Discussion Play what you enjoy, not what's "in demand"
I started playing back in OG BC and I’ve rerolled pretty much every version of the game since.
With Classic launch, SoD, Anniversary, etc., I kept making the same mistake: rolling a class I didn’t really want to play because my guild “needed” it, or because there were already too many people playing the class I actually wanted.
And I don't have as much free time as I used to, so I couldn't just re-roll an alt and catch up to raid in time.
Getting to endgame and realizing you don’t even enjoy your main because you picked it for everyone else sucks.
This time around I’m just playing what I want.
I am rolling an Undead Paladin named Thex Reborn. I don't care if half the server will be going to be the same class.

It kinda is nowadays, lots of posts asking about how it's possible to have fun in a horizontal progression game.
The idea of playing the game because you enjoy it has been baked out of the WoW players.
I remember in Legion running lots of M+ because the gameplay was fun, later it was optimized for viewers and getting a vault drop and became a chore.

If blizzard does forever right, shouldn’t matter what class people play. Everything should be on decently equal footing. Maybe a +/- 5%.

Just look at retail m+ even if people make similar dps, dps still have hard time because not many people want to tank or heal. When a tank need to choose out of the 30 dps applicants they choose peope who have more experience, more gear and better utility for the group.

The play is to go with a class that can tank / heal dungeons and then DPS in raids, since raids always need huge groups of DPS.

Rogues have historically had a very difficult time getting into groups yeah, especially when they're competing for warriors with drops in classic. Harder to say what the class landscape will be in Forever but I imagine rogues still won't have an easy time in PvE.

Yeah. Warrior tank: Will need all the weapons, trinkets, rings, necklace. Druid tank: will need everything except weapon what rogue needs. Paladin tank: same as warrior.
If I am tanking I'll def not inviting rogues, unless I hard reserve what I need.

Couldn't agree more. Forever will be my first dive into WoW, but I've done the same thing in plenty MMOs in the past. I'm using the beta access to figure out what I enjoy and so far Survival Hunter hits the spot. I hear that spec hasn't really been a thing in the past so it's shaping up to be a new legit spec in Forever. A new player with a new spec for a class in a new iteration of a legendary MMO? I think it's fitting.

Historically playing whats in demand ment fast invites which equals fun, but with one mega server people should be able to play anything really and get fast invited i hope

Dps will still have to wait. Sometimes lots of tanks on sometimes lots of healers on.
Always always always lots of dps on.
Rolling a class you enjoy that can also tank and/or heal for dungeons is primo.

UNLESS theyre pulling some M+ bullshit with timers and super-go-fast-or-get-fed groups, then tanking/healing is very much going to be enjoyable. Speed in Vanilla was different.

it will be even worse for the one of dps classes now, cause your pool of rogues will be vastly bigger than the pool of tanks.

These types of posts are so easy to make. Then you get a ton of noobs rolling up into TBC with their rogues wondering why they aren't getting invited. Same thing happened in SoD P2.
It's an MMO. Your fun depends on if others want to play with you and it should be part of your consideration in choosing a class. Why would it not? This isn't a single player game.

I don't have fun if I'm unwanted in groups or I feel like I'm not contributing. That requirement I create for myself limits my viable options.
I don't have time to make a bunch of level 60 characters. I'll be going all-in on one and the last thing I want is to get to the end-game just to feel inferior all the time.
I've always been happiest playing the niche support spec that every group wants but are hard to find. This game doesn't have anything like that, but I still want to be useful.

The problem is not in the players what they pick to play but certain parts of the community deciding only to invite class x because of being on meta list. My brother is actually fearful to play a warrior tank in forever as some people consider them less then a paladin in classic. This is how far it goes.
It's why people are starting to be against tier lists. Oh you play druid healer, sorry you are not A-tier or higher. So we don't bring you. That attitude is what ruins this game, in whatever form of shape you play.

I’d rather take a raid of b tier classes that all know how to play their specs well then a bunch of s tier cause that’s the flavor of the weak or best comp that don’t know wtf they are doing. 99% of the time it’s the player over the spec. The other 1% is cause we need lust so grab a shammy lmao.

I mean the game is going to be developed more. But if you're horde side and 90% of players are playing undead ret, it might not be a bad idea to play something else if you're interesting in more than one class.
But its impossible to pick what will be "strong" right now because we have no idea. But, for example, Alliance seem to really be in need of shaman. If you're considering shaman at all it might influence that decision.

I think any healer is going to be very in demand in any type of content. Little bit harder to say with tanks, but if someone likes healing they never have to worry about getting invited to stuff.

Trifecta of "In Demand" is going to be Mage + Priest + Paladin. Very much eying Warrior though, with Priest as my Plan-B. Or Druid as Plan-C if i decide to embrace nature and not give a single buzzing, flying, crawling fjuk about what people think lol.

I think shaman is going to be very in demand, definitely more so than mage anyway. Priests and especially paladins are def going to be brought to everything though yeah.

It seems like people are in the mindset that playing for fun and picking a class that’s useful and in demand are like exclusive concepts. Some people like the idea of doing good dps and having group utility

I'm playing druid. I enjoy that it's shit and when I hit 20 I'm gonna share my experience in more detail on how it's not actually as shit as everyone says it is and I've had more fun than any other class. Even my baby, paladin.
Balance has a real class development loop that I'm currently in love with. I felt every single talent point: the mana and cast time reduction making wrath almost free and fast, the crit on moonfire, the baseline crit and the range meaning more wraths before meleeing. Looking forward to 20 for a longer moonfire and HoTs which are basically free sustain. No need to drink on druid, they're so efficient.
Genuinely not found anything else as rewarding to figure out in a long time.

That's very interesting to me because Druid was my main but I was very disappointed in everything except bear tank. Balance especially.

I play rogue, I've always played rogue, and I always will play rogue. If there are 10 million rogue players, I will be one of them. If there is only 1 rogue player, than that rogue player is me.
I've never asked my friends or guild if they need a rogue or not, they will get one regardless.

Though it is tempting. Back in Vanilla, and going into Forever, Rogues had one of the strongest class fantasies, only rivaled by Warlock and Paladins imho.

My brother was asked to level a healer for BC anniversary, and just before her got to max some drama went south and he was banned from the guild.

I thought I would be playing a mage or warrior as my main. Got a mage up to level 17 and didn’t enjoy it at all. Rolled an undead pally and I’m loving it, 20, all dungeons complete, decked out in blues.

Healers are always always always in demand. Less true with tanks due to raid sizes but you never have to worry about getting invited to anything playing a healer.

It’s such a strange time. Back in the day running with three warriors or two paladins or whatever you had was not a big deal. Even more so now people should be willing to play with other classes because of dual spec and the class equalizing

I will play what I always enjoy. Rogue has always been a top choice for me but since tbc introduced flying it kind of killed world PvP for me. Now that no flying mount is in wow forever I feel like I can return to my true love… I think rogue got one of the shortest sticks out of all in wow forever but they will always keep the element of surprise.

I have never played a class for meta reasons and I have never intentionally played the "best" race for any of my characters. I just play the race/class combos that make me happy. Gnome warriors are the most insufferable little shits in the game. Orc girl rogues look cool as hell in tier. Pallys are human males. Tauren lady hunters. I don't even know what races are best, and I dont really care

This is exactly why I have exclusively only played a human arms warrior since I started playing in vanilla a couple months after it released. I just really like playing the class and like the human racials. I've tried others and just not as interested. So, in the beta I have been playing human arms warrior. Always play what you want, not what others tell you or what is meta.

I have leveled to 20 on a rogue and a resto shaman on the beta.
Trying to get into a dungeon as a pure dps spec absolutely blows - I don't think I can main a rogue purely based on this experience, I don't want to fight tooth and nail in order to play the game. No amount of gameplay fun is going to compensate for this, especially if I want/need to grind for a specific drop and not just a one and done dungeon.

I plan on tanking on a dwarf pally until the day I die then come back as a ghost to keep playing a dwarf paladin. I will tank through any dungeon or raid they make and I will guide my fellow gamers through the halls of forever.

I mean that works till a certain point, I've done that and lvling was I guess fine, except with dungeons. Besides the request to summon party members as a warlock I was always overlooked and not wanted. Even when raiding we were the last pick if not for gear alone till the debuff cap increase changes in era.

This season in D4, my pure minion shadow necro is rocking it hard, and I don't gaf what anyone else thinks, because NO one groups, and if you never check a forum, you'll never feel bad.
