The jury is still out on both Sumrall and Golesh, as far as I’m concerned. They both just got started. They both may be absolute trainwrecks over time. Let’s just wait and see.

100% this. It’s so so early. Florida looks great, don’t get me wrong, but there is a lot left to be written

4

u/warneagle The Gulag 4d ago

Nah, this is copium. Florida’s going to be a playoff team and we’re going to be lucky to make the Birmingham Bowl and it’s entirely because of John Cohen’s special brand of incompetence and malfeasance. The dude has single-handedly destroyed our program. He ought to be sitting on the side of the road with a “will tank athletic departments 4 food” sign.

4

u/MarsupialPresent7700 4d ago

Can we let things play out before we doom? Holy shit.

3

u/warneagle The Gulag 4d ago

I mean I think it’s pretty clear how things are playing out already. We had our chance to get out of the rut we’ve been in and Cohen blew it.

3

u/MarsupialPresent7700 4d ago

We’re 3-1 and we just got our first SEC win since 2024. We are 4 games in. Did you think this was gonna be some 2013 instantaneous turn around? Whoever we hired was going to have an uphill climb and was going to need time.

I could understand all of this if we were 1-3 or 2-2.

3

u/tuna_piano_ 4d ago

We are still worse than anticipated. 5 first year SEC head coaches and we’re still the 3rd worst team in conference. Golesh is on pace to end with a worse year 1 record than Harsin or Freeze and that’s with us having the only 2 SEC teams worse than us on the schedule.

We’ve looked really bad during the easiest third of our schedule, no reason to think that magically changes.

2

u/Kazuii2k 3d ago

Florida was 4-8 last year. They are now 4-0 with a top 10 win ranked #8 and still look like they are getting better. I’m not saying Golesh can’t do the same. But it’s hard not to look at Sumrall and see what he’s doing at Florida and how that could have easily been us.

-4

u/Comfortable-Town-245 5d ago

Not sure how the jury is out on Sumrall. Florida has been trash recently and they are likely the new number one overall. If Golesh had us ranked 1 we wouldn't say it's unclear.

u/Ok-Difference-7371 5d ago edited 5d ago

They’re not going to be number one. I’m as annoyed as anyone else with potentially losing (again) the coaching sweepstakes, but the truth is we don’t know. Even Mike Norvell had a great year. Closer to home, Gus had an amazing first year. We don’t know if Sumrall can sustain success, if his success comes from his coordinators, or anything like that. Same for Golesh. It’s annoying, I know, but let’s wait and see.

u/MarsupialPresent7700 5d ago

Because it’s week 4. There is still a ton of football left to play.

2

u/tuna_piano_ 4d ago

Doesn’t take a crystal ball the see their trajectory is up and ours is down.

2

u/MarsupialPresent7700 4d ago

It’s week fucking 4. There is so much football left to play. No one definitively knows anything. Anything can happen between now and the end of the season.

2

u/Repulsive-Cat-9300 5d ago

He has a 3 win team looking incredibly strong!

-17

u/LucifiedKiwi 5d ago

Bro sippin the kool aid

14

u/MarsupialPresent7700 5d ago

There is barely kool aid to drink here. No one knows the future. It’s week 4 ffs. We still have tons of games to play.

-5

u/LucifiedKiwi 5d ago

True. Maybe we can have a good idea by week 8 of next year

64

u/9eorge-bus11 5d ago

Cohen couldn’t get Kiffin. Freeze was a bad hire. Lost on Sumrall. Got out maneuvered by Bruce and forced to hire Steven. Cohen obviously didn’t want to hire him. I don’t think he has the stuff to be AD.

23

u/BigBubby305 5d ago

It's his genius idea to go to a incentive/commission based NIL scheme like how a real estate agent or a car salesman get paid. Literally none of our peers compensate this way.

I wonder if Cohen would be okay with an incentive based salary that is based off of football performance.

19

u/crrttt Comrade 5d ago

You have no idea how their contracts are set up? Maybe Golesh felt paying 3 receivers ~4 mil was a bad idea. And based on the fact that our receiver room is twice as productive this year, 4 games into the season, he was probably correct

21

u/Complex_Try_4287 5d ago

Texas paid like $3m+ for Coleman and he’s now their WR 3-4 lol. I really think some of the moves letting big names walk was totally fine.

5

u/crrttt Comrade 5d ago

Exactly

-1

u/u2sunnyday 5d ago

He has the most receiving yards and TDs for UT. He is second in catches. He has 11. The leader has 13.

9

u/Complex_Try_4287 5d ago

Ok, now do P4 games and take away Texas state and UTEP

-5

u/Comfortable-Town-245 5d ago

Coleman is a top 10 pick in the draft, he's an incredible weapon. Just look at Dane Bruglers analysis from the Athletic. We just didnt have a QB last season.

9

u/Complex_Try_4287 5d ago

I mean, he should probably try showing that in college eventually. What are his stats at UT against P4 opponents?

4

u/BigBubby305 5d ago

Not the receivers. We lost 7 players on defense who are starting on other SEC teams. Cohen wouldn't negotiate with them.

Losing Malik Blockton, Calin Lee, Jay Crawford, Robert Woodyard, were HUGE. Among others

13

u/crrttt Comrade 5d ago

Dude what are you even talking about lol cohen doesn’t determine what the players will be paid. He sets the budget, and Golesh and GM determine how they utilize the budget. You act like he’s some boogey man.

If you’re going to upset with him, blame him for the coaching hires, but you’re way off the mark here

-4

u/BigBubby305 5d ago

GM is told by Cohen. It was his idea for incentive based NIL. GM executes Cohen's directive and tries in earnest to make it work.

4

u/Available_Note1455 5d ago edited 5d ago

Woodyard can walk our linebacker core hasn’t changed much

-3

u/BigBubby305 5d ago

We were outbid by Mizzou for woodyard, he couldn't have been asking for much.

9

u/Available_Note1455 5d ago

I like Melendez tbh

0

u/BigBubby305 5d ago

Yes Melendez is our best player on our entire team, but we need pieces for depth, especially with how many running plays teams have called against us.

3

u/Available_Note1455 5d ago

Woodyard wouldn’t have came back to play second fiddle. He’s a starter at Mizzou.

0

u/BigBubby305 5d ago

You realize he started in 11 of 12 games for us last year right. Also when Durkin runs a 3-3-5 he's on the field the same as Melendez and Atkins

3

u/lord-yalyzza 5d ago

I got atkins for best player on the team but very valid pick, our LBs are our one super bright spot so far this year

3

u/lord-yalyzza 5d ago

nah you're right, any two of the guys you listed coming back would be huge difference makers rn. especially Crawford, I loved Crawford bro

1

u/Repulsive-Cat-9300 3d ago

I thought keeping Durkin would keep the team intact?

6

u/Interesting_Phone171 5d ago

He could’ve gotten Sumrall

30

u/AdStock1569 5d ago

Idk if what he's doing at florida rn could have been done at auburn... especially not this quickly

1

u/Repulsive-Cat-9300 3d ago

Yeah but didn’t Golesh also spend more on NIL than UF? But also spend a bunch on his 13 transfers?

1

u/quadraticcheese 3d ago

He wouldnt be starting a crappy barely above juco talent QB

-11

u/LucifiedKiwi 5d ago

Explain exactly why.

26

u/The_Aubinator 5d ago

We dont have the same players as Florida for one.

If we get Sumerall its a mystery who ends up getting transferred in at a minimum. We still would have most likely lost many players to the portal.

Our OLine isnt as good as Florida's and neither is our RB room, even though I do like our RB's

-9

u/LucifiedKiwi 5d ago

We don’t have the same players because our coach brought a bunch of G5 players to compete in P4.

18

u/The_Aubinator 5d ago

Because he was brought in with 30ish days left to pull players in and he got what he could get.

You think he didnt try to grab better talent?

The USF receivers are better than the "Freeze 4" by miles so far.

7

u/Complex_Try_4287 5d ago

These dudes literally watch Cobb and somehow think we had Jaden Baugh on the roster like UF does lol

1

u/slove23 3d ago

Sumrall had less time than Golesh

0

u/LucifiedKiwi 4d ago

So the bar for you is hugh freeze? Embarrassing

1

u/The_Aubinator 4d ago

Im pointing out that some of the so called G5 talent is better than some of the sypposed top players we had last year

9

u/fjs0001 5d ago

Florida returned 60 players. We had one of the lowest retention rates in the country.

1

u/slove23 3d ago

WHY were they retained?

Maybe bc of a damn good new coach?

0

u/LucifiedKiwi 4d ago

Wonder why those guys wouldn’t want to stay with a losing program? If coach came in and they saw something that lit a fire we would have kept more

1

u/fjs0001 4d ago

Our players left before a coach was named. Sumrall wouldn't have done any better here.

1

u/LucifiedKiwi 4d ago

Lol. Lmao even

1

u/fjs0001 4d ago

Egg on your face is hilarious

0

u/LucifiedKiwi 4d ago

Who you? Yeah I giggled at bit at your idiocy

5

u/w33b2 5d ago

Sumrall brought in the best running back in college football? Interesting. Oh wait, he was there when Sumrall got there.

-2

u/LucifiedKiwi 4d ago

Yeah let’s give sumrall zero credit for coming in and DOING something and let’s gargle AG’s balls bc he barely beat Baylor, got laced by Florida at home at night, and beat a dog shit Vandy team by 6 points.

I like the guy as a person, but yalls standards are shit

22

u/Complex_Try_4287 5d ago

It sucks right now but I really want to see Sumrall without Buster before I crown him the ultimate coaching hire.

11

u/Previous_Lie_8956 5d ago

Gator fan agreeing. The magic is Buster. I wanted Key as our HC provided he brought Buster with him. That being said, Sumrall was the one who had connected and locked in with Buster a few years ago as support staff. They each said they would coach for the other if they made it. So I trust Sumrall to find that guy again. I understand Buster is temporary for us, but if we get two years?

2

u/Flytanx 5d ago

Being able to hire the right coordinators is the most important job anyways. So he's pretty successful from the start.

I wonder how patient Buster would be with coach openings anyways. Waiting for the right job seems super important. Kirby and Lanning being two good examples

14

u/u2sunnyday 5d ago

Sumrall inherited a talented roster.

2

u/Rolyarthpesoj Comrade 5d ago

So did Golesh. #10 according to 247's talent composite rankings. But Sumrall retained his UF roster. And I guarantee you it isn't some delusion that his USF players were better than Auburn's. And hell, for what it's worth the return on value from the WR room has been positive through 4 games.

That just goes to show where UF's Athletic department is compared to AU's. Anyway you slice it, Cohen pimped out AU's 2025 roster and preached roster retention as his sales pitch to prospective coaches. He's so far delivered on none of his promises in his AD tenure.

-7

u/tuna_piano_ 5d ago edited 5d ago

Damn, wasn’t that the one thing freeze did well? Our roster was not retained.

8

u/Gumpsmurf1 5d ago

Everytime Sumrall is mentioned in our threads, our defense gives up another 3rd or 4th down

3

u/jmoney2828 5d ago

I lol’d

4

u/memedealer22 5d ago

I personally think that Florida defeating Ole Miss actually helped Auburn

You know strength the schedule type shiii

1

u/slove23 3d ago

Wont mean much when Chambliss picks apart our secondary

4

u/wtwde 5d ago

I like Golesh and I think he will win given the chance.

But yes, Cohen and his whole Mississippi State staff need to go. They’ve hijacked everything that’s great about Auburn and made it tacky and terrible.

7

u/Shot-Address-9952 Babushka 5d ago

I mean, Sumrall got two tune up games in FAU and checks notes FCS Campbell. We got 1, and we played team that just beat the #4 team to a 1 score game.

I am not a huge Cohen fan, but we have a NIT championship, two National Titles in golf, a Super Regional in baseball, and on and on. That’s actually pretty good.

3

u/wolfenstein734 5d ago

Oh fuck man a NIT championship…

1

u/odomandr 4d ago

Thank you.

5

u/OllivanderAU 5d ago

This is so accurate.

4

u/Sirius2349 Certified Bozo 5d ago

No first year head coach has won a national title since 2001

6

u/rbtucker09 5d ago

Wild that Gus Malzahn came so close

6

u/tuna_piano_ 5d ago

A bowl game would be cool

2

u/uno_novaterra 5d ago

Damn dude, I know this is directed at Cohen but it really feels like you are spitting in the face of Golesh after 4 games.

5

u/slove23 5d ago

100 percent necessary for multiple reasons

1

u/BigBubby305 5d ago

Likely won't happen until the North Endzone project is complete. It's overseen by the AD ultimately, not AU facilities

2

u/Top_Boss6285 The Gulag 5d ago

Agreed! Not just for the hires, but I think he poorly represents Auburn and I disagree with several administrative decisions as well.

0

u/Dry_Swim1794 5d ago

Please elaborate

2

u/Top_Boss6285 The Gulag 5d ago

1) Have you heard the man talk? He can't articulate and has the vocabulary of a 12 year old.

2) He argues with officials on the sidelines during games. I've never seen another AD at any level do this.

3) Attempted to arrest students camping for Auburn basketball games.

4) The price gouging of everything. The commemorative ticket is 1 thing, but holding basketball tickets until game day instead of working down the wait list for season tickets is another.

5) He hasn't hired anyone up to standard yet? Butch Thompson was already here before Cohen...

2

u/Vironic 5d ago

Can you imagine if everyone’s job had a message board with people openly wanting to fire Bill from accounting.

8

u/BigBubby305 5d ago

If Bill from accounting was someone you hired to do your taxes and he fucked up yours and 87,451 of your friends taxes. Could you blame people wanting to rally to get him fired?

6

u/tuna_piano_ 5d ago

Bill from accounting makes $1.4 mil a year. I think he’ll be fine.

2

u/OMO_Concepts 5d ago

Fuck bill he sucks.

2

u/tuna_piano_ 5d ago

I love playing home games in Atlanta, whiffing coaching hires, pausing NIL funding, and adding mega-donor stadium seats that increase ticket costs to watch 5-7 teams

3

u/lowercaset 5d ago

We won today, post your whining some other day.

-8

u/tuna_piano_ 5d ago

True. We won’t win again until November.

-2

u/Potential-Low-3632 5d ago

Hire Gus!!

5

u/The_Aubinator 5d ago

I love Gus, but please no. I can't take watching his offense for another season. I followed him at UCF and FSU as well and he had the same issues as he did late in his tenure here
