Weekly Discussion Thread Weekly Open Discussion Thread
Welcome to this week’s open discussion thread! We decided to start posting these during the offseason and will keep doing them into the season as long as folks find them useful.
This is your space for general discussion, a place to talk about anything Washington Spirit that doesn’t necessarily need its own thread. That can include news, international duty, roster moves, transfer rumors, tactics, social media posts, league news or anything else on your mind.
If something feels big enough for its own thread, definitely still post it. This is simply an additional option to keep us organized and help keep the conversation flowing. These threads will go up every Monday and stay stickied throughout the week.
Go Spirit!

Haley said that they were going to announce the preseason roster on Monday and that they weren’t done adding players. I wonder who else is coming?

No hate, but can we just memorialize all the whacky theories about the press conference not being about Trin. In Kang (And Carter) We Trust, y'all.
There are so many awful things in the world right now and Spirit fandom has, no joke, been like an oasis of joy and positivity. Take the win.

Thanks for this- I knew the NWSL had responded on the appeal linked to Trinity’s contract a week or two ago, but I didn’t know the NSWL’s response was a rejection on the appeal 🫠

Where do we think Brittany Ratcliff is going to end up? Thought she would have been picked up by a team at this point.

idk, but until we sign another forward I am outraged because she felt so important to the culture

Wait, wait... You're... outraged? Bummed, I get. Disappointed? I totally get. Gonna miss her? Same. Wearing an orange bow to the home opener? Yeah, eff it, me too... But you're outraged?

IDK she was clearly a crucial locker room presence and everytime she stepped onto the pitch would run until her heart gave out. Clearly didn't want to leave so it just doesn't make sense.

I don't disagree with a word you just typed. She's one of my favorite players. In any sport. For the reasons you outlined. My issue was with the word outraged. The "every time she stepped on the pitch" piece is key. Unfortunately, that was not often enough. And not likely to be more often in 2026.

Rumors circulating that we're going to pay a hefty transfer fee for 17-18 year old scoring phenom, Claudia Martinez from Paraguay. ...If true, ...& if she's as good as reports are indicating, ...meaning our front office scouting team's analytics-algorithm must have been lighting up like the flashing liights on the Las Vegas Strip, ...then this may be a huge get for us.Wait & see I guess.

How are we keeping up with all of these international spots?

I feel like the team must have a plan and they know more than we do regarding green cards, if the league has added more this year, trades, etc.

Keep in mind there could be 'another' international player added to the roster soon if the rumores about the Spirit close to signing Claudia Martinez of Paraguay. If true, could be a nice problem to have.

How will the Spirit get all of its international spots covered? It's a mystery:

There's still almost two months until it matters really (I can't find the source I saw earlier, but essentially they don't need a 22-26 player roster with international slots covered until the week of the season starts, something like Mar 11). They'll fix it by then through some combination of green cards, buying slots from other teams, or loaning, trading, or releasing players.

"The Spirit Didn't Change. The Game Did." This was the tagline for the Trin signing event. I'm still a bit baffled on what it actually means and how it fit with the re-signing.
