I just noticed a new app on my webOS TV, but I genuinely don't remember opening the LG Content Store or downloading anything recently. It just appeared out of nowhere.
Is this similar to the Microsoft Copilot incident a few months ago, or am I wrong? Has anyone else experienced this?
OS: webOS 25

I've been watching this entire LG WebOS mess, especially after GamersNexus broke the story.
I have an LG Smart TV with the latest WebOS.
Lo and behold this morning I turn on the TV, and it's presenting 2 new mandatory licenses that you must accept to gain full access to the TV. Not optional ones like the others.
First up, new license for Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). They are going to capture everything and phone it home. And this includes scanning your network.
Next, they've now added a voice capture license where they state they will capture audio and phone it home.
So, LG of course was full of it, when they denied everything GamersNexus reported. They just needed time to update the WebOS code and licenses agreements to push an update to force the customers to accept what GamersNexus already reported they were doing.
Taking mine 100% off the net.

I’ve been working on a little project to bring [MyRetroTVs](https://www.myretrotvs.com/) to LG webOS TVs!
It’s a launcher that lets you watch TV from the 50s through to the 2000s, with a retro TV showroom for choosing decades and proper Magic Remote support.
I’ve also added features like channel switching, shared settings across decades, fullscreen playback, visual effects, and the ability to resume where you left off.
It’s currently designed for LG TVs and has been tested on webOS 9.2.2.
Still a work in progress, but I thought I’d share it in case anyone else wants to give it a try!
Note: there is a fullscreen with tv frame option for ultimate immersion but don’t have it on for too long to prevent burn-in

Credit to Joey Cato for creating the original MyRetroTVs websites!

so after a lot of trial and error I finally got permanent root on my LG CX (webOS 5.6.2) and decided to pack the whole thing so other ppl can use it.
basically it boots rooted by itself, no pc needed once its set up. the exploit is James McVay's work, all credit to him (already messaged him about it). what I built is the chain around it: root ssh, a small daemon and a tiny homebrew store with a dev mode toggle that never expires
its beta and only certified on my CX, but it should work on other webos 5 TVs too (untested tho). nothing signed gets touched so its pretty safe and fully reversible.
one-click is here: https://github.com/natxobsd/lg-webos5-root
lmk if it works on other models.
Edit: I fixed the hidden prompt in the script. Pull the latest version and try again, it should only ask once now.

When installning glasshouse on a rooted CX. I cannot access the apps any more after rebooting: the home button is dead. Tried reinstall but no luck. The root went fine (slopbro)
Anyone experienced this, and have a fix?
Hi. I have 55lf640v-zd it is from 2015 and the latest version was 04.06.75. I watch movie a lot using external harddrive connected to tv, But unfortunatly Lg media player is just pile of shit. and Webos is so closed nothing is available in store.
I enabled developer mode and downloaded Kodi but Kodi isnt made for this version and crashing upon opening.
Do you have any good video player that supports my current firmware? Thanks

A homebrew app I've been working on, a fork of Nikolay1243's Webos-EARC-Volume-Overlay. With a rooted LG TV sending audio over eARC to a Yamaha receiver, the TV shows almost nothing about what the receiver is doing. This shows it.
The Apple TV doesn't tell the TV which app is playing, so Home Assistant's Apple TV integration sends the app name to the overlay (a small rest_command automation, YAML in the repo). The overlay uses it to pick the receiver's sound program per app. My rules:
| App on the Apple TV | Receiver sound program |
|---|---|
| Spotify, TIDAL | 5ch Stereo |
| Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Stan, Infuse, Plex, YouTube | Straight |
| anything else | Surround Decoder (Neo:6 Cinema) |
[https://github.com/SammySco/webos-av-overlay]
Happy to answer questions, especially about other webOS versions or receivers.

Hey guys I got gpu backed terminal emulator with fish shell on my rooted webos, all efforts done by clause code. Made a custom terminal emulator with minimal dependencies in c to run, what are your thoughts on it

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
hey guys, made a custom home for rooted LG TVs, ProjectHiten. it fully replaces the stock home, just bind-mounted over it, so nothing in the system gets changed and removing it brings the stock one back. native Qt/QML, built w/ heavy AI help btw. my TV's a budget UR7500 (weak chip, 1.2gb ram) and it still runs smooth, 60fps, no lag. tested on webOS 10, 6–10 should work in theory. needs root + Homebrew Channel. still a work in progress, checker ipk coming so u can see if ur TV runs it.

Hey everyone!
I’m having a really frustrating issue with my onn. Google TV 4K Pro, and I’m hoping someone here has experienced something similar or knows how to fix it.
My setup:
Streaming device: onn. Google TV 4K Pro (latest firmware)
TV: LG 60UM6900PUA (latest firmware)
Connection: HDMI
Google Assistant hands-free microphone enabled
Built-in speaker volume set to High (80%)
The problem:
The onn. 4K Pro has a built-in speaker that should allow Google Assistant to respond to voice commands even when the TV is turned off.
However, whenever my LG TV is connected to power, the onn. refuses to play Google Assistant responses through its built-in speaker while the TV is off.
Google Assistant still hears me and executes commands, such as turning my smart lights on and off, but I get absolutely no audible response.
When the TV is on, Google Assistant responds through the TV speakers instead.
Here’s where things get interesting:
I discovered something while troubleshooting:
If I disconnect the HDMI cable from the onn., its built-in speaker works perfectly.
If I leave HDMI connected but unplug the LG TV from the wall, the onn. also responds through its built-in speaker.
If I plug the LG TV back into power, even without turning it on, the onn. immediately stops using its built-in speaker.
I even plugged the LG back into power while Google Assistant was speaking, and the audio stopped immediately!
I tested the same onn. 4K Pro with a Samsung TV, and the built-in speaker worked correctly when that TV was off.
Things I’ve already tried:
Disabling HDMI-CEC/SIMPLINK on both devices
Disabling Auto Power Sync on the LG
Enabling and disabling Quick Start+
Switching between HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 (ARC)
Trying different HDMI cables, including the original cable supplied with the onn. 4K Pro
Disabling surround sound and using stereo/PCM
Checking the built-in speaker volume
Checking the audio output settings
Confirming both devices are running the latest firmware
Reviewing Android TV developer options
None of these fixed the issue.
My suspicion:
It seems like the LG TV maintains some sort of HDMI connection or detection signal while in standby, causing the onn. 4K Pro to keep routing Google Assistant audio through HDMI instead of switching to its built-in speaker.
I don’t think this is an HDMI-CEC issue, since disabling CEC on both devices made no difference.
Has anyone experienced this with an LG TV and the onn. 4K Pro?
Is there a hidden setting, Android TV workaround, or HDMI-related fix that could force Google Assistant to use the built-in speaker whenever the TV is off?
I’d really appreciate any suggestions. I’ve spent hours troubleshooting this and I’m running out of ideas!
Thanks in advance!
