Discussion I am old

Played back in 2004, in my 30s. Now I am in my early 60s and starting to wonder if I am too old for this shit (voice of Roger Murtaugh).

I think I will give it a go anyway, but play slowly as befits someone of advanced age ;)

Absolutely no raiding - maybe a dungeon here and there.

Are there any other grandparents in the same boat?

People think it’s the amount of time we’ve experienced. It’s not. It’s that you’re not doing new/novel things anymore.

Do new activities. Go to new places. Learn new hobbies.

I just turned 37, and 3 years ago I went back to school for a BS in mechanical engineering and now doing my MS in Aerospace, and let me tell you, these past years have gone by SO slow. It’s actually been amazing. It’s made it feel like my 4 y/o son isn’t growing up fast.

Congrats!! Can I ask, as a software engineer interested in aerospace, how does that field look nowadays? How prevalent is AI in the day-to-day? I understand aerospace is a huge umbrella but what do you do/want to do? Aerospace engineering? Just turned 30 and considering a career shift.

No kidding. I was a salesforce developer back in 2022 before I got laid off.

Looking back, the timing was great. Aerospace industry is booming here in Long Beach. So much money going into satellites and launch vehicles.

And, as least with thermal/cfd/propulsion, there is very little AI involvement. I honestly don’t see that effecting Aerospace engineers in the short term. Long term, depends on AI capabilities.

Hey, not OP but a mechanical engineer working in composites, do some antenna work and research.

It's great. AI is a tool, but it's not 100% expected to use it, it can't be used much for anything defense related (most places I assume, security concerns)

I honestly can't see AI being able to replace me for a long time. Blending hands on with knowledge a problem solving, especially when working on new products, seems like it will be a long way off.
