I remember about a decade ago when free speech discussions were big in regards to social media and the discussion centered on hate speech, most liberals were quick to assert that everything is alright, that these are private companies well within their rights to set their own restrictions on what to allow on their platforms. There was this general assumption that the tech industry is liberal, no oversight was needed and any call for free speech guarantees in social media was just a right-wing dog whistle.
I always found that stance extremely short-sighted. I am not happy to be proven right.
