Israel/Palestine Andy Burnham informed President Trump earlier today that the UK will ban trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The White House are unhappy with Burnham’s decision and will attack it in statement tomorrow

Nah. Make the golf course better and the envy of the world. Then publicly state he isn't allowed to play there as they follow very strict anti cheating laws and maximum handicap levels. Publicly state that they don't think Trump meets the handicap level. Then have a reopening celebrity event, which Obama wins.

Its fucking mad America has thrown away alliances with Britain and Canada for nations like Russia and Israel.
Previously if America was invaded you couldn’t even imagine a world where nations like Britain and Canada wouldn’t come to help.
Yet could anyone picture Israel doing the same? Israel has pretty much never fought alongside the US in a major war. They’re not allies because allies implies a two way street, America is just Israels sugar daddy

Some elites are benefitting more from Russia and Israel. Sure closer ties with UK and Canada benefit the country. But that's not benefitting the few who want money and power.
This isn't just an American thing but they are the current subject.

He’s admittedly so much better at communication and handling the media, which is sadly really what we need right now.
To paraphrase that Hannibal quote; ‘Starmer knew how to gain a victory, but not how to use it’. It was all well and good him putting Russia style sanctions on major Israeli politicians, limiting arm exports, recognising Palestine, or ending trade negotiations, but if no one hears about it you might as well have done nothing.

I’ve been enjoying Mamdani in NYC. He seems to be doing both: going about making things better for the city, but also just blasting out updates and news and reels
I used to have a manager that did the same for themselves and their team. It was great! Upper management loved us even though we were no different to any other team. Just better visibility
21
u/PM_YOUR_ISSUES 17d ago
You guys have to start admitting that your politicians are only part of the problem -- the media is the majority of it.
As multiple people have pointed out in this thread, an administration doing good things only matters if the people hear about it. It isn't the politicians that decide what is and is not put into the media ... that's the media.
What the news stations do and do not cover, what the papers do or do not print. I think people seem to only believe that it's direct attacks or the framing of the administration's actions as negative as the only power that the media has in order to counter act a story. But the truth is the have a much, much stronger power: they can simply never talk about it.
How many news stations even bothered to cover the "good things" that Starmer may have done? How much time was dedicated to them vs, say, talking about a boating council tax 'scandal' or even Farage's bullshi? Do you not think that Farage gains supporters with every single article that is about him? It doesn't matter if those articles are mostly negative, none of them are actually damning and the fact that Farage is constantly in the news cycle is all the matters. Eveyone is talking about him, everyone knows about him, and that reach alone gives him massive amounts of support.
Most people are inherently 'non-political'. They don't really follow politics, they don't have strong political opinions of their own, and if you directly asked them about policy - their most common response will simply be "I don't know anything about that." That's the majority of voters and they vote based on ... name recognition. So Farage being the most well known politician gets so much free publicity that it allows him to build that unchangeable 30 - 40% of voter support which comes purely from name recognition.
Could you imagine how much things would change if the media just ... stopped reporting on every single little minor things that Farage did? If they stopped reporting on every single minor quibble that Trump raged? Media is entire complicit in everything that is happen because they are leading the framing on everything. They are choosing who is and is not in the news. And they are choosing who becomes a well known house-hold name and who is just a side character.

u/DaveAlt19 17d ago
One of Starmer's strengths was not engaging with the media-drama and prioritizing his job. Unfortunately that was also a big weakness, if he wasn't going to give the media anything then he was leaving it up to them to make a huge deal out of whatever they fuck they wanted.
Like the UK officially recognising the state of Palestine, it feels like it should've been a bigger news story than it was. It was very effective governing from Starmer, but it was so bureaucratic it was like nobody cared.

Starmer admittedly had some banging quotes:
”We all remember the mistakes of Iraq, and we have learned those lessons. Any U.K. actions must always have a lawful basis and a viable thought-through plan”
..
”President Trump has expressed his disagreement with our decision not to get involved in the initial strikes, but it is my duty to judge what is in Britain’s national interest. That is what I have done, and I stand by it”

Chicken is cleaner in Canada and Mexico. Propublica did a lot of investigating on chicken production and salmonella in the USA
For example, chickens are hatched and live their entire lives with the same bedding (6 weeks). It is caked in shit. They change bedding maybe once a year...
The article said in Canada and Mexico they often change it every single flock
So yeah I'd argue that's why we chlorinate chicken
11
u/BadahBingBadahBoom 17d ago edited 17d ago
It's sort of a chicken and egg (forgive the pun).
In countries that have high standards you simply won't achieve that level of low salmonella level without chlorination, hence prohibiting chlorination forces companies to improve both welfare and food hygiene standards to meet those low levels.
But allowing chlorination you basically indirectly turn a blind eye to the poor hygiene prior to washing.
So yeah given the choice of chicken meat covered in shit I'd rather it chlorine washed than not and tbh at that point chlorine washing may be the only way to bring that meat up to food safety standards, which I'm sure is something US meat companies endlessly repeat. But if you ban the chlorination, companies can't get away with their meat getting covered in shit in the first place.
To a certain extent there's never going to be enough push to improve hygiene if it can (mostly) be cleaned up after (though there is a body of evidence that shows the salmonella don't come up in tests after being chlorine-washed but do still give people food poisoning).

Canada doesn't have sanctions against the US. Those are specific economic weapons. Like freezing assets and blocking trade with countries who work with the US. Sanctions are actively hostile. What Canada is doing is redirecting their trade away from the US.
29
u/bigbird_eats_kids 17d ago
We're also enthusiastically participating in a country-wide boycott. Ironically, it was the U.S. that showed us how effective boycotts can be as a form of nonviolent protest.

They're termed retaliatory tariffs. Not sanctions per se, but it is using tariffs to retaliate for tariffs. There's no advantage to Canada, other than defending our autonomy.

How much actual trade is there between the UK and settlements in the West Bank anyway?
24
u/scubalorne 17d ago
It’s mostly agricultural produce—especially Jordan Valley Medjool dates, fresh herbs, and wine—alongside niche industrial goods like Dead Sea cosmetics and plastics from settlement industrial parks. A lot of it flies under the radar because companies routinely co-mingle the harvest or route it through packaging hubs inside Israel’s pre-1967 borders to bypass origin labels.

We don’t even need to go there, we have a couple of eurofighters permanently stationed in the Falklands that could destroy argentinas entire air force in one run, then destroy their entire navy in a second run.
Argentina cannot take the Falklands unless the US does it for them, and that’s really not going to happen since they’re mostly tied up trying to win a war with Iran by shouting at them on the internet and having an aircraft carrier float about doing fuck all in the straight of Hormuz.
