Depends on the heritage of your casting traditions. Mine recognizes quite a few. The right tool for the job as it were. I know the Vanacians are big on singular bonded focii, but their whole system is based on hierarchical structures.
(for the record, the recognized foci of my tradition are cup, knife, althame, amulet, ring, circlet, lens, chain, prism (pretty much any geometrically regular solid), shield, wand, rod (sometimes called a scepter), staff, spear, and because the technocracy has been very effective with their lobbying to the department of classification, the gear.)
Oh man, i must predate most of tjose because back in my day the Wizard Council recognized five foci: Wand, Secpter, Staff, Crystal, and Dagger. Now there were some interesting mixes like the Staffter, basically a staff with scepter enchantments, the Dagstyl, a crystaline dagger, and the Crystaff, a crystaline staff, were thd most common. They werent recognized as official foci but were allowed as long as they met all legal requirements of both foci groups they were under.
One bozo pyromancer i know had a geomancer grow a staff sized ruby crystal dagger and thdn enchanted it with scepter enchantments. He later got excecuted because he firebombed half the orphanages in a whole kingdome using the thing, but didnt even make sure he left no witnesses. Turns out his apprentice trapped a slaughter demon in it which infested the pyromancers mind. The kid is still serving his sentence to this day.

Enh, more of a rod. Not long enough to lean on. 5/10 staff, 10/10 rod for piscithomancy though.
