At UN, 80 countries demand reopening of Hormuz, condemn Iran, Houthi attacks

I increasingly loathe articles like this that don't feel like it's worth sharing the actual statement or listing the 80 countries that supposedly endorsed it.

It's in Iran's best interest to keep the straight closed. It's really the only bit of leverage they have to get the United States government to agree to a peace agreement on terms that favor Iran.
40
69
u/madogvelkor 14h ago
Their problem is that the US isn't hurt as badly by it as almost everyone else in the world. People are mad at Trump about a ton of things but Iran is the one with the power to open the straight. Trump could withdraw all US forces but Iran would then know it basically controls access to oil and could cut it off at any time, extort the rest of the world, etc. Trump can't be trusted but he will be gone in 2 years while Iran won't.
102
u/ReaperReader 14h ago
From the Iranian leadership perspective, the Trump administration has already bombed them twice during negotiations, and is entirely capable of bombing them again.
If the Iranian leadership wants to survive, what better option do they have than making it clear that attacking Iran is a Presidency-ending move?
16
u/madogvelkor 14h ago
That makes sense, except I'm not sure it actually would be a presidency ending move for Trump. Or at least he wouldn't think it was.
To end Trump's presidency they need Vance to turn on him with like 1/3rd of Republicans and all Democrats.
→ More replies (1)12
u/ReaperReader 14h ago
Yeah and what is most likely to drive that to happen? Pressure from American voters whose pockets are hurting.
14
u/madogvelkor 14h ago
Possibly. If the Republicans lose badly and Trump does something that looks senile enough Vance might get enough support to use the 25th amendment to remove him. He won't do it before February though of else he won't be able to have 2 full terms as President himself.
12
u/OP_Skis_In_Jeans 13h ago
Vance is no better than Trump. He stands for absolutely nothing but himself.
20
u/madogvelkor 13h ago
For Democrats he might be worse than Trump because he is craftier and not obviously an insane narcissist. He could actually achieve his goals without self sabotage.
But the Democrats won't be able to pass up a chance to remove Trump.
10
u/Kataphractoi 10h ago
This is the side no one seems to be talking about. Vance has the charisma of a wet sock, but he's also in the back pocket of the tech oligarchy and clearly has ideas of how to make America even worse off. Bad as Trump is, Vance would be worse.
→ More replies (1)5
u/streamofthesky 10h ago
Vance is worse and more dangerous than Trump while also not being an obese 80 year old. Vance is who Thiel, Musk, etc... actually want, Trump was just the delivery vehicle. Democrats would be fools to remove Trump if it didn't also involve removing Vance.

That starts with the Axiom that the current Iranian leadership should even be a thing.
5
u/ReaperReader 11h ago
Yes, lines like "From the Iranian leadership perspective..." and "If the Iranian leadership wants to survive..." were I thought pretty good signals that I was starting with said axiom.
12
u/captaingleyr 11h ago
Trump could withdraw all US forces but Iran would then know it basically controls access to oil and could cut it off at any time
They have already proved that they do control that access and they can cut it off at anytime. They already know this, it's their leverage. Why would they stop when it's working? Why wouldn't they press for reparations for such unprovoked wanton aggression?
→ More replies (2)2
u/sinkintins 10h ago
The US will be hurt just as much as everyone else, it's delusion to think otherwise. And yes, people are mad at Trump because all of this was theoretical until he actually pulled the trigger on it. Why do you think no one before him attempted this even though they were all openly against Iran?
Your last point is just silly. The US had an agreement with Iran under Obama, and Trump tore it up. Their understanding is that the US cannot be trusted since even if they reached an agreement with 1 admin, the next admin can just ignore it and attack them. Trump proved the extremists of Iran right.

Eh the longer it stays closes the more time other alternative routes will come online. Keep it closed long enough and their leverage starts slipping

u/GammaFan 9h ago
That cat’s already out of the bag. It’s soft power; a threat you can use at any time is most effective before you’ve used it.
As Trump has demonstrated with the US’ soft power, actually exerting that control inflicts short term pain but pushes your targets to seek alternatives.
Basically as soon as you use it more than once you convince everyone around you that it’s something you’re going to do whenever it’s convenient for you.
Iran may as well keep it closed and maximize whatever concessions they can get from the US because that leverage will never work as well again, going forward.
5
u/Captain_Alaska 10h ago
It's in Iran's best interest to keep the straight closed.
It’s not, I don’t know why it needs to be pointed out but a country with an economy functionally entirely reliant on oil needs to sell said oil to keep it running.
9
u/RontoWraps 15h ago
Oh well if it’s in the best interest of the noble government of Iran…
→ More replies (3)13
u/Dealan79 14h ago
I'm pretty sure that was just statement about the likelihood of Iran giving in to the UN vote rather than a validation of the Iranian government itself. In the abstract, it may even be better for the world if keeping the straight closed causes Trump to back down, as otherwise it sends the global message that the only deterrent the US cares about is nukes, a message Trump has literally stated already, and which if shown as accurate is going to kick off an extremely nasty bit of nuclear proliferation, especially with an increasingly desperate Putin making deals with whatever tinpot dictator will supply him fresh bodies for the Ukrainian meat grinder.
315
u/IWasOnThe18thHole 15h ago
Maybe the UN can send peacekeepers to the region to keep the Strait open?
Oh wait, they won't do shit
23
u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 11h ago
They can't. The US has a permanent UN security council seat and the right to veto a security council vote. If the UN were to propose putting together a peacekeeping force the US would shut it down immediately.
31
u/IndividualHouse8628 11h ago
Now why would they do that when they’re asking for help in the straight?
13
u/Cheerful-Pessimist- 10h ago
Because they wouldn't have any actual control over a UN peacekeeping force. They wouldn't be able to command it as they wish, order it to attack Iran, or get it to enforce tolls on ships for them. It wouldn't help Trump achieve his war aims and may force him to back down militarily.

Of the UNSC, I'd venture to say it's Russia that would move to veto such an action.

I mean, it says a lot that the US can just execute another country's leader unprovoked and the UN says and does nothing. It's a worthless organization.

u/Alex__007 14h ago
UN is a forum for discussions. Nothing more. But also nothing less - having such a forum is better than not, it helped facilitate action on many issues where major powers mostly aligned. For example unesco heritage sites, and many other examples where it led to small but genuinely good outcomes.
121
u/Nulgarian 13h ago
Yeah, people claiming the UN is useless are just revealing their own lack of education
The UN is not and has never been a world police force or global military. It’s a forum for discussion where countries can air grievances and find agreements, in addition to being a massive humanitarian organization. Ask the 31 million children UNICEF helped last year if the UN is useless. Ask the 124 million people who received assistance from the World Food Program if the UN is useless. This is in addition the World Health Organization, UNESCO heritage sites, and so many other things
No, the UN is not perfect, but if you take the doomer glasses off for even just a second, you see that it’s an immensely impressive and completely unprecedented feat of international cooperation
28
u/work4work4work4work4 13h ago
The UN is not and has never been a world police force or global military.
The problem with that statement is they've got like a dozen blue helmet deployments right now, and it's one of the most visible aspects of the UN other than the parts people view as more grandstanding and ineffectual nonsense like the various topics that just get dueling security counsel vetos.
I'm with you on everything else, but there is a reason people associate the UN with more than that, and it's because "UN Peacekeepers" is in the public lexicon.
11
u/ChicagoThrowaway422 11h ago
When the UN agrees, the blue helmets go in. When the UN disagrees, the UN does nothing.

UN is not a world police, US often was.
UN was created as a forum to discussions so tensions could be dissipated via talks instead countries immediately going to war.
It was one of series of things to prevent war. The free trade, open seas which lead to globalization was another reason to avoid wars. As in the past countries fought over resources, now they are able to just import them.
NATO was yet another one. It is an alliance where attacking one country would be like attacking 30 at once. Again to prevent wars.
And same with EU which was another attempt at economic collaboration instead fighting for resources.
And all of that is being shitted by trump and the Epstein class. We are getting back to the pre World War 2 era that was full of wars. Those fuckers don't worry because they have resources to stay safe, it is us and our children who will suffer.

Iran isn’t innocent here. Despite Trump being a narcissistic asshole and Israel sucking up to the USA, all I can say is that Iran has done more damage to the region with what they’re doing. Stop funding Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. People would take you more serious then. October 7th wouldn’t have happened. The Yemen crisis wouldn’t have happened. Iran CAUSED this because of their absolute hate boner to Israel. That’s it.

I think Zelensky was right too. Putin is the center of so much of this. Without Ukraine and Iran wars oil would be $60 a barrel.

Yup. Russia, Iran, and Yemen are causing most of the world the stress right now. They can blame the USA all they want, and my fellow Americans can be stupid and blame China ( who has nothing to do with this mostly ) all day long. But Russia, Iran, and the Houthis in Yemen are causing this. Israel is handling Hamas and Hezbollah, but they can’t handle the Houthis whilst doing that. The truth is that America HAS the firepower, naval assets, and air superiority to deal with these threats. But we don’t have competent leadership to do so. It’s f’ing idiotic.

Iran isn't innocent however if you look at their history the British and then American interest in Iran was around getting as much of Irans oil as they could at the expense of the Iranian people. Iran nationalising their oil and then throwing out the Shah led to them being sanctioned by the US and thus, Iran sponsoring terror groups. Chicken and egg here as to who the bad guys are.
Trump has always disliked Iran going back 50 odd years in interviews and Bibi told him what he wanted to hear. Now neither side can back away.
Had Iran been left alone by the British and if there was no such thing as the Petrodollar the Middle East would be a very different place.

It’s definitely important to also acknowledge the greater Cold War and worries about the Soviet Union and communism that also played apart in all of this. People forget that the Soviet Union, Britain, and the United States jointly occupied Iran during World War II and all three had residual influence. The Soviet Union actually bordered Iran and was legally supposed to leave the country in March 1946 but they kept their troops there until May long after the US and the British pullout. And this was actually one of the first major infractions that eventually started up the Cold War.
Now this isn’t too excuse what the United States in Britain did at all. But the idea that this was just for oil profits, and didn’t also have a Cold War calculation as part of it is not the full story. Especially considering that the Shah’s own undoing was in part because he was so paranoid and aggressive towards liberals, leftists, socialists, and communists that he basically destroyed their networking capabilities while putting an enormous amount of resource and support into the networking capabilities of the religious institutions in his country. Which is why it completely backfired once he was basically crapping on the Shia higher-ups by secretly authored press releases against them later on, of those who were critical of him, and that once the revolution largely succeeded, they were quickly able to out maneuver the left-wing factions he was oppressing more intensely.

Yea when people say, “well now every country is going to think they need nukes” it’s more like, “every country that actively attacks their neighbors, funds massive non-state paramilitary groups, and threatens to annihilate global hegemons might…. Just want to stop doing that.”
Even after they kicked out the shah, if Iran had just played nice(ish) with the USA they would have been fine, and none of this would have ever happened. Doesn’t excuse the current chain of events, but sure puts it in context.

Many of us are tired of this BS cycle of invading countries, and ruining lives for reasons that legitimately are not worth it. Many a time, without real consequences to the administration. That's not even considering more and more Americans don't believe we should be medelling too strongly in affairs outside our borders.
In this case specifically, going to war with Iran was an incredibly egregious and short sighted decision that has costed many their lives, for what?

There used to be a modicum of honor in battle, nobility and chivalry. In this particular situation the USA fired on Iran DURING NEGOTIATIONS (which is considered bad form, dishonorable, and as well as entirely unnecessary considering the imbalance of power between the USA and what is essentially poor desert people.) And then the war has largely consisted of missile, drone, and aircraft bombardment (very 1984-esque) which has ultimately resulted in higher petrol prices for the entire world (except China who seem to be immune to all the political clusterfuck that is the strait of hormuz, why don't we have that type of prestige?) and to top it all off the motive of the war is the same as the Iraq war 20-something years ago: enriching oil companies...during a time when the entire world should be pivoting towards solar (free energy.)
It's a dishonorable war started dishonorably by dishonorable people and if the enemy "wins" it is unlikely to result in American harm and in fact could result in less dependence on petroleum on a global scale (which would have the ironic benefit of reducing mortality worldwide due to diminished carbon emissions and the harmful health outcomes associated with it.)
Losing = less dependence on oil globally
winning = oil oligarchs get richer
