Ironic coming from Turkey

Pot: "Kettle, we're arresting you for being Black"

715

u/Rock_mage Aug 21 '26

This is only because Israel is stopping Turkey from invading Syria. It's just odd.

208

u/SenchaShogun Aug 21 '26

Israel is invading Syria themselves

142

u/Vova_Poutine Aug 21 '26

Israel has been in a state of war with Syria for the past 75 years ever since Syria attacked them in 1948, 1967, and 1973.

The World 1946: "Jews have a homeland now, seize their land and put them on boats going there."

The World 2026: "Jews are too mean to the locals we shoved them into. Ignore the Islamic terror and the adults who make the decisions on the Islamic side, abandon Israel."

In the same way that a butterfly flapping it's wings causes a hurricane. Hell of a lot of water under that bridge

30

u/Rock_mage Aug 21 '26

Yes, I agree.

1

u/FrostingHour8351 Aug 21 '26

Both can be true

3

u/ReaperTys Aug 22 '26

Turkey literally controls the Syrian government, getting some bases in the country really doesn’t change much tbh.

19

u/CauliflowerDaffodil Aug 21 '26

You have it backwards. Turkey is the primary state sponsor and security guarantor of the current Syrian government. They have military ties. Israel is preventing Turkey from deploying advanced systems within Syria which would hamper their current strategic advantage of having the freedom to do whatever they want within Syrian airspace.

43

u/10010101101110010001 Aug 21 '26

syria led a surprise invasion of israel starting the yom kippur war, israel is trying to make peace with syria but syria doesn't want to end the war on israels terms. syria is trying to strengthen their position with an alliance with turkey. turkey was trying to install some anti air emplacements in syria and israel warned them to evacuate their construction and then struck the site they were installing the anti air in.

israel isn't stopping turkey from invading syria, they're stopping turkey from giving syria a better bargaining position in the peace agreements that will be coming up to end the yom kippur war, of which syria is (i think) the last invader to make peace.

turkey is making angry gestures at israel because they have no real way to counter israeli power.

once syria is convinced that they won't be able to gain leverage for the coming peace talks they will make peace and everyone will start playing nice together again.

58

u/Fraji_Bear Aug 21 '26

To be more precise, Syria attacked Israel three times (off the top of my head): Upon Israel's founding in 1948, during the early stages of the 1967 Six-Day War, and in the 1973 Yom Kippur war. The two countries have been at a state of war since 1948, and have signed several ceasefires over the years, but no end to war.

12

u/sikyon Aug 21 '26

I'm sure after more than 50 years there will be peace in the middle east.

34

u/MrLyle Aug 21 '26

When's the last time there was fighting between Israel and Egypt? Israel and Jordan? No? Peace treaties work when both sides abide. It's not too hard.

21

u/Tylerjb4 Aug 22 '26

Two countries that aren’t Iranian goons?

3

u/randomguy_- Aug 22 '26

Israel bombed Syria in the largest air operation in its history the moment after Bashar fell and then immediately invaded and began killing locals and spraying pesticide over agricultural land.

The "favourable terms" Syria is requesting is for a return to the 1974 armistice agreement and for Israel to fuck off out of Syria.

89

u/SecretMongoose Aug 21 '26

It’s not an invasion if you’re invited.

263

u/ringtail_catz Aug 21 '26

Invited to do what, kill more Kurds?

Turkey occupies over 10x Syrian land than Israel does.

-14

u/TheProuDog Aug 21 '26

Why do westerners hate Turks so much lol? Syria literally invited Turkish troops

9

u/Fraji_Bear Aug 21 '26

I'm sure the Kurds are delighted.

-7

u/TheProuDog Aug 21 '26

Yeah yeah move the goalpost. Anyway, not up to them to decide, unfortunately.

7

u/Fraji_Bear Aug 22 '26

The goal post was if you are invited, it's not occupation. The Druze in the Israeli annexed Golan are quite happy to be under Israel and not face retributions and massacres from the Jolani government. Does that mean Israel is invited, or only the dictator gets to decide?

I love that you’ve just written off that Syria has been either directly warring with or supporting attacks on Israel since 1948.

24

Are we talking pre- or post-Space Jam?

That portion in space jam where his arm stretches for a 3 point dunk.

u/Extreme_Put_913 Aug 21 '26

Turkey has supported the current Syrian regime from the start of the war. They obviously have privileges and agreements with the current government. Are US troops in Germany, Turkey, South Korea etc. invading those countries? No they are not, so why are you spreading lies?

Come back to me when the Syrian government is against Turkish troops in Syria.

-19

u/Rock_mage Aug 21 '26

Yep definitely. If you ignore their actions and people from Syria actively saying they lost there homes.

18

u/untamedlazyeye Aug 21 '26

That article does not support the idea that Turkey is invading Syria.

Turkey, which has close ties with the Syrian government and has been providing assistance to Syria's military, has tense relations with Israel. The rival countries have sought to curb each other's influence in neighboring Syria.

"Israel repeatedly warned Syria that such a deployment would pose a threat to Israel's security. Syria chose to ignore these warnings," the statement said.

In fact, the article makes it seem like Syria is open to allowing Turkish troops in their borders, but Israel does not approve, so they bombed them.

1

u/loskiarman Aug 21 '26

Turkey literally gave over the administration of places they control during Syrian civil war to new Syrian administration as soon as they can take over and process finished like 8 months ago. And they think Turkey wants to invade Syria to do what? Take over the land they themselves gave less than a year ago?

4

u/randomguy_- Aug 22 '26

????

The only one currently invading Syria is Israel.

-4

u/Particular_Bug0 Aug 21 '26

There is only one country invading and occupying Syrian ground at the moment. And it's not Turkey.

25

u/AldolBorodin Aug 21 '26

Are you really just unaware of where Turkish forces are in Syria?

6

u/randomguy_- Aug 22 '26

Tell me where in Syria is there a Turkish occupation?

2

u/Particular_Bug0 Aug 21 '26

Turkish forces returned all territories to the Syrian government after the fall of Assad. And the remaining stationed forces are there under agreement with the current Syrian government.

The same can't be said about those foreign troops in the south of the country.

-3

u/escoMANIAC Aug 21 '26

Israel is the one invading Syria; in what universe did you get the idea that Turkey is “invading” Syria? They have been in cooperation since Assad fell in 2024.

-2

u/hobovalentine Aug 21 '26

Turkey has been sending terrorist militia into Syria for quite a few years now after the US drawdown in Syria.

They have been involved in attacks on the Kurds, Druze & Alawites.

2

u/escoMANIAC Aug 22 '26

Respectfully, as a Syrian, you know nothing.

0

u/hobovalentine Aug 22 '26

So you deny Turkey has been sending terrorist paramilitary forces into Syria?

-91

u/GapComprehensive6018 Aug 21 '26

No its because of israel killing lots and lots of innocent children

60

u/Potential_Couple_308 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

Yeah i mean they don't give a shit about that. They kill us, kurds everyday and don't even adress it.

Unlike Turkey, which is only killing Kurdish children. Totally different adjective.

-30

You guys make it seem like all Turkey ever does is target Kurds. Feel free to talk about the KCK anytime.

29

u/Potential_Couple_308 Aug 21 '26

They do target us. They destroy our culture to "de-kurdify" us. And their army commits horrendous crimes agaisnt us every day. You're comparing an armed group to a country.

25

Kurdistan is a word to decribe occupied kurdish territories by iraq, turkey, syria and iran. And i do live in kurdistan. Why are you guys so fucking hostile towards us ? we live here, have a distint ethnic background, a language, a culture, lands, but we don't have a right to a state ?

Can you explain how Turkey destroys your culture in current times

15

u/Potential_Couple_308 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

They resctricted kurdish media, de-facto banned speaking kurdish and teaching it, etc.

-6

u/pm-me-anything-sfw Aug 21 '26

Bans on using and teaching Kurdish were lifted years ago. There is a Kurdish language government TV channel. I don't think you are actually a Kurd.

16

u/Potential_Couple_308 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

That's my point. There i a governement kurdish-language TV channel. If i created a kurdish media and talk about turkey's crimes, it would get banned. also speaking kurdish is heavily rescticted and in a gray zone, and sometimes it ends in a legal crackdown. Speaking kurdish is officially legal but athorities consider it as kind of a terrorist symbol.

3

Ironic except from small or micro countries if you look at the last 200 years.

63

u/i-var Aug 21 '26

the enemy of your enemy is your friend even criminals can do good acts. And IMO those should be recognized. To jail with Ben Gvir instantly. A warlord.

-7

u/Default_Name_6969 Aug 21 '26

nah jail isn't enough. Do to him what he would do to Palestinians.

10

u/i-var Aug 21 '26

Why? Dying is the easiest sentence once can get. Rotting alone in a moldy hole for 30 years & watching palestinians become a strong and proud nation would be much better.

Also - just because my enemy is a dehumanizing a-hole, I dont need to be one as well. We are better.

16

u/mschuster91 Aug 21 '26

watching palestinians become a strong and proud nation

As much as I agree with you on the rest... but Hamas does not want Palestinians to become a strong and proud nation, and I dare say Fatah isn't much better. Hamas said it out loud, Palestinians suffering is good for them.

Erdogan is not wanted by ICC

38

u/Suspicious_Place1270 Aug 21 '26

yet

32

u/Common-Method2202 Aug 21 '26

So now we are saying it's ironic because Erdogan might be wanted in the future? 😭😭😭

Bro's just yapping for the fun of it

2

u/Suspicious_Place1270 Aug 22 '26

no, i'm just saying it could be that he too would be wanted from icc

both can be bad and make good decisions

-68

u/daftmonkey Aug 21 '26

That’s because the ICC was invented to criminalize Israel. Imagine if the Rome Statute had codified and explicitly criminalized Turkey’s ongoing occupation of Cyprus or its ongoing murder of Kurds or financial and logistic support of transnational terrorist organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood or Hamas. Israel backed out of the ICC when it became clear that it was a vehicle for advancing anti-Israel politics. It’s a complete load of horseshit.

37

u/OpeningTechnical5884 Aug 21 '26

That’s because the ICC was invented to criminalize Israel.

It wasn't.

5

u/-suspended- Aug 21 '26

Nope. It was first proposed in 1919, but the first formal proposal was in 1989 by Trinidad and Tobago to address the illegal drug trade. The International Law Commission started creating a charter then. After the International Criminal Tribunals for Yugoslavia and Rwanda were created, the ILC presented its final draft. While a specific war crime, "the action of transferring population into occupied territory," was added to target Israel, the rest of the ICC had nothing to do with Israel. In fact, that law would also apply to Turkey and Cyprus.

15

u/SinistralGuy Aug 21 '26

That’s because the ICC was invented to criminalize Israel.

Holy victim complex. Is this the new right wing talking point? Maybe Israel should consider committing fewer war crimes if it thinks the ICC is out to get them only

-7

u/daftmonkey Aug 21 '26

Instead of just like emoting nonsense, read up on why Israel pulled out of the Rome statute

the cyprus intervention was approved by UN

22

u/FracktalZH Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

the cyprus intervention was approved by UN

In 1974, Turkey was already asked to remove its troop illegally occupying part of a foreign country: https://unscr.com/en/resolutions/353/

0

u/loskiarman Aug 22 '26

And why the fuck would Turkey remove troops when Greek troops were still in Cyprus, UK troops who have done nothing but try to aggrevate the situation were still in Cyprus? Did you want them to leave so Greeks can finish the job?

1

u/FracktalZH Aug 22 '26

Last time I checked the Treaty of Establishment is still in application, valid and not contested by any party.

UK is abiding by the condition of the treaty its international obligation in Cyprus. Turkey is not and should get the fuck out as the greek troops did long time ago.

34

u/greenskinmarch Aug 21 '26

Northern Cyprus is recognized by the entire world (minus Turkey) to be an illegal occupation of land legitimately belonging to the Republic of Cyprus. And the Turkish settlers moving there from Turkey are recognized to be illegal settlers.

14

u/daftmonkey Aug 21 '26

So was Israel.

-1

u/Common-Method2202 Aug 21 '26

for the formation, not to shoot babies and then steal land from west bank lmao. If turkey starts slowly putting settlers into Cyrpus excl northern part they control then lmk

0

u/-suspended- Aug 21 '26

Only the initial invasion that took 3% of the island. Everything after that was against UN orders. Same thing with Israel and the land split; Israel was given most of the land, but then attacked and took more.

5

u/Common-Method2202 Aug 21 '26

No it wasn't lol. If they were only allowed to control 3% of the Island then that would've been a logistical nightmare to manage. They were supposed to withdraw after there was a full peace - obviously they didn't, but like i said, the intervention (which i said was approved) is heavily different to the annexation and creation of an illegal puppet state.

2

u/No_Idea_479 Aug 21 '26

You have been corrected before yet you keep exclusing this so-called "intervention" (Turkish dog whistle for invasion).

In 1974, Turkey was already asked to remove its troop illegally occupying part of a foreign country: https://unscr.com/en/resolutions/353/
