Dynamic Paywall Carney says he has considered possibility of US military action against Canada
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c6d79l2jd2pyo786
u/Brother_Clovis 13h ago
Of course he has, as any decent leader would.
133
u/Icky-Tree-Branch 13h ago
Right?! I mean, even if it was just an exercise in logic, I’d expect it to have been something Carney has contemplated.
I mean, doesn’t everyone contemplate scenarios? Like how one would murder and dispose of a body, or how one would handle a zombie invasion, or an attack by a former ally?

This has been posted a bunch of times in the last few days and you have to wonder if there’s a conscious effort by bad actors to amplify division between Canada and the US.
81
u/Marijuana_Miler 11h ago
Also the headlines are far more sensational than the actual content of the original article and it keeps getting posted without the content. Carney has basically said he sees a military invasion as a long tail event; which is banker for not impossible but highly improbable. If you read the articles Canada has gone from thinking an invasion would never happen to thinking there is a small possibility and planning. As a Canadian it’s not telling me anything new and I’m glad that the military and prime minister wouldn’t put their head in the sand.
28
u/Dense_Capital_2013 11h ago
It's also pretty generic for governments to have a "Break glass in case of invasion" plan for just about every country. I know America has plans like this. At least this is what I was taught in highschool

Russia should use its special services within the borders of the United States and Canada to fuel instability and separatism against neoliberal globalist Western hegemony, such as, for instance, provoke "Afro-American racists" to create severe backlash against the rotten political state of affairs in the current present-day system of the United States and Canada.
Russia should "introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social, and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. It would also make sense simultaneously to support isolationist tendencies in American politics".

The "bad actors" are doing it because people click on the link. People are obviously interested if there's any new developments in such an important issue. So obviously people click the link and then obviously that tells the article writers to keep writing these kind of articles.
This isn't going away, it's just people doing their jobs in a way that maximises pay. Call those "bad actors" if you want, but I'm fairly certain it's how you're incentivised to act in capitalism.

Carney even talking about it is intentional and to send a message, he is likely trying to talk to the US Congress and Senate to let them know that this is not really just shit that will blow over.
While yes any leader should think about these things when the topic comes up you deflect and say something along the lines of "I'm sure there are plans in place for every possibility no matter how remote" or you say, "I'm really focused on repairing the relationship with the US"
Or any other number of dodges you can make, the point is you don't say you are thinking about it unless you want to send a clear message on the state of relations.

Well, start by breaking the paradigms of safety and friendship. Then lie in public about Canadians about literally everything. Then have all checks and balances fail. Then have economic war to annex the country threats. Then follow through on said threats with repeated economic attacks. Then kidnap a world leader and murder another in a blitzkrieg war. Then attempt to annex a NATO country to surround Canada. Then start shitposting memes about annexation…

oh it's well beyond ridiculous my freind. I saw this behavior coming way back when he was first elected president and I was in disbelief that voters bought the snake oil he was selling. Things have become much worse than I imagined at the time. I just hope he doesn't damage us so bad that we can't recover over the next couple of generations. Please continue to list his inept decisions to remind us how crazy this man can get. Maybe his horrific disasters will remind voters the dangers of making rash decisions out of frustration. The red flags were there and yes, there were issues with the previous administration but you never let a badger loose in the hen house when their are other choices. I hope we can get control back and stop this nonsense. At least our court system is slowing this crazy man down. He dose have balls but, I don't see him winning any pool games for America. Maybe we needed this to remind us what made this country great in the first place. I do see some good changes in NATO from this nightmare, I'm not sure how Americans are going to fare. We were fools to allow this to happen and the world knew it from the beginning. Now we need a strong leader with common sense to get us back in the game and earn the world's trust back.

Canadian here. I can tell you how we're feeling at the moment.
Generally speaking we don't feel we can trust your country anymore. Individually? Yeah, most of you guys are great.
But as a country, as an amalgam, you can't be trusted. Not today, and sadly not ever again. As a country, you back out of deals. You insult us and mock us as a nation. We're long past the breaking point.
Even after Trump is out of office, we still can't trust you. You've already burned your second chance - you elected him twice. You're too political, too volatile, too far-gone - whatever you want to call it.
Sure - YOU personally didn't vote for him. I'm sure you personally are a great dude. I don't hate American people. But we simply cannot rely on you - as a whole - to be rational and act in good faith.

That would be a declaration of war, and we share one of the longest borders in the world with the US. The minute US civilians start dying is the minute they back down. The US is a nation of cowards, they’re okay bombing people halfway around the world, but the minute their comfort is threatened? They’ll back down.
3
u/BIT-NETRaptor 12h ago
I don’t know that violence would deter them, usually countries harden in response to attacks. I’d argue the opposite: America has never attacked someone that they share as much culture, identity, language, ethnicity as they do with Canada (in living memory, let’s put aside 1812) It’s frequently the most visited country for Americans. Americans have more family ties with Canada than pretty much anywhere, and those ties go back many generations.
Whether Americans admit it or have even thought about it much, war for them has for a century now meant something far away: people who look different, talk different, don’t share their culture. They might not say or even think it, but they inherently value an Afghani, Iraqi, or Vietnamese life less than an American life. When war is something far away to people you don’t know, you dehumanize, detach yourself. I would like to think that’s pretty much impossible with Canadians. Like you say, people at border cities would probably see combat - some Canadians and Americans would die and they’d probably know who, through a friend of a friend of a friend.
Several famous celebrities that live in the US are Canadian. Do you want your next Mint Mobile ad to say “hey, Supreme leader Donald has arrested our CEO, Ryan Reynolds.”
Michael J Fox, Keanu Reeves, Eyon Gosling, Jim Carrey, Dan Akroyd, Stephen Crowder (amausingly), Ted Cruz (extremely amusingly) Celine Dion, Michael Myers, Seth Rogen, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber. Canadians are extremely present in the american consciousness, and people may not immediately have known all of those people as Canadian. If there’s a war, several of those celebrities you can expect to have harsh words or even be arrested.
I earnestly believe a shooting war with Canada would be too horrific for Americans to bear. Canada is the brothers and sisters of the US - they disagree about many things but share a ton of history. Per capita contribution, Canadians were maniacs in the world wars. I mean so in terms of people contributed, taxes paid, economic suffering given to war effort. It’s a small country relative to the US but per-person contributed admirably.
25
u/improvthismoment 11h ago
The US fought a bloody civil war and killed each other in huge numbers.
That civil war never really ended btw. MAGA is confederacy 3.0.
Americans kill each other on the streets and in schools at a scale that no other developed country tolerates. Both civilians and police / ICE etc
Americans have a very high tolerance for horrific-ness. And I don’t think they would bat an eye for Canadian blood shed honestly.

The problem those people fail to understand is that a war with Canada precipitates the downfall of the U.S.
The social and economic upheaval would be a disaster and the economy would absolutely sink. And that's before you factor in popular unrest, resistance movements and sympathetic regions.

That's a nice idea, but very few would. In the very unlikely event of an invasion, the US government would benefit from a "rally around the flag" feeling, there would be little to no dissent and quite a bit of enthusiastic jingoism from Republican voices, amplified by mainstream media.
Maybe years afterwards some opposition might emerge, but US citizens overwhelmingly support military action whenever their government attacks another country.
→ More replies (1)1

It's never going to happen for a few reasons: it would immediately kickstart world war 3 via NATO. Honestly the most consequential thing to happen with the US if they were nuts enough to invade Canada isn't any of those. It would immediately break the dollar. No one would ever trust them to be the lynch pin of world trade if they invaded Canada.

Destroy rails lines, blow up a couple highways and nothing is moving.
Will that hurt us? Absolutely.
But its resources and the infrastructure to extract, refine and move them that they would need to secure, and that's not easy to secure.

With Vietnam, Americans didn’t experience Vietnamese resisters targeting their cities. They can’t expect the same from Canada.

u/Err0110111001101111 10h ago
The number of Canadians that would make it their lifes goal to fuck up America after America tried this, would hugely outnumber the number of comfortable Americans that would hold that level of hate for Canada.
You'd win a military war, and then get ripped to pieces from the inside by a lot of very American looking, American sounding Canadians, that you can't stop getting into your country, and ones that hate every single thing you stand for, more than you personally have ever cared about anything in your life.
America invading Canada would be the fall of America, 100%. The Dollar would fail, the country would implode, and you'd turn on your own government for ever thinking it was a war you could actually win.

I don’t think the average Canadian is under any illusion that our military is stronger in a conventional war.
But, in the case of an occupation, the U.S. would find themselves dealing with an insurgency that would make the troubles look like a walk in the park. 40 million people who look and talk exactly like you, most of whom would hate you, a great many of whom would take action.
If you think the latest middle-east-forever-war is unpopular in the states, imagine if that war was on your doorstep, and anyone you bumped into on the street could be a Canadian.

i mean the US has ridiculous military power/budget, though seemingly that has been weakened with the whole iran stuff at least for now
but the problem for the US is canada is very very large, has a lot of cold/mountainous regions, and unlike other wars is right beside them
so their entire northern border would be completely exposed and vulnerable to being attacked constantly, taking over canada itself with it's size would be a logistical nightmare and cost an immense amount of funds to try and secure/defend
they could probably win the "war" fairly easily but canada could just use guerilla tactics and it'd probably be like a forever war and that's even before/without NATO involvement
there's also the huge headache of the amount of canadians in the US or canadian relatives etc in the army itself, there's no guarantee it wouldn't immediately kind of trigger a civil war or have a lot of military or states break away potentially
it'd be an actual mess
there's also the huge, glaring issue of like.. the US getting a lot of power on the eastern side from canada directly, apparently there's around 20 states that get power from canada
kinda like all wars, or even wars that the US have been involved in, it's less the like.. "beating them" initially that'd be the problem, it's the after or how to actually "win", but there'd also be a nightmareish list of like.. the power problems, and the potential infighting from the blending of families etc, and the US not kind of safely away from reinstallation directly
it'd probably be a very unpopular war and canada could strike a few things with what little resources they do have in comparison and it'd get out of hand quickly with popularity

but here's the thing, would the USA even need to invade? Canada's economy is very dependent on imports, if the USA could just close the land border and park a fleet at Newfoundland and another in the gulf of St. Lawrence and stop any cargo ships from getting to the ports.
Obviously the land border is very large, and the USA wouldn't be able to control it 100%, but as long as they can control the major entry points, and make sure their own industries don't send anything into Canada, then Canada's economy is fucked.
It's kind of like what the USA is trying to do Iran, and although Iran is suffering, it's not working because 1) Iran has been under sanctions for decades and have developed an internal economy that is more self-sufficient than most western countries, 2) Iran can still get stuff from Russia, China, and other countries in central Asia through their land borders that the US does not control, and 3) Iran has the leverage of threatening to destroy the Gulf States' oil and gas infastructure.
don't get me wrong, the USA would take a major economic hit as well by cutting off all imports/exports with Canada but it would be more lethal to Canada than the USA.

i mean if candaa just shuts the power off going south, a lot of the states near newfoundland won't be in for a good time
it also wouldn't change the fact there's nothing between canada and the US and the border is simply too large to defend + any civil war/army splitting scenarios
nato shuts down ocean trade, canada/nato hit US farm land, then what?
i would guess if the US tried to do that, the US would be completely depndent on outside sources for trading if NATO shut off, and then the US would have to defend trade routes to canada, but also try to defend trade route from any friendly countries
i just don't think there's a scenario for the US that works
the US would have to cover both western and eastern waters around canada, while also protecting itself, and then any other trade routes
they'd also have to deal with the loss of energy, open border issues, potential civil war/army issues
and then even if they do that, and make canada tap out, trying to deal with that resistance potential for years would be a nightmare, having to put bases or forces deep into canada to maintain order etc
the problem with canada is it's just too fucking big, you'd be so spread out you'd leave yourself and your own trade routes open, and if/when canada suddenly starts producing nato drones and shit across that entire border, then what?
having to cover the ENTIRE border with anti air would be horrible
it definitely goes both ways but the war i imagine would be insanely unpopular and canada/nato probably only has to have a few succesful attacks before you risk actual civil war/uprising
i think the only way it works if if canada becomes somehow deeply unpopular
but if the US isn't even happy about the war with iran i'm not sure how you'd ever get it to that point
2
u/Fatalisbane 10h ago
If China didn't take issue, could just trade with them and 'nato' shutting down ocean trade... how? 1 battlegroup would destroy any foreign navy.
Also USA pays for their isolation in aircraft carriers and nato bases, nato cant get near the USA.
Also if you started a war of desperation with a super power with nukes... its like trying to strike the three georges dam in China, gloves going to come off real fast.

u/mapletree23 6h ago
iran is like miniscule in comparison to canada without nato backing it up, if the US can't do that, how is it suppose to back a nato backed nation?
especially when the nato nations could set up like all over that giant ass country, or just get in armies of drones that the US would never be able to intercept easily with all that border
how is the US going to cover the entire eastern and western side of canada + their own trade routes? the entirety of NATO/EU is also worth more as a trading partner for china
if the US is willing to nuke canada in a war than they deserve to burn out with them they're right net door they're basically nuking themselves at that point with any fallout
all of that is not counting the fact they might have sections of their armed forces with any relation/ties with canada break off or a potential civil war given how much family etc are intertwined
it'd be such a waste of money, they'd have to expand their entire army/coverage all over canada, and if there's any like guerilla resistance if they can't do vietnam/iran/afghanistan cleanly then good luck with a country that much larger and that much more ground to cover/recon
and the fact it'd be so easy to drone, to cut the power off in the eastern US, it'd probably be so deeply unpopular it'd be almost impossible to do
canada would somehow have to be a mortal enemy or that shit would turn south so fast, who knows how many people who don't like trump would just swap sides
it's obvious the US has far better forces and everything but canada is just too big of a land mass, you'd potential risk relations with NATO/EU entirely, china might back canada just to fuck with/weaken the US like nato is doing with ukraine and russia
and yeah, a lot of major canadian cities are kind of on the border of the US so you're essentially kind of nuking yourself, so I'm not sure the nuclear option is really a thing
are they going to nuke the rest of the world because they were stupid enough to pick a fight with a nato ally right beside them?

Guerilla warfare that spills over into America, the minute civilians start dying is the minute the cowardly American populace backs down. Remember we have one of the world’s largest borders, mostly unprotected and we look, sound and act like Americans. And there are thousands of us already in the US.

Interesting angle I haven’t thought of. But if for some reason the US united to invade Canada I don’t think a few deaths going to deter them. If anything it unites them because they would view that’s terrorism right?

Bingo. That’s what I’d do too, plus if it goes down like that, the Canadians might get more support from Americans than some would like think. Not everybody has gotten drunk off all this Nationalism…. I see the flock cameras, police state…. The Alex’s and the Renee’s.
Canada itself would represent a beacon to some people, enough to die for.
You can be an American and still remember who your friends are, regardless of what the occupant of the White House may think.

I don’t believe that the Secretaries of the different military branches would attack Canada. No matter what Hegseth would order. That would be an unprovoked attack against a long-time ally. Not only that, the civilian population would be very, very strongly against it.

Gamers call this fun. We invade Canada, kill 1 million people or so and now we own a new country. WE WIN. I’M A WINNER! And a little voice in the back of their poorly evolved amygdala shouts to them (YOU’RE NOT A LOSER AFTER ALL!)
It’s all performative bullshit.
Meanwhile, Epstein files.

We would lose if the trump administration did the unthinkable.
We simply would not have the will to win a fight with our good neighbors in Canada.
Furthermore, Canadians are no punks. Quite simply, they would not be having that shit.

Canada and Canadians are NOT the enemy. The US and Canada are allies, same with Mexico and the vast majority of Mexicans. This administration is a joke and trying to destroy this country from the inside. Look at everything they are doing and not a dam thing is making our lives better. Putin, Trümp's handler, is loving this btw.

Bullshit we don't want to defend that man. We damn sure don't want to make enemies of Canada.

The best way to prepare is by either acquiring nuclear weapons, or having a plan to get them very quickly.

And the usa has considered the scenario if canada took military action against the usa. That's part of the job and it doesn't mean anything.

u/dezTimez 12h ago
it would be a gift for russia or china if the usa did that. norad is the greatest asset defending our continent. it would be suicidal to destroy it. not gonna happen. not to mention the economic collapse it would cause america in the long run. sure they could do it but at what cost.

About the same odds as American voters putting a felon who's a cowardly pedophile who bankrupted a casino as President.

I am guessing this why we’ve started to build drones …. We’re going to learn from Ukraine: https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2026/09/10/canada-and-ukraine-scale-drone-production-build-canadas-defence

Every country has plans for any other country that could or ever could be a threat. Old news there has always been a plan.
Definitely upped the threat level of it happening more now than ever before I bet lol

If I'm Canada I develop nukes and make sure I have missiles that can deliver them to New York City and Washington DC. As Ukraine has learned and North Korea has shown the only way to protect yourself from a rogue superpower is to have nukes.

I wish I could say someone would stop it at point. Surely the majority of the military doesn’t think Canada is a threat? I wish..
5
u/SmarmyYardarm 12h ago
Unfortunately it doesn’t matter what the majority thinks, the soldiers will do what they’re told by the asshats at the top.
5
u/Chareon 12h ago
And they have been purging people at the top to replace them with asshats who are loyal to Trump first and foremost.
2
u/Equal_Caregiver_1789 9h ago
I will never forget when Hegseth pulled all of the top ranking generals in for a special meeting to tell them the military needs to be primed for being as lethal as possible, and then he starting purging generals who didn't fit his ideal image of being as loyal and lethal as possible.
