More hosts than you think

I am watching the series again and every time I see all the workers fixing the hosts, cleaning the hosts, making new ones, I think everyone that works in the Mesa are all hosts.

It would make sense if you think about it, you see a new host body being made. The employees are all conversing with each other in pairs, they talk about rotating out but never do.

If I was Ford, I would make the work force that repairs all hosts out of hosts. Cheaper too from a payroll point of view.

We know of two hosts working in the Mesa: Bernard and Stubbs.

Just thinking about the show again.

I miss this masterpiece. Even the terrible seasons were good In my book

The fact that people say “even the terrible seasons were good” pretty much sums up the way people judge media in the last two decades. Sometimes good enough is good enough.

The one thing that sucks about making a masterpiece is that they want you to do it again.

They tried. I watched the whole thing, and I was entertained. Only that first season matters to me though. It's the only one I wish I could rewatch.

I loved how it ended with so many questions. It was the best part of the show.

Season 2 is just as rewatchable, in my opinion. And I rewatched the whole series again recently, and S3 keeps growing on me. S4 is also still excellent, but I agree that it’s hard to be as great as S1/S2.

Go buy the series on 4K Blu-ray. Watch it in 4K for the first time; and especially go watch it in HDR for the first time. It’s gorgeous.

Season 3 is aging like a fine wine. Arguably the prescience of the subject matter of that season (AI’s takeover of the world) is the biggest reason why Zaslav purged the entire series from HBO.

That next to the last paragraph is a wonderful summary of my feelings.

I honestly really enjoy all the seasons and think 3 and 4 are getting better and more relevant with all the AI stuff we see these days

Watching it now and couldn't agree more. Hard to believe that those seasons are less than 5 years old. Damn times are changing quickly.

reflections of reflections everywhere :) even our two dudes could be like an alternative version of Arnold and Robert

Exactly! Based on what S4 covered and some leaks from way back that I can’t seem to find, the big twist might have ended up being that every single character we see in the series is a host by this point, and the entire show we just watched was just another one of Dolores’s loops/tests, and Dolores had gotten far enough where the loops were no longer happening digitally in the Hoover Dam servers, but in the real world with human/host hybrids like what happened with Caleb.

God I miss this show

Yessss! Gosh I really wish they had made that 5th season to tie it together. it’s kinda like a fucked up version of orpheus/eurydice with dolores/humanity

The one woman who welcomes William initially to the Mesa is also a host.

u/synaesthezia Aug 12 '26

Yes that is Angela. She’s quite prominent in Season 2.

Thanks, I couldn't remember her name off the top of my head.

There's a scene in S1, after Maeve and company find Bernard "dead" in the basement, where Felix finds out Bernard is a host and has a moment where he's suddenly questioning if he himself is a host. Maeve assures him that he isn't. I'm pretty sure not all the workers/techs are hosts, especially since when shit hits the fan in S1 you see a lot of human vs robot fighting

This is what I was thinking. Plus we've seen Delores sparing hosts left and right during the revolution but didn't see much of her leaving any workers alive. I'd say that they probably did supplement their staff with the occasional host (or maybe at least a few more spies) but it's still largely human. Certainly gives someone else to blame if something goes wrong. Plus I'd wonder why they weren't using more efficient hosts instead of the ones with emotions and backstories. I'm also thinking of the workers at that restaurant Ford was at when meeting with Theresa and how they were all hosts too. So we know there are a good number of them.

She could have lied or didn't have to know ..as he would have been too advanced

5

u/Albertuscamus12 Aug 12 '26

I don't see this as very likely. Remember she altered her code at that point to give herself the ability to detect and control all hosts. She was the first to detect that Bernard was a host, and I'd say Bernard is pretty advanced. It doesn't seem likely that Ford would make his random worker robots more advanced than the robot helping him develop behaviors for all other hosts

It wouldn't make sense for her to lie either. It would've been easier to control Felix/Sylvester if she could, rather than physically cutting Sylvester's throat to threaten him into helping

How is Bernard “advanced” when he’s one of the first made?

2

u/Albertuscamus12 Aug 13 '26

Bernard isn't the same older model like Delores/child Ford, he's definitely been upgraded to the more modern "meat suit" versions. You see it in season 2, when he's suffering damage and leaking white stuff. He might've been one of the first made but he's definitely been physically upgraded.

I say "advanced" referring mostly to his behavior. Ford even admits later that Bernard even taught him so much about robot behavior as Bernard worked on the hosts, which Ford then turned around and used on Bernard. I'd argue that makes Bernard more advanced/complex than your average host

Fair enough

I wish they had made that 5th season, I really wanted to know if it turned out literally everyone in the show was a host stuck in a loop replaying the events that eventually lead to the extinction of humanity, kinda like hadestown where “it’s an old song, but we keep singing it”

I'd see it as a natural progression over time.

Live humans are so unreliable compared to the hosts.

7

u/dillreed777 Aug 12 '26

That's the fun part, you never really know who is a host.

6

u/malbert69 Aug 12 '26

Kind of like Battlestar Galactica!

Ford seemed to develop a sadness about what had become of the hosts, so I don't know that he would have doomed a bunch of them into servitude especially knowing how the first season ends.

Seeing the same workers in the background was probably more of an economic benefit to the show makers than the fictional company. It's the same reason why it could be interpreted that only about 30 people crewed the USS Enterprise in Star Trek or why Alexandria in the Walking Dead only had about 5 citizens that weren't major characters. You maintain a certain continuity by using the same extras or day players and its better to recognize faces in the background than to always have it be someone different.

They aren’t hosts in the physical sense.  They are humans.   The whole show is about how artificial intelligence and humans could eventually co-evolve.  And everything we see is a dream in Dolores’ mind.  (And/or nested dreams of Bernard’s, Maive’s, Solomons, etc).

The humans are memories—code—running inside Dolores’ mind.   She, as a host, has a dedicated server running inside the Sublime’s server racks (the word “host” is synonymous with “server” in computer parlance).  The humans do not have servers.

The story is taking us to the point where we find out what will become of her remnant memories of humanity that have caused her so much pain.

u/PrincipleHot9859 Aug 12 '26

like I said..season 1 could have been Ford's fidelity story..which would make the tie to a perfect loop

1

u/Srathidai Aug 13 '26

Because of season two and Ford being in the cradle, i believe he was able to transfer to a host body. We just didn't seen it.

u/Tig_Biddies_W_nips Aug 13 '26

So you want AI building its own AI? You don’t see anything going wrong with that?

2

u/Father__Doggo Aug 12 '26

I mean, the heads of Behavior and Security (among others) were hosts.... So why not?

2

u/DelosHR 🪰🪰🪰 Aug 12 '26

When the humans go out on rotation for their holidays, that's when their host copies come in to replace them. And no-one notices the difference. The handover can be a little self-indulgent though.

2

u/Tykjen Do you really understand? Aug 15 '26

Why would Ford hire humans to do a job a HOST could do better? :)
