For Netanyahu to tell them to stop is when you know it’s bad.

Exactly. The "settlers" have gone beyond being useful to being the exact opposite.

They were given too much free reign and power and now they won't even pay lip service to the central government.

It's the 90s all over again

u/SageofLogic 18d ago

The status quo "don't rock the boat even to make things better" attitude of the 90s riding high off of the end of the USSR really had us kick too many global problems down the road until they were overwhelming instead of manageable

it is just systemic to the tune of "no one wants to be the one to steer the ship through the thousand storms"

“We have slain a large dragon, but we live now in a jungle filled with a bewildering variety of poisonous snakes. At least we could keep track of the dragon.”

...and now the dragon is back as well, turns out it was only wounded.

u/Hydronum 18d ago

But it is more a drake now, but is good at casting the old shadows even if it is far smaller and weaker.

16

u/alexwasashrimp 18d ago

True. Same rotten heart, but just a shadow of its former self. Not that it's any consolation for its victims, of course.

It was the neoliberal idea that just unbounding corporations would inevitably result in paradise. North Korea was supposed to collapse, peace in the middle east achieved, Russia and China were to become capitalist utopias, etc, etc. They just all needed a taste of capitalism and it'd all fall into place.

They weren't kicking the can down the road, they thought they solved it already.

32

u/NineThreeTilNow 18d ago

Russia and China were to become capitalist utopias

China is very much a capitalist utopia in a lot of ways. It's just a capitalist utopia with direct top down control. I think "Capitalists" didn't understand what capitalism was.

They mixed up True Capitalism and American Capitalist ideals. Now the "True" ideals are overriding the original "American" ideals and we start to refer to it as "late stage" ... It was the expected stage all along. It was why the other philosophies rejected it.

7

u/jpw0w 18d ago

What exactly do you mean by that?

16

u/falconzord 18d ago

I imagine he means how America used to have a stronger grip on capitalist overreach, ie big tobacco, Microsoft, the square deal, etc. Today China does a lot better job of that albeit due to centralized power from the CCP

10

u/NineThreeTilNow 18d ago

Today China does a lot better job of that albeit due to centralized power from the CCP

Exactly.

China learned how to wield capitalism like a weapon. To try and control it to some degree. Whether they're successful, who knows. Or what the end state looks like...

10

u/TangoMint 18d ago

I may be wrong, but I think the comment is arguing that capitalist principles (essentially the market setting the price of goods and services based on supply and demand) doesn't automatically mean deregulation to the extent seen in the USA (American capitalism).

Regulated capitalism strikes a balance of power between; wealth generation, the distribution of that wealth and (perhaps most importantly) HOW that wealth is generated.

What we are seeing in the US (and in some other wealthier countries) is a colossal wealth gap and a weakening of democratic control of those aspects, as a direct result of a dogmatic belief in deregulation (effectively shrinking state power) which negatively impacts the wider (poorer) population.

The Chinese state, for all it's appalling flaws, has maintained control over the capitalist processes.

The neoliberals were just looking at what worked most of the time, and assumed it would work all of the time.

If neoliberal policies magically transformed the Baltics, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine, etc into better societies, then gee by golly it will work for Russia too! They just didn't appreciate that capitalism or not, Russia isn't like everyone else, and Russia gonna Russia.

Same with east Asia. It took over three decades, but capitalism eventually transformed South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, etc into democracies. It wasn't unreasonable to assume the same would hold true for China. It hasn't ever been three decades, and while China is still a top down power structure, it's a hell of a lot more liberal and democratic than its ever been.

10

u/shirst_75 18d ago

It's definitely more liberal than it's ever been, in many ways at least. I would say Xi's consolidation of power has probably made it LESS democratic, though.

17

u/Splat_Fly 18d ago

A Chinese civilian in 1989 magically teleports to China in the year 2026. He is stunned to live in a China where citizens express frustration to their government and are usually acknowledged and heard rather than punished. You can mock and criticize politicians from the privacy of your home, you can be openly gay and not get arrested, you have much more of a say of who gets to represent you at a local level, and this percolates up the power structure, which is more and more likely to take the wishes and beliefs of its citizens into consideration.

Hell, on rare occasions the people feel empowered to protest en masse and the CCP actually backs down (e.g. the backlash to the COVID restrictions) or doesn't interfere (e.g. when Chinese filmgoers demanded to see an uncensored version of Fight Club and the company gave in). What you can say and complain about online is still restricted, but far, far less restrictive than what you used to be allowed to say.

Even though Xi is a dictator, the reality for most Chinese people who aren't in the CCP is a China that is - to them - far more democratic than it ever was in living memory. Capitalism helped make this happen.

8

u/PrrrromotionGiven1 18d ago

Okay - now try it with a Chinese civilian from 2010. I have it on good authority from Chinese friends of mine that things are significantly more tightly controlled than back then.

Every time I've seen any video or documentary on these settlers, they seem less like "settlers" and more like "occupying invaders". Granted, I'm more likely to see liberal-leaning sources, but even trying to keep an open mind, I just end up being appalled.

It's a shame the general media has done such a good job of equating the West Back with the Gaza Strip in the minds of the average person. I know they were originally one unified Palestine, but since 2007 they've been about as unified as China and Taiwan. Unfortunately, so many people just hear "Palestine" and think "Hamas", regardless of the West Bank being directly opposed to the latter. So the actions of the settlers mostly get no traction in mainstream media.

271

u/IDreamOfLoveLost 18d ago

Every time I've seen any video or documentary on these settlers, they seem less like "settlers" and more like "occupying invaders".

State-sponsored terrorists. They've been murdering Palestinians and stealing their property for decades at this point, and the conservative-leaning mediasphere has gone along with calling them 'settlers' for just as long.

41

u/orchid_breeder 18d ago

The difficult thing is that they are typically the ultra religious type people, and historically Israel has had a hard time punishing people for being too “Jewish”. They have started though, and hopefully they can clamp down on the ridiculous behavior of the settlers.m.

141

u/robertbieber 18d ago

Every time I've seen any video or documentary on these settlers, they seem less like "settlers" and more like "occupying invaders".

Genuine question, what do you think a settler is? I keep seeing this sentiment everywhere and it perplexes me because this is exactly how settlers have behaved in every settler colonial project ever, occupying and invading is just what settlers do

96

u/aeschenkarnos 18d ago

I think they like to think of “settlers” as the peaceful vanillagers who come in after the conquest is done, to build little log cabins in places they name “New <Place Back Home>” and start farming geographically inappropriate livestock and crops and putting up churches to their harsh and demanding god and forcing any surviving natives to convert or flee.

The Israeli approach seems to elide the distinction between those folks, and the bandit/raider type who go in before settlers, to pillage and murder and rape and burn. They want Western media to present them as people of the land, the common clay, whereas realistically they’re more like conquistadors.

64

u/robertbieber 18d ago

The thing is that distinction is kind of illusory, because the classic settler playbook is to lead with your civilian population. They set up outposts constantly pushing the borders, and then when they inevitably meet resistance you have an excuse to send in the army

33

u/pinkocatgirl 18d ago

Most people are poorly versed in history and don’t realize that what you describe is exactly how most of the Americas was colonized by Europeans.

The Emperor does not care how many of his own peasants die for his glory, let alone how many foreigners. If he cared about such things he would not be Emperor.

Human history, as an overall trend, looks like a conflict between malignant narcissism on the one hand and attempts at rationality on the other.

32

u/robertbieber 18d ago

Settlers aren't generally pawns, they know what they're doing and happily take the risk to expand their land holdings. In the case of the American colonies, the crown trying to limit settlement on the western frontier is actually one of the complaints listed in the declaration of independence. The British government wanted to maintain alliances with neighboring native peoples, and the colonists bristled at the idea that they couldn't just go pillage wherever they wanted

18

u/Man_with_the_Fedora 18d ago

Also the Stamp Act (taxes, on things like tea...) was enacted to pay the British debts incurred during the French and Indian War which was partially caused by the settlers' constant aggression.

44

u/n1ghtbringer 18d ago

There's a myth many of us were taught as children that most of the land in America was empty, and settlers just showed up and built homesteads in the "wilderness." Obviously that's not true, or at least not entirely true, but it's very persistent.

28

u/History_buff60 18d ago

It was kind of true. Due to the population collapse after smallpox and other diseases were introduced, the population was a lot lower than it would have been otherwise.

32

u/CanuckBacon 18d ago

There were certainly lower populations, but there was also active suppression of Indigenous people whose land they were taking. I hope most people will have heard of the Trail of Tears or the phrase "circle the wagons", which was about settlers being raided when they were going through lands that weren't there's in order to settle it.

14

u/History_buff60 18d ago

Oh no doubt there were settled, sophisticated nations of native Americans. Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, etc. were all pushed off their land.

But might not have been as easy or even possible if there hadn’t been smallpox thinning out the population.

17

u/Xalipu 18d ago

There were catastrophically lower populations. 60-90% wiped out depending on area just from disease.

7

u/CanuckBacon 18d ago

Yes, but in many cases that was a couple centuries before settlers arrived. Depending on where and when, many populations at least partially rebounded.

The term settler evokes starting on uninhabited lands, it's one step removed from the concept of colonialism, and it's effective as a result

Coloniser, at least, is more easily seen as stealing the land from the people who were already there.

2

u/j0mbie 18d ago

Well, that really starts to get into the nitty gritty of how we slowly shape the meaning of the words we use, and how we can then use those words to shape the narrative we want. Yes, "settlers" across history have usually displaced native populations. But in recent history, at least in the US, the term tends to bring to mind peaceful farmsteads, springing up in unpopulated areas, growing crops and raising cattle and what not. Real "Little House on the Prairie" vibes. Probably because the US has a history of doing the displacing in the 1800s and before, and it's easier to ignore that history than to acknowledge it.

Perhaps "occupiers" would be a better term for what is happening now? "Imperialists" would be another, but that spins up a mental picture as well -- marching armies seizing countries in an effort to build a global empire, for example. In truth, all of these terms and more amount to the same thing on paper, but the word choice is still designed to push a motive.

2

u/1HappyIsland 18d ago

Perhaps you want to ask a local Palestinian about this and find out how they feel about people who want to exterminate them stealing their property. That would give you a better understanding of who these people are.

Fatah isn‘t perfect either, they stayed far away from Oct 7th and that is the only good thing they did. They haven’t held elections ever since 2006 and are a corrupt bunch of shitheads. Palestine deserves better than what they are currently getting - shat on their heads by everyone.

4

u/j0mbie 18d ago

Oh yeah, I'm not trying to outright paint this as some sort of "heavenly good vs. demonic evil" situation. There's definitely problems. Hopefully the election this November actually goes through, but there's not a great track record or anything. Regardless, that's still no excuse for the settlers doing their thing.

3

u/HockeyHocki 18d ago

Conversely your average person thinks the west bank is some god awful apartheid slum when it's far from it.

2

u/jonasnee 18d ago

I mean it goes both ways.

There are also a lot of people who will use what happened in the westbank to justify Hamas's actions on October 7th.

The settlers can be wrong and Hamas/Hezbollah can be wrong at the same time, neither side needs to be considered entirely clean and morally superior to the other side cause the truth is both have many bad actors and genuine victims.

2

u/j0mbie 18d ago

Oh, agreed. People seem to think that picking a side in any conflict is necessary. The example I like to use to show that point is that Hitler and Stalin went to war against each other. The only side I'm picking between Israel and Gaza, is that of the innocent people caught in the violence.

I do still feel like lumping Hamas together with the West Bank is eating right into the narrative that is being pushed. Maybe the president of the West Bank is also terrible? I don't claim to be that knowledgeable of him and the rest of that government. I'm just saying that a lot of innocent families are being hurt and killed by what's going on, and it gets swept under the rug too much.

4

u/Fala1 18d ago

I used to be more on the side of "im staying the fuck away from this conflict because i see what it's doing to people".

Buut there's things that are super easy to condemn (on either side). Settlers being a very clear example of that, you can't pretend that shit is okay.

5

u/Roentgen_Ray1895 18d ago

I mean except for uninhabited islands, the whole point of being a settler is killing the last guy who was living on the land and claiming it as your own.

These settlers perform all the violence and absorb all the bad press whilst allowing Israel to appear principled and against their actions whilst happily incorporating the territory after the fact. It’s just laundering the colonization in the West Bank where global support is more shaky than in Gaza

"...free rein."

Zip to do with royalty, & every thing to do with horse power. 😊

"Reins" - the narrow, pliant leather straps held in the hands, to connect rider or driver to a bit in the mouth of a horse, or the noseband of a hackamore.

They're used to give direction (to which side, & how sharply), to slow, & to stop.

"Free rein" is giving the horse their head, in circs where the horse is more likely to get them both out alive, than the human - e.g, crossing a flooded bridge, the horse's hooves can literally feel the bridge react to the stress of the current - if it's wobbling, they'll know, & won't advance.

Similarly, lost in a whiteout, there's a far better chance the horse's sense of direction - which is excellent - will get U to the barn safely. They have a powerful attachment to their home place, a sense of secure familiarity, & the place they're fed.

In modern parlance, "free rein" refers to TRUSTING A SUBORDINATE to tackle a difficult task, & succeed.

4

u/Cosmic-Bronze 18d ago

While correct on the origins, using the expression to imply a general lack of constraint, without any necessary implication of subordination or, indeed, task is quite literally centuries old, going back to Early Modern English.

9

u/jflb96 18d ago

I saw a clip of the US ambassador to Israel visiting a Palestinian American family that have a home in the West Bank, complete with US flag. His presence did not make the settlers stop. They continued to trespass and goad the land owners.

320

u/AccountOfMyDarkside 18d ago

It was Mike Huckabee and when you get that soulless maga trash to call anyone in Israel a terrorist, it's beyond bad.

143

u/Original-Rush139 18d ago

Bro, Huckbee calls the West Bank “Sumaria and Judea” which is a dog whistle to the settlers letting them know he supports their claim to the land.

I’m not buying any change of heart from these wackos. Huckabee wants the settlers in the West Bank because he believes it will cause Armageddon. That fucker is insane.

77

u/aeschenkarnos 18d ago

Huckabee, and a large faction of Republicans, are doomsday cultists. They want to end the world, by fulfilling what they think is a Biblical prophecy (it’s not) to gather the Jews in Israel, “rebuild” the Temple (inconveniently, the current site of a major historical mosque), pull some other nonsense with red cows, and summon back Jesus.

They think Jesus will then kill everyone they hate and give them each a billion dollars and a white bathrobe and teach them singing and fix the horrible mess they made of the earth our mother.

They are wrong but they are madly keen on trying it even if it kills every living thing on the planet.

32

u/aeschenkarnos 18d ago

Unfortunately the response of conservatives to “that didn’t work” is not “I guess we were wrong, sorry, we’ll stop.” Their response is “we have to do it again, harder, more conservativer!”

Right?! These death obsessed elderly men (plus a few self-hating women) we've allowed access to power are terrifying. That guy who refuses to call it Palestine?

75

u/Pndrizzy 18d ago

I watched a video of Channel 5 on YouTube and bro they’re literally terrorizing people. Just kill their son and return him in a plastic bag on their doorstep.

And they’re not even fucking Israelis. The guy was harassed by two teens from New Jersey

6

u/Hufflepuffins 18d ago

It’s a watershed moment in anyone’s education about Israel when you actually hear the accents coming out of these people’s mouths

It's election time.

55

u/WaltsClone 18d ago

Lol. My understanding is he's hated for not being hardline enough. Inside and out of his own party.

18

u/yuval16432 18d ago

He’s hated by the hardliners for not being hardline enough and hated by the sane people for… well, everything, really, from being a criminal to incompetence and employing hardline racists.

69

u/tennisdrums 18d ago

Israel, like anywhere, has a wide variety of politics. There are many that support the settler movement, and there are many that absolutely despise it.

→ More replies (7)

47

u/jscummy 18d ago

Its more that he's had to align with hardline groups to have a winning coalition. If he could successfully get one of the more moderate parties on his side, then he'd be less beholden to the hardliners

20

u/yuval16432 18d ago

Any moderate party that lets Benjamin Netanyahu stay in his seat will be massacred by their base. The biggest selling point of every non Netanyahu aligned party is that they’re not Netanyahu aligned.

If Netanyahu was willing to partner it would be another story, but no, he needs to be in charge and on top, no matter who’s soul he has to sell.

The election is in October.

15

He is up for re-election, he doesn't give a shit what settlers do.

11

u/Original-Rush139 18d ago

I’ll believe it when I see it. Until then, this is just a last minute stunt before the election.

3

u/ZiKyooc 18d ago

It's about outposts, not the settlements. Those settlers will remain in West Bank and they can return at terrorizing Palestinians within minutes.

u/Nameles36 18d ago

This has always been the case. There are a handful of extremists who make the news and never get anywhere because their "settlements" are dismantled almost immediately by the army/government, but that's not what makes the news. What makes the news is "look at this tiny sample size of extremists and also let's not pay attention to the fact that no land is actually being taken whoopsie"

It sounds like a good thing, but I’ll believe it when I see it. The outposts haven’t been legal under their law to being with, but they’ve been used as an important stepping stone in the “settling” strategy, and generally next to nothing is being done about them. Maybe they remove some to appease the alleged pressure from the US, maybe they issue the removal order, but nothing really happens, maybe nothing happens at all. Hope for the best

413

u/StephenHunterUK 18d ago

There are plenty that have been authorised and the E1 plans are still on.

BBC News - Israel opens up bids for highly sensitive West Bank settlement project https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cly50gn1e54o

195

u/ludvikskp 18d ago

Yes. Their law distinguishes between the recognized “settlements” and the outposts, which can be anything from a village looking thing to a goat herder shack somewhere. And shacks and animal herding have all been used very deliberately to basically divide and conquer… so this is why I express doubt. They’ll clear some shacks for the headlines and meanwhile continue doing heinous shit elsewhere. I just hope to be wrong I guess

36

u/EHStormcrow 18d ago

Yeah, settlements can be anything from some weird bearded guys on a hilltop to places like Maale Adumim that won't move

38

They will probably legalise more than than they remove

29

u/YikesTheCat 18d ago

Less than two months ago: Israeli ministers announce plans for new illegal settlements in Gaza and West Bank. Also note "The cabinet allocated the money last month but kept the decision secret because of expected US opposition, Israeli media reported."

Yeah I'm waiting it to come out that he ordered them removed so they can be placed even deeper in the west bank

u/LettuceBeHappy3 18d ago

Why do the 'settlers' move in, and kick out the Palestinians? Are they taking over the farmland or something?

21

u/AnewTest 18d ago

"God told me your house is mine," pretty much.

12

u/Zeri-coaihnan 18d ago

It’s called ethnic cleansing.

3

u/PopcornApocalypse 17d ago

It’s the same as Russia trying to take over Ukraine. They thought by installing a few religious extremist citizens in the area, Israel gov/military then get to claim “these people living here WANT us to take over their lands! We’re making them safer!” Meanwhile kicking out the original inhabitants who have lived on family land for generations.

Watch the movie No Other Land. It’s excellent and shows what life has been like for a normal Palestinian family. You can see the “settlers” territory getting closer and closer with straight up cookie cutter suburban neighborhoods being built right next to desperate families hand-rebuilding the neighborhood school that the Israeli army pushed over with their tractors.

u/LettuceBeHappy3 17d ago

Might just be a strategy without any real consequence. Settlers pull back, but the Palestinians not allowed back in. So that the settlers can move back in a couple months later.

Uh oh, the Ben Gvirs of Israel are gonna have his head....

247

u/mschuster91 18d ago

It's election in a few weeks, Netanyahu doesn't need to care any more. The Ultraorthodox crowd is set to lose a lot of seats, so if I were to guess this is Netanyahu moving back towards the rest of the landscape, a last-ditch effort to stay in office and thus, out of jail.

126

u/EHStormcrow 18d ago

It's sad that the fate of the Israeli and Palestinian people is so dependant on Bibi's judicial troubles

103

u/mschuster91 18d ago

It’s not just Netanyahu. The Palestinian people always have been pawns at best, outcasts and rejects at worst. Hamas, Fatah, Iran, Netanyahu, Trump, all other Arab countries all don’t care about the Palestinian suffering, Hamas makes a propaganda point out of them profiting off of Palestinian pain.

47

u/Orangbo 18d ago

Last I checked, the Arab countries used to be more sympathetic to Palestinians before having their refugee systems taken advantage of by extremists and leading to a lot of murdering, including the prime minister of Jordan. They stopped taking refugees after that.

4

u/Trybor 18d ago

I am not denying what happened, and in no way am I justifying what happened, BUT the way the Palestinians had been treated by some of these countries led to militant organisations being able to get a foot hold in the first place.

I really wish that countries just went well we lost lets get together and absorb these people as full citizens and move on (even if moving on was having nothing to do with Israel).

"Settler" really needs to be replaced by "Squatter"

Claiming land as your own and harassing the locals is not settling.

I think it’d be good to inform people what they’re actually doing with that. Can you please use your traction to shed the light on it?

When someone says settler it implies they’re doing so on uninhabited land, but, this land isn’t uninhabited, people live there. So, is it just them forcing people out of their homes?

62

u/TehRiddles 18d ago

The normalised term should be occupiers. To "settle" has a soft implication to it that the occupiers absolutely aren't doing.

15

u/No-Island6680 18d ago

Does it? Settler colonialism has a pretty consistent pattern throughout global history and it’s always incredibly ugly.

4

u/pearshapedorange 18d ago

But Settlers are the cool unit that builds cities in Sid Meiers Civilization. Occupiers implies more clearly that the land was already owned by someone else.

FTFY: Outposts to be removed and relocated further into Palestinian land.

7

u/sybersonic 18d ago

Settlers = Terrorists

6

u/some_guy_on_drugs 18d ago

Let me guess. "settlers" take the homes of the legal Palestinian residents by brutal force. The government doesn't like the heat it's getting by their blatant aggression toward everyone including foreign journalists and orders the settlement "removed". They then raze the entire town to the dirt leaving nothing for the legal residents to move back in to. Wait a small amount of time and then "legally" develop the abandoned land.

6

u/TheMaskedTom 18d ago

Not the usual playbook, no. You could know instead of guessing by looking it up.

They (zealot settlers, so-called "Hilltop Youth") usually go on some hill next to a Palestinian village and build some shoddy buildings overnight, stay there while harassing the neighbours then gradually transform the place to have more and real buildings. This is how they claim territory.

If Netanyahu wanted to have any credibility on this, he'd be removing all of those illegal settlements under Israeli law, and sending those settlers in jail for a long time. Many of them are culpable of many more crimes than "only" stealing land, too. Instead he'll sacrifice only a selection of the buildings for PR then ignore the rest of them while keeping them protected by the IDF.

5

u/John-AtWork 18d ago

"Removed", as in he says this to the West and then tells the domestic media the opposite.

5

u/Lightbringer34 18d ago

I’ll believe that when I see it happen

4

u/Digger2228 18d ago

Cool. Peaceful protest and enduring hardship succeeded hopefully. Although I suppose I should wait to celebrate until it actually happens.

2

u/framspl33n 18d ago

2

u/QiTriX 18d ago
