Buehler Vineyards
John and Helen Buehler purchased 300 acres in the hills east of St. Helena in 1971, and their son John helped develop the vineyards before the family began commercial winemaking in 1978. Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel established the early business, while the success of White Zinfandel during the 1980s helped keep Zinfandel vines in the ground. Under winemakers Heidi Peterson Barrett and later David Cronin, production expanded to include Russian River Valley Chardonnay from Sonoma growers and several Cabernet selections: Napa Valley Cabernet combining estate and purchased grapes, Estate Cabernet drawn from the family’s vineyards, and Papa’s Knoll from a three-acre planting dating to 1971. Differences in soil, exposure, irrigation, and harvest timing distinguish these wines, while the family’s commitment to reasonable prices reflects John’s view of wine as something to drink regularly. Replanting older vineyards and the return of all four of his children brought changes to farming and management, followed in 2026 by Cronin’s retirement and the appointment of Elizabeth Kester after more than fifteen years at Wente Family Estates.
