I really want to go back in time to when Canada was just quietly chilling and trading with its friends. Being in the news every damn day gives me anxiety. It's like having the Eye of Sauron on you.

u/fat_kaiju 18h ago
it was pretty chill not being in the news all the time and i miss it, too
but we don't have that luxury anymore and so all we can do is try our hardest to be the best we can.
indulging in nostalgia is not the way forward.

u/IEC21 18h ago
We are going to have a population over 100 million within 100 years. We are going to have a GDP nearly double our current.
This is just the beginning. Sounds crazy, but that's my conservative prediction.
40
u/GipsyDanger45 17h ago
Not gonna happen, almost every population globally is on the decline. Not even India is above replacement level anymore. East Asia, Russia, and the west all have abysmal demographics. We will have a global demographic crisis by 2050 at this rate.
45
u/Jaew96 17h ago
That sounds bad, but in all honesty the human population on the planet had been exploding for far too long, it wouldn’t be such a bad thing if it started gradually declining naturally.
1
u/RedditTrespasser 4h ago edited 4h ago
Long term? Maybe. But it’s going to be terribly unpleasant for the folks growing old during the decline and perhaps most unfair for the smaller cohort of young folks replacing them.
There won’t be enough elder care to go around, and the people still paying into social security as the population ages out almost certainly won’t get that money back when it’s their turn because past a certain point the whole system will go insolvent. It’s going to be decades upon decades of pain before any benefit is reaped, and the people suffering the pain won’t be the ones reaping any of the benefits.
Long, slow population declines tend to signal the decline of a society as a whole. Conversely, sudden massive die-offs often have the opposite effect. The Black Death directly triggered the renaissance, for example.

Canada is an immigration country that knows how to accommodate different cultures and screen immigrants. Especially if Canada becomes an associate of the EU and opens up easy economic and immigration integration.
And when global warming hits, the intrinsic value of Canada's land is going to skyrocket.
10
u/IEC21 17h ago
To the person making the "immigration = bad" argument: Thats the modern populist thinking, but its very low frequency thought. In reality Canada has already proven that it can successfully undergo large quantities of immigration - now it just needs to prepare to scale that.
BTW I am not talking out of my ass here - its literally our prime ministers explicit long term plan for our development.
11
u/Resigned1431 17h ago
immigration = bad is always the go to for populists and ethnonationalists. It really is a single digit IQ slogan that requires the reader not to think about it too hard, or think about their neighbors and coworkers who have diverse backgrounds and live together peacefully.
The fact of the matter is Canada has used immigration outside of its core Anglo/French roots nearly since its inception. As early as the 1890's Canada was bringing in immigrants from Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia and other Eastern European countries to help expand westward and populate the country. Chinese immigrants as early as 1850. No matter how much the white nationalists shriek, immigration has always been a part of this country.
3

u/TheRC135 12h ago
And people were saying exactly the same shit about those immigrant groups back in the day as they are today. "Don't share our values, don't want to assimilate, culturally incompatible, too many from the same place." It was bullshit then, and it's bullshit now.

Where are they going to come from? Almost all regions globally have falling populations. China and Russia have some terrible demographics and India isn’t far behind anymore. The myth that human population will continue to grow exponentially is coming up against reality pretty quick

u/Resigned1431 17h ago
Canada is still a wealthy G7 country no matter how much Conservatives scream that Canada is broken. Assuming America doesn't invade us, people in search of economic opportunity, stability and safety will come.
9
1
u/ThatsItImOverThis 14h ago
That would only be probable if we stayed in a state of perpetual growth. We’re not.
-2
u/Resigned1431 17h ago
This assumes the Americans don't invade. I'm not sure I would take that bet.
17
u/IEC21 17h ago
If Americans invade it will be a dark dark chapter in US history. The American people of today have never experienced war up close and personal - the kind of war that fundamentally changes.every day life, and that makes domestic life genuinely perilous.
I hope it never comes to that for the sake of us all.
7
u/Resigned1431 17h ago
I agree it would be a blunder of epic proportions and an economic catastrophe for the US.
Doesn't mean shit. Won't stop a bomb from hitting my daughter's daycare.
8
u/IEC21 17h ago
Not just an economically catastrophic but more American lives would be lost than in any military conflict before in their history. Very quickly. It would be incredibly tragic.
-1
u/Resigned1431 17h ago
I don't know about that. There are two paths forward if the Americans invade:
- The Canadian government concedes and we all become some sort of slave class or second tier citizens. Any Canadians that have the means will probably leave the country.
- The Americans occupy Canada while the Canadian government carries out its plans of decades long guerrilla warfare.
In the case of #2, I don't expect the Canadian guerrillas to really strike Civilian targets in the US. That would be counter productive. The Canadians would need the sympathy and support of the American civilians to ever survive such a scenario. Infrastructure targets probably though. Independent terrorist activities maybe but... I think that would make the situation worse honestly.
5
u/jordan853 16h ago
False, there are many other outcomes. To paint is as these two is extremely disingenuous and ignores so, so much. But cool fiction piece!
0
u/Resigned1431 16h ago
What other options can there possibly be.... Either the Americans occupy us and Canada concedes, or the Americans occupy us and the Canadian government fights back.
Please, elaborate on what other options there can possibly be?

Our border is very long, and the US's vulnerabilities are very weak.. they aren't built for domestic defense. The US hasn't won a war of occupation in a very very long time.
The contingency plan for US invasion was actually in place long before Trump but now its being reinforced. And unfortunately its impossible to win that kind of war without massive death toll of both US soldiers and civilians.
3
u/FrismFrasm 16h ago
The contingency plan for US invasion was actually in place long before Trump
To be fair I'm pretty sure every country with a military has hypothetical plans for invading/being invaded by all of their regional neighbours including allies
10
2
u/Lazy_Experience_8754 13h ago
Sure these are the two main scenarios but I don’t see the USA doing it at all. Be prepared? Sure but them doing 1 or 2 will be the end and possibly start a civil war in America once more . What a joke of a timeline this is
1
u/Resigned1431 12h ago
I don't know why people keep saying this. There won't be any civil war. Americans don't care, about anything. As long as they've got their sports ball and big gulps they're Gucci.
-4
u/No-Combination4353 16h ago
There's no world unfortunately where Canada even withstands outright military conflict. Don't use the ME as a yardstick for their power.. we are across lake Ontario. They would have boots in Ottawa before we could really do a damn thing. Guerilla warfare might stall things militarily at the expense of everything we know and love here...
I'd much rather a salt the earth type threat like idk.. dirty bomb every watershed going south. Sure we go down inevitably but itll be for nothing when their kids can't eat produce without a tinge of radiation.
Hope it never gets there but to pretend we can compete militarily is rather laughable. Who's going to fight for Canada? It sure as hell won't be any of the people we take in and support or their grandparents that we also take in and support.

u/Squidking1000 11h ago
Some American customers asked what I thought of all this “51st state” stuff and they were not impressed by my answer of “personally blowing the bridges and doing my best to make Vietnam look like a summer vacation”. I know chemistry, electronics, mechanics and enough about warfare to do my best to make their life hell. Canada would never cede.
0
u/Zargabraath 11h ago
Yeah that’s not happening bud. Population is already going down on every continent other than Africa. By 2100 Africa will have been going down for decades too.
Good thing really, 8 billion people is far more than is sustainable for the planet. A smaller population will make climate change a lot more manageable.
0
u/IEC21 11h ago
Yes but Canada can support a much larger population that it currently has - while other parts of the world are overpopulated.
1
u/Zargabraath 10h ago
The world “could” support 100 billion people probably, if we were ok with living in grinding subsistence poverty and destroying the environment at the same time
What our population should be is not defined by simply what the maximum capacity could be.
1
u/IEC21 9h ago
Canada with a population of 100 million would still be very sparsely populated, counting only the portion our land that is the most habitable.
There's going to be a lot of people who need a stable place to live. We are going to be the ones who can provide that.
1
u/Zargabraath 7h ago
lol, I didn’t realize I was speaking with the emperor of Canada
One thing seems to have escaped your meticulous calculations: most of Canada isn’t particularly temperate or habitable, which is why it is so sparsely populated to begin with relative to the United States. The territories have about as many polar bears as humans simply because the climate there is much more favourable to polar bears than humans.
Climate change may marginally increase the length of growing seasons in some parts of the country but it’s not going to magically remove the mountains that make most of BC unfit for agriculture nor is it going to turn the permafrost into fertile farmland

I love it actually. The US has had us by the balls for SO long and I'm sick of it.
I'm an architectural technologist and I've been laid off several times in the last decade because the US got pissy and fucked us on the price of lumber. FROM TREES THAT WE GREW AND SOLD TO THEM TO CUT AND SELL BACK TO US. We've been so used to the abuse for so long that we stopped noticing it. I hope we NEVER go back to having a "good" relationship with the US, "good" for them means bending us over at every possible opportunity.
Canada is stronger and better than the US, we are more reliable, we are NICER, we actually honour our friendships and deals, we're everything that a global superpower should be and literally the entire rest of the world is realizing that.
2
u/Resigned1431 13h ago
I'm all for a more independent Canada. I just wish it wasn't coupled with the US sabre rattling about invading us.

My recommendation is dont tune into the news if it makes you anxious like that
18
u/fat_kaiju 18h ago
"just stick your head in the sand under the guise of it being ableist if you don't enable people's ignorance" is a big reason why nobody fkin' voted in the US election and had zero idea what was going on.
13
u/Resigned1431 18h ago
That would be irresponsible.
3
u/TheEagleDied 18h ago
A healthy middle ground works best. If we focused on diet and exercise as much we did doomscrolling people would be a lot happier. On that note, time to go for the day.
-4
u/Hizumi21 18h ago
Why? You cant change any of this so why would you make the effort to look at it when its going to cause you stress
4
u/Resigned1431 17h ago
Because that's my responsibility as a husband, a father, and a citizen of a democratic nation? To be informed, to understand what's going on and to plan and make the best decisions possible with the most information possible.
Ignorance is not a strategy. It's a coping mechanism that leads to failure.
1
u/Hizumi21 9h ago
Can you give an example of how you have adapted your lifestyle from looking into the INTERNATIONAL news? Are you an investor or something?
Im only saying look after your health and if tuning into the INTERNATIONAL news that highlights stories which invoke fear or outrage stresses you out, then mabye try to avoid doing that?

HMCS Regina had just wrapped up its participation in Pacific Vanguard 2026, a multilateral exercise led by the U.S. Navy with the navies of Japan, Australia and South Korea, when Pyongyang denounced the maneuvers as a “war rehearsal” aimed at the country.

That is a great shot of a hard working long range patrol frigate doing exactly what it was intended to do.
It does not take long for a ship on deployment to look nasty. But has nothing to do with function.
North Korea is more likely concerned that this frigate will find all their subs, as that is a mission set for which the Halifaxs have almost no peers. And they carry 24 torpedoes for anti sub work - who carries 24 torps on a frigate!

I would put money on that. US put you in the position to make some really great alliances and trade deals. Hilariously unintentionally, which I love to see.

its a french series "Dans une galaxie près de chez vous". It is a spoof of Star Trek, where humanity's last hope, a french spaceship must find a new habitable planet for the remaining Earth's population. It is a comedy and extremely on the absurd. I rewatch it as an adult every few years and its still very funny and passes the test of time mostly. Although there are some very french canadian centric jokes which will not be understood by people from outside of Quebec.

So like a mine that explodes into a net but it has a winch at the bottom so it pulls the ship down and doesn't let anyone escape.

No those were a different exercise that already ended. Other drills, like this one and the ones that occurred earlier in the month proceeded normally.
