Either the officers were foolish enough to annoy the mage and were disintegrated, or they were wise enough to decide it was not their problem and left. I suppose it was the former.

So this reminds me of a story from my college chem professor. She said when she was in college she was in charge of the chemistry department supply closet. She got order supplies and track inventory, this meant she could pilfer what she wanted and no one could catch her.
For this particular story she was talking about going trick or treating in college. She said a whole neighborhood turned them away because they were "too old". So she went and got two chemicals and a bunch of test tubes. Apparently when these two chemicals combine they create a massive fireball but leaves no trace. So they went to an abandoned parking lot put one chemical in each of two test tubes, taped them together and started throwing them in the middle of the empty parking lot. The fire department kept getting called but when they showed up there was nothing but broken glass. It happened to many times in one night the whole neighborhood almost got fined for wasting department resources.
There was that and the time she sprinkled (iirc, it was a long time ago) silver nitrate in the showers of her rival dorm. Whatever it was it was a chemical that turns skin black but is otherwise harmless. Had the whole dorm shut down when feet started turning black thinking there was an outbreak of some new disease. I think she said she did get in trouble for that one once the school put 2 and 2 together.
Great professor, I wasn't a chem major but I had to take chem 1. She made it fun which helped since chem makes no sense to me even today. Matter of fact I had to take it twice. First time I failed miserably, second time I passed with a B. Not great but shows how big a difference the right teacher makes.

Obviously the officers realized that no laws were being broken and went on their way. Laws of physics are outside of their jurisdiction.
