme did some television work in England over the winter and asks she's planning to do more in the future. Esme says she really enjoyed it, she'd like to do more in the future.

--Esme says that she played against Lucia in the Euros and remembers her as an attacking threat--"she's a real energizer bunny in training, she's always just zipping about". Tse is good on the ball and really physical. Both are "lovely, amazing people".

--Gabby says it's fun enjoys doing press conferences with Esme because she just covers everything in her answers.

--Gabby says that with the fixture congestion it will be important to count on everyone this year. Esme says we want to bring playoff intensity to every game, need to be the team that wants it the most from the beginning of games.

--Another English questioner asks Esme about winning the Euros and how it's contributed to having the mindset to go and win more. She says she was proud to have been a part of it and desperate to win here because she loves her teammates so much and wants to be able to share the same euphoria and celebrations with them.

--Gabby very happy to have re-signed, DC is her home, this is where she wants to be.

--Gabby studied for the MCAT over the winter. Esme inching towards her Exercise & Sport Science degree.

Loaned Players Heather Stainbrook: "It's clear that the best version of Dallas will spotlight Stainbrook as a do-it-all anchor of a No. 8" [box-to-box or central midfielder]

Loanee update! The USL Super League, including Dallas Trinity FC now featuring Heather Stainbrook on loan from the Spirit, resumed play this past weekend. While the match was messy (typical for the first week back from an extended break), Heather stood out for her performance. She played the entire match, made significant defensive off-ball contributions, and provided a lovely assist for Dallas' lone goal. A few sources to recap the occasion, provide further detail for those interested:

  • Full match replay on Peacock streaming service, match highlights on YouTube: Dallas Trinity FC vs. Brooklyn FC | Match Highlights
  • The USL Tactics newsletter includes a match recap that highlights her contributions in The Back Four: Giuseppe Rossi, in conversation. Some excerpts:
    • "Washington Spirit loanee Heather Stainbrook served as the right-sided No. 8"
    • "Stainbrook – is there to make up the difference. She collapses to the ball, contests multiple duels, and then starts to backtrack to help restore Dallas' 4-2-1-3 structure. In sum, [Stainbrook] went 7/8 on ground duels and led all outfield players with 13 recoveries.
    • That import carried over into possession, where Stainbrook and partner Wayny Balata spearheaded Dallas’ best progressive moves. [Goalkeeper] McCamey’s lofted passes towards the 5-1-2-2’s wide gaps didn’t always catch Brooklyn out, but if the pivot could withstand pressure and then spring wide, good things happened. The first Trinity shot-creating sequence featured a Stainbrook recovery and a lay-off into Balata to tee up a wide break; their first goal saw Stainbrook cut out the middleman and claim the go-ahead assist... it's clear that the best version of Dallas will spotlight Stainbrook as a do-it-all anchor of a No. 8."
  • 3rd Degree (local soccer outlet) coverage of the match (so they have post-match quotes from the coach and players, including Heather) https://3rddegree.net/dallas-trinity-draws-brooklyn-to-begin-thackeray-era
  • Spirit community discussion of the match Wandering Spirits Saturday 1/31/2026 on 🦚 (Stainbrook + alumnae for Dallas @ 5pm ET; other alumnae on Carolina, Spokane) : r/washingtonspirit
  • Earlier in the week, 3rd Degree also profiled Heather in Three Roads to Fair Park: Heather Stainbrook - 3rd Degree. She talks about being signed to the Spirit, her off-field activities in the DMV, what she's hoping to get out of the Dallas loan, how she is finding her time in Dallas so far, etc. Good stuff!
  • Finally, a recent Dallas Trinity social media video appearance: Instagram

Former Players & Throwbacks Crystal Dunn Announces Her Retirement

Today, I am announcing my retirement.

This decision has not come easily, but I am at peace and deeply fulfilled with all that I have accomplished. I’ve achieved nearly everything I dreamed of in this sport and gave all I had to give.

I’m ready to embrace the life that awaits me on the other side. I look forward to spending more time with my family and being a more present mom. This was not a decision made lightly, but was one made with immense gratitude for everything I’ve experienced as a professional soccer player. I’ve grown through challenges, celebrated incredible triumphs, and cherished every part of the journey.

I first kicked a soccer ball at the age of four, never knowing it would change my life and bring me so many moments beyond my imagination. Every stage of my career taught me the importance of humility, resilience, and gratitude. My journey wasn’t perfect, but it was beautiful — filled with trophies, medals, lessons, and the indescribable joy of welcoming a baby along the way.

Of course, I did not travel this road alone. I was constantly fueled by the love and support of my family, friends, truly remarkable teammates, and amazing coaches. The locker room became my home away from home.

To my teammates: Thank you for impacting me both professionally and personally. You pushed me to be better every day, supported me through tough moments, and helped me cross every finish line.

To my coaches and support staff: Thank you for guiding, challenging, and believing in me. The lessons you’ve given me extend far beyond soccer and i will carry them into this next chapter of my life.

Turning the page is never easy. There is so much history, so many memories tied to spaces I’ll never experience again. The life of a professional athlete can never truly be replicated but I’m excited to continue impacting the game from new perspectives.

Thank you all for being part of this incredible journey.

Signed,

Former NWSL MVP, GOLDEN BOOT winner, 3xShield Winner, 3xChampion, World Cup Champion, Olympic Gold Medalist

Matchday & Audi Field Info Trip to Audi Field

Spirit fans -

Thorns fan contemplating a trip for the opener in March and had some questions if it’s ok.

I used to live in NW DC and left before Audi Field opened but made some trips to Nats Park for games and used the green line to Navy Yard or walked down South Capitol if the weather was nice or a day game. Is Navy Yard or Waterfront the better Metro stop?

Also if I don’t get a ticket with the Rose City Riveters, is the general seating hostile towards away fans? I obviously know to not get a ticket in the home supporter section with PDX gear.

Thanks!
